To think this is shitty parenting?

Along side our house is a public footpath, it has a small grassed area and it’s parallel to a busy main road so no one uses the grassed area as it’s not exactly the best place to picnic.
However, yesterday, when I came home (it’s was glorious weather) I could hear a baby crying. At first we couldn’t figure out where it was coming from as next door neighbours house is empty and for sale and most of our other neighbours are elderly.
Dh looked over our fence and sitting on a picnic blanket on the grassed area were three young women (never seen them in our village before and I’ve lived here for years and know most people) and a little baby of around 5/6 months old who was sitting in a carry car seat.
I’m not sure if any of the women was the mother but the girl sitting nearest to the child was smoking weed (stunk my house out!) and the smoke was going all over the baby.
Now, I have no problem with people smoking weed and know several who do but surely allowing a poor little baby to inhale that stuff is just crap parenting?!

The time to do anything about it is long gone.

Gottokondo · 05/06/2018 07:14

SS won't do mich. i knew a mum who smoked weed and drank whiskey before each breastfeed because she liked to and thought it was cool. I fucking hated her guts.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/06/2018 07:38

Social workers can and do remove children whose parents smoke weed around them. I know this as i am a SW and have done this. However it is usually linked to the parents inability to prioritise their children over their weed smoking. So dirty house, no money for food, children left unsupervised in a potentially dangerous environment, parent sleep all day and not undertaking basic care of the children, random people in and out of the house all day and night etc.

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/06/2018 07:58

I don't have a problem with people smoking a bit of weed either. But smoking it around a baby, much like smoking anything around a baby, isn't right. I doubt you'll find anyone who disagrees op.

ParellelReality · 05/06/2018 08:16

Apollo - and for all the parents whose weed use doesn't result in neglect or abuse, SS aren't going to intervene much are they?

Herbalteahippie · 05/06/2018 08:17

Smoking of any kind, near a baby is revolting.

Strugglingtodomybest · 05/06/2018 08:20

Yes it was pretty shirty, but at least they were outdoors. I'm not sure what the point of this thread is either.

TeasndToast · 05/06/2018 09:41

Apollo you are clearly not a social worker. Social workers do not have the power to remove children from their parents care. Children’s services keep children with drug addicted parents all the time. If we took all the children into care who had parents who took drugs, the system would collapse.
For context, a mother on heroin who went on Methadone, living with a partner who was not addicted would be able to keep their child with support.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/06/2018 16:13

@TeasandToast I can't actually work out if you are being serious or not. I am most certainly a social worker. Social workers do have the power to remove children via the court. I have done it many times. Yes SS do leave children with drug addicted parents if they are receiving support and ensuring the care and safety of their children. By equal measure children are removed where drug addicted parents cannot care for their children. I gave the context for those occasions where intervention to remove a child might be required.

@TeasndToast where is your excellent social worker knowledge gained from?

CrochetBelle · 05/06/2018 21:20

Wow, you just reminded me a friend brought me over two joints at the weekend.

Wah-hey.

Clubcuts · 05/06/2018 22:22

@CrochetBelle, that's fantastic! Go smoke them over your babies cot! That would be awesome!!

TeasndToast · 06/06/2018 07:19

10 years working in children’s services clubcuts.

Enjoy your joint.

TeasndToast · 06/06/2018 07:24

Sorry, club, last comment not meant for you. I shouldn’t post when sleep deprived.

I knew someone who lost a baby to SIDS after having smoked weed heavily throughout the pregnancy and breastfeeding/around the baby. She then went and did exactly the same thing with her second pregnancy which I found mind-boggling given that there’s evidence to show the two things are related.
