To think Yeovil can't be that bad?

We are looking at buying a house in Yeovil and when we try and research on the internet it seems people would rather pull their own nails out than live there....it can't be that bad can it? Looking at crime rate maps only tells part of the story and obviously we wouldn't buy in high crime areas.
OH having lived in Enfield ( not the wealthy part) for a good few years and I lived for 20 years in a high crime area in social housing ( 5 murders/ suspicious deaths) in 20 years within a mile of my house we are used to the more challenging side of life.

It's very hard to move nearly 4hrs drive away without knowing the area, we can't afford to rent in the area first either. Are we being unreasonable to just go with the flow and move ignoring the people who says it's awful and it's the worst place to live in the West Country ?

nothing wrong with Henstridge. that house might be good as it's not standard construction and may put off those seeking a mortgage so might be perfect in this instance.

I went out for dinner in town last night and walked down the high street at 10.30pm feeling totally safe having had a lovely meal. There are the usual stereotypes and people living over on the eastern side of town have issues so stay to the west. It's a great base that's affordable with so many parks/walks and weekend activities nearby.

Thank you all for the brilliant information, we went and saw 5 properties last weekend and going to see 2 more this weekend.
For those saying how terrible and dangerous it is in Yeovil can I suggest that Enfield and the surrounding parts of North London where OH lives until very recently are actual not as bad as the news would have you believe but also the very very high levels of knife crime, drugs and ASB make it quite unappealing to live in and make the relative lower crime in Yeovil and the prices more appealing. The reason we want to be in this area of the world is to do with specific work requirements and job offers.

We are not looking for a forever home, it's somewhere for us for the next 7/8 years where we can have a home of our own together until we can afford to move again into a more permanent home.

Ps that non standard house was on the short list but we found others we want to view 😍

Sounds exciting! Good luck and enjoy Somerset Smile.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 24/05/2018 19:20

Compared to big cities and towns up and down the country, Somerset really doesn't have crime rates. Most people that I know that work in Yeovil, live in smaller towns like Ilminster or even Chard ( yeah it is well known for it's roughness but it is unwarranted - was rough in 70s and 80s )

Your update sounds promising OP, all the best in finding a property down here!
