Camping Ettiquette

I’m camping this weekend, two tents, two children, two dogs.

This is the first time we’ve each brought our dogs and searched for a long time and through lots of reviews until we found this place... spoke to the owner who said he only takes a certain amount of bookings to make sure you’re all a bit seperate and no one bothers anyone else.

Last night it was amazing... it’s almost like you’re camping totally alone. I can see a group of tents in the distance and the top of another through the trees but it does feel very secluded.

When we arrived the owner was at the gate and told us to drive and find an empty space. I assume he says this to everyone..

Today a new family arrive, and park and pitch up right next to us. And I mean Right next to us. Some of their ropes even cross over with my friends tent. Their table and chairs are right in the siteline of ours, I can even hear their drink open!

To make it worse, their kids seem terrified of dogs. Our dogs aren’t on leads and have been running around ‘our camp’ really happy. Now we’ve had to get the crate out.

AIBU? I’m kind of pissed off. I wish I’d brought hungry hippos or some really loud scream inducing game but unfortunately playing cards and magiclip dolls are all I have..!

They sound horrible. Maybe you could get your dog to poo in front of the entrance to their tent Wink.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/06/2018 21:13

Are you heavy sleepers? Get some YouTube sounds of people snoring and play them loudly.

Amuseme · 02/06/2018 21:16

Shall I park my car ‘near’ to theirs whilst letting the dog out and where would you like me to hang the wind chimes? X

bitmynailbrokemytooth · 02/06/2018 21:16

Isn't this weird ? It's like when you sit down in an empty cinema and someone plonks himself/herself down right next to you. Happens in car parks too.

I love and have become obsessed with the phrase from a PP " Uncrate your dogs ". Brilliant.

PurdysChocolate · 02/06/2018 21:19

This thread is making me feel stressed, this would totally ruin my holiday! I'm glad you are able to take it on the chin OP and are still having a nice time.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 02/06/2018 21:19

The wood guy still hasn’t been... and we need some!

DH also put the red wine in the cool box so two crimes have been committed here Hmm

Why do people do this? I swear to God this kind of thing stopped me wanting to holiday in the UK. Because every beautiful virtually empty beach we visited, some 'lonely' family would rock up and park their entire family and associated paraphernalia within inches of us. These people have no concept of personal space and should be called out on it every single time.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 02/06/2018 21:21

Strike through fail Smile

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/06/2018 21:23

Red wine in the cool box. Shock. Major crime.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 02/06/2018 21:24

GeekyWombat you should try camping... it’s amazing. This is annoying, sure, but we’ve still had a fab time. Last summer my DD’s went to Paris, Copenhagen, California and Camping... and they said camping was their favourite. I think it almost won for me too! (Can’t beat California sunshine over the Jurassic Park ride Grin)

You should definitely give it a go. We borrowed all the stuff the first time to make sure we liked it. And if you do get all the stuff, if you can’t get away anywhere else, you can always have a holiday for next to nothing.. Smile

Ltb.

TattyFrench · 02/06/2018 21:25

Cheeky bastards! I'd wait until they're asleep and pull up their guy ropes. I'd definitely tell wood man about the woman and beer can. They do sound quite aggressive, maybe that's their thing? Just being as awkward and arsey as possible.

I'm in Sussex, two children who can make noise in command and an annoying (but very lovely dog).

NettleTea I'd love to know where your camp site is, do you allow dogs/fires?

CantankerousCamel · 02/06/2018 21:29

Loud sex noises tonight OP

I have the same tent as you but we need an awning. We do have tonnes of pretty bunting for it though

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 02/06/2018 21:30

I forgot the bunting... I only realised as we turned into the campsite so it was a bit late to go back 😂

You have fairy lights, that’s the main thing

Stompythedinosaur · 02/06/2018 21:31

I definitely need an update.

I would actually approach this with the owner from a complaint about them throwing their rubbish (drinks can) into your camp. As a committed camper I am appalled by that!

I wouldn't pen the dogs and I would ask the parents to remove their child every time they came into your camp.

Hope you have a good evening!

Ellendegeneres · 02/06/2018 21:32

You need wood

CantankerousCamel · 02/06/2018 21:33

I would also speak to the owner

But I would have had it out with them before they camped up tbh

Jux · 02/06/2018 21:33

Have camped every year sibce I was a baby until about 5 years ago - that's 55 years of camping.

I have never seen tents pitched so close that their ropes cross except when they're in a group.

I suspect your CFs are inept. If you'd pointed out how close they were and asked them give you privacy when they started and then asked the site owner to have a word back then, then I think they'd have gone to the other side of the field. Too late now, but stay vigilant next year!

Let the dogs and children enjoy their holiday though. If they don't like the dogs out, let them out earlier and keep them out later. Put the stick when you tether them on their side.

Don't let them walk through your area though. That's just rude, so complain.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 02/06/2018 21:34

They’re totally not the people to argue with... after conexisting with them all day I’m super glad I didn’t confront them.

CantankerousCamel · 02/06/2018 21:37

You should look out for the rag rug half moon you can get for the tent

Oh and a piece of circular wood in the middle under the main pole is really good for a table

Lilymossflower · 02/06/2018 21:38

Omg don't crate the dogs, let them annoy them so they move !

ICantCopeAnymore · 02/06/2018 21:43

Best thread for ages Grin
