A 12 year old boy stuck his hands through the bars and when a meerkat bit him, he killed her. The meerkat was pregnant at the time.

Why has his parents not taught him to keep their hands out of enclosures? Or not killing?

Where was his parents when he decided to do that?

I don't agree with him receiving death threats as some people are saying but I bloody hope he gets a good bollocking

This is disgraceful.

It has been said he did it when the animal bit him. Yes he shouldn't have his hand in the enclosure. But he reacted to protect himself which was to shake to try get the animal off and consequently and sadly the meerkats died.

However what is worse is pathetic adults saying they wished the kid was dead or hope he gets beaten up. If you run over an animal going 1mph over the speed limit and therefore breaking the rules is it ok for me to give you death threats and hope someone finds you and beats you up? NO. So don't say that to a kid because you seem a lot worse than him and I suggest you get checked tbh because you're a danger to society if you think that's rational thiught.

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 21:09

Aw come on this boy didn't mean to kill the animal. He was probably showing off in front of his friends something perhaps he would not have done with his parent? You cantjust assume it's bad parenting.

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 21:12

I totally agree, your point about killing an animal on the road is spot on. None of these people would expect to be abused for that as it would be an accident.

Notthemessiah · 21/05/2018 21:23

Ironic that on Mumsnet we get so many who either obviously hate children, or at least put them so far below animals in the pecking order of their priorities.

Nowhere in the two articles (the one linked here to the independent and the one on the BBC that people are also referring to) does it say anything other than he killed it shaking it off. There is NOTHING to suggest he reached back in and killed it after he had already thrown it off - either some posters here are too lazy to read the articles themselves or are just happy to make shit up to stoke outrage (against a 12 year old boy). I sincerely hope you do not have kids of your own.

Tiredmum100 · 21/05/2018 21:35

He was 12!! Why was he putting his hand in there. Stupid boy. My 4 year old would know not to do it.

Usernameunknown2 · 21/05/2018 23:41

Horrible that the Meercat died. The boy should never have put his hands in there and he should take full responsibility for his bite and the meercats death, even if its accidental. If i was the school he would be on no more trips as he cant be trusted at all. His father should be apologising on behalf of his son not blaming others.

Given the father's blaming and the boys actions you can clearly see the entitled attitude passing down generations.

The people death threatening should be ashamed of themselves.

Birdsgottafly · 22/05/2018 01:21

I partly agree with the Dad, not because the boy isn't responsible for his actions, though.

The Meerkat was pregnant and had youngsters in the Family group. People shouldn't be able to put their hands in and stress her out. She shouldn't have to fight a Human to defend her Family, they shouldn't be able to reach her.

Every dog owner that I know, keeps their dog on a lead when pregnant, because you don't know how they will react to things.

I watched Monkey life and there were deaths that were avoidable, if a bit more thought had have been given to how the animals were kept.

Young Teen lads are impulsive and unpredictable at times. the Teachers have been criticised, also. He wasn't being adequately supervised.

It's only been one person who claimed the boy deliberately killed her. That isn't enough proof to condemn him.

1forAll74 · 22/05/2018 02:03

What do you say? Just a horrible child who can't read a zoo warning notice, or disregards it, has not been taught about animal behaviour.
Everyone loves Meercats, the child is just a meerbrat.

Kursk · 22/05/2018 02:27

Animals should be kept away from the public because they are not safe,

Yes, the public are not safe.

I don’t think the kid is a psychopath, he reacted to a situation. Killing happens for 3 reasons only:
Reaction- such as this
Necessity- hunt for food
Fun- minority of nut jobs

For instance DS (14) is very mentally stable but he shot a deer during Hunting season to provide meat for the family.

In my local paper, there is a story atleast once a week of an animal being tortured in some way. The horse attacked with acid, puppy tied up and dumped on the motorway, a kitten bound and taped up.

These are more extreme than this story but still distressing nonetheless.

It’s so difficult to hear about , I really wish there were more things that could be done for animal welfare, both domestic and commercial. I think animal charities should have more power than they do.

Charolais · 22/05/2018 03:41

Young boys will always do things they're not supposed to

Are you the little shits mother?

Charolais · 22/05/2018 03:44

Kursk We don’t need to eat meat, but maybe a mother cougar or a bear will snatch your kid to provide nourishment for her family one day - after all they have to eat meat.

Birdsgottafly · 22/05/2018 03:57

No I'm not his Mother, but I was stating a fact. We don't try children in Court, as though they are Adults, because that goes against their biology. if we are going to give respect for an animals natural instinct, then it should be extended to all animals, Human's included.

The Zoo had a duty of Care towards the Meerkats and got it badly wrong.

^Perhaps the threats will be carried out, It wouldn't sadden me as much as the killing of a sentient creature in such an evil way*

Everyone knows 12 year old boys aren't sentient.
😂

TheOriginalEmu · 22/05/2018 06:18

Not all 12 year olds can read.
Not all 12 year olds know better.
I was bitten by a guinea pig where I was hanging off my finger and I instinctively flung it off, without thinking. It was a much loved pet, but the whole point of instinct is that you aren’t in control.

crunchymint · 22/05/2018 09:35

Guinea pigs do not bite unless you have really really frightened it.

I've also never known a guinea pig bite anyone, I've had quite a few myself from childhood.

Was bitten by the hamster though, and managed not to whip my hand around to get it off, neither did my 7 year old nephew (drew blood too).

crunchymint · 22/05/2018 10:15

And guinea pigs do not hang off your finger either.

Kursk · 22/05/2018 10:41

Humans are not at the top of the food chain

NutElla5x · 22/05/2018 10:55
