A 12 year old boy stuck his hands through the bars and when a meerkat bit him, he killed her. The meerkat was pregnant at the time.

Why has his parents not taught him to keep their hands out of enclosures? Or not killing?

Where was his parents when he decided to do that?

I don't agree with him receiving death threats as some people are saying but I bloody hope he gets a good bollocking

This isn't a very pleasant story, but I think people are going way over the top in their reaction to what the twelve year old did. He slammed the meerkat to the ground, presumably to get her off him. It's a wild animal at the end of the day, so I suspect it had bitten him quite badly. I think YABU, given you seem to be suggesting he killed it for fun.

Yes he was stupid to put his hand through the bars, but instinct when something is biting you isn't the same as murder

So it sounds pretty deliberate. Horrible, uneducated child needing much better adult supervision and a close eye since childhood brutality to animals is a bit of a red flag

It sounds like he did pick her up afterwards not just to get rid of her. The amount of force required to kill her by slamming her to the ground doesn't make it sound like he was trying to shake her off

I was reduced to actual tears of rage by the story about the girl in wichita who tortured a terrified little kitten to death whilst her friend filmed it. Apparently local kids know who they are and won't make their lives fun - it's very very hard not to say, "fucking good."

Also, 12 is old enough to know the consequences of picking her up and smashing her to the ground. A younger child doesn't necessarily know that they could kill an animal that way. A 12 year old does.

Wherever it happened, the meerkats shouldn't have been accessible to the public, very careless of the zoo. Young boys will always do things they're not supposed to.
