When will it be safe to watch Coronation Street again?

I nearly gave up on it during and after the Phelan nonsense but was drawn back in.

After Jenny grabbing her coat to take Johnny to see something and all the news of Aiden ive decided to stop watching it temporarily.

Lately ive had enough drama in my own life. I want the light hearted Corrie back.

Do i have to wait a week or two to get these stories out of the way? Anyone know?

Watch Classic instead

ITV3 14:40(ish) for two 1980s episodes back to back, repeated next day at 06:30.

Mavis and Derek have just married

ferriswheel · 09/05/2018 22:09

Omg. What an amazing idea. Perfect. Thanks.

I know what you mean. All the Phelan stuff and how they’re (still) dragging it out. And then the David storyline. Anna in prison. It’s starting to be more like East Enders.

pickingdaisies · 09/05/2018 22:32

I'm only watching out of loyalty, but I think I'm going to stop now. Seeing the classic episodes only shows how far it's fallen - and it's still not not safe, all that Eva and Aiden. And David. Sad

NC4Now · 09/05/2018 22:34

I've given up too. I used to watch it with DS2 (age 11) but I'm finding it increasingly uncomfortable.
I see the value in using soaps to tackle difficult issues, and Corrie's always done that (Roy and Hayley were great for it) but it's just a bit much now. It's too much, too close together, with not enough respite in between.

Gemini69 · 09/05/2018 22:35

Love Phelan... Love Aiden... of all characters that they could have gotten rid of... they chose these two belter characters....

gutted Sad

EdithWeston · 09/05/2018 22:37

I still read the MN threads about the 2018 Corrie, but don't watch it any more. They do care more about Twitter response than longstanding viewers, so are going for short term and sensational to feed that audience. It's deliberate, and there's no sign of it ending.

I watch real Corrie most mornings, whilst humanising myself over coffee, before before pitchforking DC out of bed.

Timefortea99 · 09/05/2018 22:38

I stopped when Phelan shot the guy he was holding captive. Not only was it a grotesque storyline, it was boring too. Stopped watching Enders years ago due to the unrelenting grimness but used to love Corrie for the humour. That has now gone to the bad and is depressing so no point in watching it. I don’t miss it and won’t return. They have lost me for good. I don’t watch any soaps now. It’s freeing.

mancmummy1414 · 09/05/2018 22:38

Oh ffs. All these moaners, if you want a comedy, watch a comedy.
Tonight’s episode was harrowing but so important - suicide is the bigger killer of men under 45 and it was beautifully done, the way it ties in with David’s storyline but ended on him speaking out rather than going the same way portrayed a very strong message.
This episode will undoubtedly have helped people struggling through mental health issues and social thoughts - if it helped even one person then it’s a job well done.
So if you don’t like it, I’m sure you know how to work your TV remote.

mancmummy1414 · 09/05/2018 22:38

*suicidal thoughts

aaww lovely kind Andy .. yes you are correct... the writers got that very wrong... I haven't enjoyed the writing in recent times.... Andy should have lived Flowers

ToadOfSadness · 09/05/2018 22:52

The storylines are dragged on for far too long these days. And I wish they would get rid of Bethany Platt, and her simpering and whingeing and get someone that can act.

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 09/05/2018 23:03

Well I for one am still emotional ( as is DP). Recorded Mondays and watched them back to back. Agree with mancmummy. Very well done. Highlighting two taboo subjects - male suicide and male rape. Again I hope it helps people reach out and if in doing so it saves lives then that's brilliant

Goldmonday · 09/05/2018 23:03

I just really wish that they would someone a happy ending for once!!!

ToadOfSadness · 09/05/2018 23:26

I just really wish that they would someone a happy ending for once!!!

Carla got her kidney - but you just know that something else will go wrong for her because it always does. Interesting that she recovered so fast and is living it up with no sign of the weight gain often seen in transplant patients due to the meds.

Toyah has her baby at last - and now we can all wait for something to go wrong for her and Eva.

Happy endings are never actual endings in Coronation St. they are just a pre-cursor to more misery. I remember many years ago, my father said to my mother 'I don't know why you want to watch that, it's so bloomin' miserable' and it has got worse over the years. (I think it was in black & white at the time).

cindersrella · 09/05/2018 23:54

I haven't watched any soaps for along time! The violence and the abuse in them are far to close to home for me.

They cause massive distress and flash back, nightmares etc!

I can't even imagine how people must watch it with there children still up!

imweirdandcool · 10/05/2018 00:19

Tbh i stopped watching after micheal keegan left

imweirdandcool · 10/05/2018 00:19

Redglitter · 10/05/2018 00:26

I think Aidens story was very well.done. He didn't come across as suicidal at all, which is of course the whole point. Social Media tonight has lots of posts about the subject and people saying they hope friends will reach out if they're in a bad place. The suicide rate in men is awful and I think they handled the story very well. Particularly showing the devastation as people heard the news. I liked the bit they did with Gails voiceover.

I think Corrie has been very guilty of over the top ridiculous stories recently but not this time. It was so well handled

iheartmichellemallon · 10/05/2018 00:32

Completely agree Redglitter - I've hated all the recent stuff & especially the Phelan storyline, but the Aiden storyline was so well done & heart wrenching & David telling his truth to Shona at the end & talking about wanting to live was superbly well done.

MrsDilber · 10/05/2018 00:59

They dragged the Callum stuff on for years (I'm still not convinced he's dead) and now Phelan has come back from the dead. Maybe they'll partner them both up???

I stopped watching about a year ago my my friends give me an update every now and then.

It is dire. One day I will be on my deathbed thinking I wasted months of my life on this drivel.

Ohmydayslove · 10/05/2018 01:02

Utter bollocks.

Stopped watching when Bet Lynch left.

It’s all issues now and educating us all. Bloody boring. Used to be full of humour and pathos but not for years now.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 10/05/2018 02:51

Watch proper classic classic Corrie on YouTube from the era of Elsie Tanner, Annie Walker, Ena Sharples etc. My God the acting was fantastic , it 's heartwarming and just a joy to watch.

Storminateapot · 10/05/2018 03:08

I haven't got around to watching them yet but it's hard to avoid knowing what's happened. I think it's got a bit too gritty of late and the really nasty stories eg Phelan are just spun out so far I get to the point where I don't care how they end it, just get on with it!

I've been a Corrie watcher since forever. Lately I find myself letting them stack up in the planner until I feel I can face the latest misery. I stopped watching Eastenders years ago because it was unremittingly miserable and Corrie seems to be trying to go the same way. Certainly not how it used to be.

MightyMucks · 10/05/2018 08:06

edith thank you! Will watch that, I love Mavis.

Stopped watching after Kylie. It was just turning in to an Eastenders/Emmerdale clone with shock storylines. Boring and implausible.
