I've never washed a grape

And DH suddenly thinks its a major issue. Made a huge deal out of washing every single grape this evening. What??? Told me people recently got a bit poorly after not washing Spanish tomatoes. DCs are 5 and 9 and have eaten thousands of unwashed grapes between them. He's actually in a strop right now about my attitude towards grape cleanliness. Who is right?

Not RTFT but why on earth would you wash grapes?!

For me, the herbicides and pesticides that are used to grow/store them.

I’ve worked as a fruit picker and I’ve worked in supermarkets. I wash everything.

Only on MN Grin

Everyone I know in RL washes hands and fruit/ veg before eating. Basic hygiene really.

LoniceraJaponica · 20/05/2018 08:53

I agree Itchy MN has the opposite extremes of really fastidious posters who won't allow anyone esle to use their loo and those who deem it a badge of honour to be as skanky as possible.

The advice on here and here is just common sense.

All the "it didn't do me any harm" posts are just anecdotal.

I wash them. Peoples hand have picked them and bugs have walked on them. Who knows where either have been!

boopsy washing does make a difference. Even a quick rinse under the tap removes most of them, especially if you use mechanical action ie rubbing the surfaces. Even better is using salt water or water with baking soda dissolved in it. I don't do that, just rinse under the tap while rubbing the surfaces.

DW insists that broccoli must be washed before use. The explanation as to what splashing it under the cold tap does that boiling it doesn't remains elusive, though.

Unless you buy certified organic you should always wash fruit - especially when given in large amounts to children. The amount of pesticides and chemicals on the surface of the fruit Is horrible
