To think Yeovil can't be that bad?

MissCherryCakeyBun · 16/05/2018 21:56

We are looking at buying a house in Yeovil and when we try and research on the internet it seems people would rather pull their own nails out than live there....it can't be that bad can it? Looking at crime rate maps only tells part of the story and obviously we wouldn't buy in high crime areas.
OH having lived in Enfield ( not the wealthy part) for a good few years and I lived for 20 years in a high crime area in social housing ( 5 murders/ suspicious deaths) in 20 years within a mile of my house we are used to the more challenging side of life.

It's very hard to move nearly 4hrs drive away without knowing the area, we can't afford to rent in the area first either. Are we being unreasonable to just go with the flow and move ignoring the people who says it's awful and it's the worst place to live in the West Country ?

urgh. people who havent lived in yeovil always have something odd to say. its fine honestly.
just note everyone saying its fine, who seems to actually have lived there. not amazing or brilliant or a dream location. but nice and good and fine. it's a solid place to live. good luck house hunting. (check on the new brympton estate would be my tip. or abbey manor.)

Sunnymeg · 18/05/2018 21:43

I have friends who live in Bridgwater. House prices are artificially high currently, due to the demand from workers, building Hinkley Point C.

Tinkerbell89 · 18/05/2018 21:44

What about Somerton or Langport or slightly further away Street.

Ninchninch · 18/05/2018 21:47

Hi, I grew up in South Petherton. I have family who live in Yeovil.
It's just very 'meh'
It is surrounded by beautiful countryside though. But the town it's self just isn't great.
The hospital is good.

Ninchninch · 18/05/2018 21:50

P.s my Mum still lives in South Petherton and often goes to Yeovil for shopping and the odd night out. But she is also not a fan of the place.

SimonBridges · 18/05/2018 22:59

It always makes me laugh on threads like this where people post and say ‘I went to x town once 20 years ago and it was a shithole, therefore it must still be a shit hole.’

EnormousDormouse · 19/05/2018 06:15

I live there. It's a shithole.

Atalune · 19/05/2018 07:48

I live in the area and have worked in Yeovil for 10 years. I do feel like I know what I’m talking about.

Langport- yes there is an abattoir, outside of the town and there are no artics permitted through the village centre Confused.

Yeovil is ok. There are many nicer places though.

MegEmski · 19/05/2018 07:51

I work in Yeovil and obviously have lots of friends that live in Yeovil

It's fine. It's horrendously ugly in some parts.
But it's got everything you need, hospital is good. Reasonable range of shops. Surrounded by gorgeous countryside you don't have to go far to be in a beautiful area. NHS dentists with space!

Some nice restaurants too.

I've been on various nights out and never felt unsafe at any point. Or heard of issues or hassle from my friends who live in Yeovil.

Jessica78 · 19/05/2018 08:13

Frome is just brilliant, I used to live there and I miss it!

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 19/05/2018 08:36

It really isn't that bad.

Sadly, if you currently drive into Yeovil down the A30 from the East you could be forgiven for thinking it was Beirut. So many semi-demolished abandoned sites. It really needs some investment.

The people who sorted out Reading need to come and do Yeovil.

hammeringinmyhead · 19/05/2018 08:41

Yes, and there is not a single house in Frome on sale for £150k. My workmate has just paid £250k for a tiny 2 bed.

I live in Trowbridge and it's in the middle of regeneration. You could just about get a 2-bed for £150k if you offered under the asking price.

Grandmaswagsbag · 19/05/2018 08:46

Stop suggesting Frome and Bruton people!! They have 150K. It might get you a studio flat in those places.

malificent7 · 19/05/2018 08:50

I second From...gorgeous and very up and coming.

malificent7 · 19/05/2018 08:50

From sorry

malificent7 · 19/05/2018 08:50

Agggrrr ...give up!

hammeringinmyhead · 19/05/2018 08:59

Again. If the OP has enough stuff to need a house, this is the one and only house in her budget in Frome and it's a shed.

Partyfops · 19/05/2018 09:00

It's very much Jeremy Kyle fodder area around there. Especially unless you can afford to live in the naice areas.

How about moving East, Ely, Newmarket or Bury St Edmunds way. Much much nicer.

Atalune · 19/05/2018 09:01

frome and bruton are so chi chi now that I would be so surprised if £150k gets you much of anything.

Scabbersley · 19/05/2018 09:03

Why the fuck are people banging on about Bruton and frome? They are totally londinised and expensive

Nousernameforme · 19/05/2018 09:03

I'm in weston and would add in to avoid the coronation as well as the oldmixon and bournville.

The rule of thumb is the higher up the hill the better.

This is quite nice a sea view (if tides in and you stretch a bit) Close to the woods as well which hall an iron age hill fort in it.

This would get you a garden close to train station but nicer end of sea front more old people homes less rehab
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-68132720.html

It's got some nice restaurants and we have the new dolphin square complex 25 mins from bristol on a train. You do have to change at bristol to get anywhere though.

Scabbersley · 19/05/2018 09:04

Jeremy Kyle fodder? Nice and Ely isn't?!

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 19/05/2018 09:19

Alternatively, forget London and go and live in Lyme.

Views to die for.

LadyFlumpalot · 19/05/2018 09:35

There is this for £150k in Henstridge which is on the A30 to Yeovil. Near to Templecombe and the mainline station.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 19/05/2018 09:45

I like that house LadyFlumpalot.
