Gas or electric

Not really an AIBU but i need a new cooker and have always used gas. My mum is saying electric cookers are much easier to clean, and I do hate cooker cleaning! Is she right?

I have an electric cooker for the first time in my life because we’re renting while we’re in the US.

I hate it.

It’s bloody well not easier to clean. Controlling the temp is much more difficult and things are always boiling over before I can get to them.

Gas all the way.

choccybiscuit · 10/05/2018 19:49

Gas hob. Electric oven.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/05/2018 19:51

Yes electric are easier to keep clean but cooking gas is far better

I have gas hob (easier to control heat stir fry on electric job just doesn’t work) and electric oven with rubbish electric grill (takes forever to make cheese on toast and just not the same)

I shall next time go for gas hob and oven and just keep on top of cleaning it Wink

Merryoldgoat · 10/05/2018 19:53

I’d never cook on an electric hob. Gas all the way.

CaveMaman · 10/05/2018 19:53

Gas hob and electric oven. I have a gas oven and it's awful. Takes forever to reach temperature. I've always been taught to believe that a "bad workman blames his tools" but honestly, I used to be quite good at baking... not anymore! It's definitely the oven.

NannyR · 10/05/2018 19:54

Go for an electric oven and an induction (rather than electric ceramic or halogen) hob, induction is just as responsive as gas and so much easier to clean.

Oldraver · 10/05/2018 19:56

We've just swapped to an induction hob and it is amazing..really easy to clean and things dont burn on like with gas as there is no actual 'heat' form an element/gas ring.

Just give it a quick wipe at the end

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/05/2018 19:58

Electric is easier to clean but a nightmare to cook on in my opinion. I have gas hob and electric ovens.

I’ve cooked on induction and liked that so might get induction next time around.

Queencity · 10/05/2018 19:59

Gas hob, electric oven.

loubielou31 · 10/05/2018 20:15

Induction hob! Bloody fantastic, as responsive as gas, a doddle to clean.

Shiftymake · 10/05/2018 20:18

Induction is amazing, really like it.

IsItThatTimeAlready131 · 10/05/2018 20:41

Used to use gas when young, preferred it to electric, but when got married had no gas in the kitchen. Changed to induction and absolutely loved it. Different house now and need to save up for a standalone induction cooker so am using ceramic hob, still trying to get used to it properly, I loved the induction hob (went through 3).

If I get to have the choice between gas and induction again I would definitely choose induction - easy to use, easy to clean, turns off automatically if left on without a pan and most pans are suitable for them now.

Storm4star · 10/05/2018 22:23

Thanks everyone, will definitely take a look at induction.

Dual fuel electric oven and gas hob is best imo.

I grew up with gas and was used to the limitations of a gas oven - uneven cooking, not reliable.

When I was limited to electric I discovered how very much better an electric fan oven is, but cooking on an electric hob is awful. Induction isn't much better - theoretically it's more responsive but if you have the kind with touch sensitive controls and they aren't responding to your touch because the peas over boiled and the surface is damp and you have to clean up before it responds to the touch and reduces the heat.

Cooking on a gas hob is lovely.

Cleaning a smooth glass plate hob -electric ceramic or induction - is certainly easier but what the point of a nice clean hob that isn't a joy to cook on?

BakedBeans47 · 10/05/2018 22:51

Depends what kind of electric. We changed from gas to induction and it’s brilliant. Every bit as controllable as gas, fast, and a dream to clean. I wouldn’t have got a non induction electric hob though.

MiddleClassProblem · 10/05/2018 22:52

If I could afford induction I would have it but second best is gas. Never would I have electric.

Meandyouandyouandme · 10/05/2018 22:55

Induction job and electric self cleaning oven, it’s like magic. Mine are both Bosch, very easy to cook on and clean.

Meandyouandyouandme · 10/05/2018 22:55

*hob

Onlyoldontheoutside · 10/05/2018 22:56

Induction all the way.I am using a gas hob after years of an induction one and it is driving me mad as I cannot get it low enough to really slow cook things without a diffuser mat.
When the kitchen is done I'm getting on other induction.
We originally got one because when I had DD it was the best option safety wise as it's the pans that heat up and the glass not has transferred heat from them and if the pan is removed they turn off so less chance of a child burning themselves.

FASH84 · 10/05/2018 23:00

Gas hob electric fan assisted oven. I've tried other combinations but come back to this one. Gas is more controllable for a hob, I also live that we can have a wok burner with gas. I find gas ovens are more likely to have hot spots, and especially baking is more consistent with fan assisted electric

imonaplane · 10/05/2018 23:00

I love my Neff induction hob. It is just as responsive as gas and so easy to clean. Even if something does boil over it doesn't burn on as the hob doesn't get hot enough. Looks lovely too. I would never go back to a gas hob.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 10/05/2018 23:07

Our gas hob isn't hard to clean at all, it's brushed steel and flat - we just prop the black pot stand bits back up against the wall and give it a quick wipe every night. The black bits don't seem to get much on them, but anything obvious gets wiped off night too. Gas is so responsive and you can use any pans. Electric oven all the way though.

DramaAlpaca · 10/05/2018 23:10

I have a gas hob & an electric fan oven. I've heard a lot of good things about induction recently, but I'm not sure if I'd want to change.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/05/2018 23:19

Induction hob and electric oven.

We installed an induction hob 4 years ago and I love it. Never needs cleaning and is better than gas.

MiddleClassProblem · 10/05/2018 23:43

Oh yes when I said never electric I just meant hob. Electric fan all the way.

Although don’t get a Smeg.
