I've never washed a grape

And DH suddenly thinks its a major issue. Made a huge deal out of washing every single grape this evening. What??? Told me people recently got a bit poorly after not washing Spanish tomatoes. DCs are 5 and 9 and have eaten thousands of unwashed grapes between them. He's actually in a strop right now about my attitude towards grape cleanliness. Who is right?

I expect we are in the minority here but I never wash fruit! Most people just run it under water anyway and it's obvious that's not actually going to do anything.

I've survived and thrived on unwashed fruit Grin

CaptainHammer · 17/05/2018 21:57

The only time I wash grapes before eating is if they’ve got that weird dusty texture

Grobagsforever · 17/05/2018 21:57

I never wash fruit or vege, We also never wash our hands before eating.

We're the healthiest family anyone knows. Never, ever sick.

picklemepopcorn · 17/05/2018 21:58

Same here.

00100001 · 17/05/2018 21:58

How is a ghost on the internet?

CaptainHammer · 17/05/2018 21:58

california there was a thread recently about washing fruit and from what I remember the majority of posters didn’t bother washing fruit

PollyMycroft · 17/05/2018 21:58

Me neither. I do have a 'relaxed' attitude to food washing and use by dates though...I'm only careful when preparing chicken.

picklemepopcorn · 17/05/2018 21:58

Don't peel or wash potatoes or carrots, unless there is visible mud.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/05/2018 21:59

I never wash fruit or veg, and I had no idea you were supposed to cut grapes until Dd was well over the cutting age.

CaliforniaDream · 17/05/2018 21:59

@CaptainHammer ahh, that's good to know!

topcat2014 · 17/05/2018 21:59

Never wash fruit, rarely wash veg that is being cooked.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 17/05/2018 22:00

I didn't wash grapes until recently, when someone said they needed the plastic taste washing off them Confused

I only do it now if the plastic-taster is in sight. She doesn't appear to notice the difference when I don't wash them...

iamyourequal · 17/05/2018 22:00

I always wash grapes, thoroughly under running water. I think they taste rather dusty otherwise. I don’t always remember to wash apples though....

thetriangleisarealinstrument · 17/05/2018 22:00

I wash them now im pregnant but never did before. I think you are technically supposed to because theres a slim chance you could get ill.... I personally would not worry too much about it unless you have bad health or are pregnant.

tastylancs · 17/05/2018 22:01

I'm smiling in relief that I'm not the only fruit slattern here. I mean, I think I can trust Booths to at least give them a good rinse.

It's to wash some pesticides off! Grapes especially can taste pretty crap before washing

TheMonkeysAreMine · 17/05/2018 22:03

I don't wash fruit however.....we have a septic tank and a farmer empties it for free

Idk what he grows or what he does with it....just saying

LoniceraJaponica · 17/05/2018 22:03

I always wash fruit and veg. I have IBS and it doesn't take much to upset my stomach. Why increase the risk?

Also it reduces the amount of pesticides on the surface of the fruit/veg. It doesn't remove them entirely, but up to about 80%.

Like not ironing I don't regard not washing fruit or veg as a badge of honour to be proud of.

FrancesHaHa · 17/05/2018 22:04

I worked in a vineyard for awhile. The grapes were sprayed with chemicals there, which were pretty grim. If you didn't wear gloves and had a small cut you'd be in a lot of pain.

That said, I'm not sure running them under the tap washes anything off.

I don't eat grapes generally- eating them makes me asthmatic (again, pretty sure it's the chemicals)

Ohyesiam · 17/05/2018 22:06

I’m not worried about dirt, but o like to wash off all the shit that’s sprayed on fruit. Grapes are sprayed more than any other fruit apparently insecticides and fungicides mostly.

Hopskipjumping · 17/05/2018 22:07

I wash all fruit. Only the one time though, so when I buy them I put them in a colander then put them back into the packaging. Not sure if its pointless, I was told if you don't you risk threadworms as their eggs can live on fruit. Not sure how true it is but I do notice how much dirt can come off some fruit.

Dontblameitontheboogie · 17/05/2018 22:10

Yep, washing fruit is to rinse off as much of the various chemicals as possible. I get very upset if DCs try to eat grapes without washing them first! The pesticides and other chemicals accumulate in the central nervous system, potentially causing things like early onset Alzheimer's in 40-50 years' time. Not to mention a variety of cancers.

RavenLG · 17/05/2018 22:10

I never wash fruit or vege, We also never wash our hands before eating
Same
Don't peel or wash potatoes or carrots, unless there is visible mud
Sometimes when mushrooms have odd little flakes of mud I don't even wash them. We're still alive, shock horror!

Deedee248 · 17/05/2018 22:10

I have been brought up that you should always wash fruit before eating, and would hate to eat any that hasn’t been washed.

Just did a quick google and found this.

NewYearNewMe18 · 17/05/2018 22:10

I don't either, but them a cousin spent a summer picking raspberries and it was common practice to piss in the fields …. still don't wash them
