When will it be safe to watch Coronation Street again?

I nearly gave up on it during and after the Phelan nonsense but was drawn back in.

After Jenny grabbing her coat to take Johnny to see something and all the news of Aiden ive decided to stop watching it temporarily.

Lately ive had enough drama in my own life. I want the light hearted Corrie back.

Do i have to wait a week or two to get these stories out of the way? Anyone know?

It's definitely lost something in recent times.

This is my favourite ever Coronation Street scene and one of television's finest moments imho.

It has just gotten so bleak and depressing, and I feel like they don't make as much as an effort to make the characters relatable or lovable.

Does anyone remember the storyline a few years ago where Blanche (who was my hero) thought that Ken was gay?? It was hilarious and we just don't see stuff like that anymore.

LARLARLAND · 11/05/2018 10:06

I miss Blanche.

I am normally quite cold when it comes to TV viewing; I can watch the darkest stuff without blinking an eye, and actually do eye roll when it comes to sob stories Grin
However I found myself actually sobbing over the Aiden storyline. The bit that really got me was thinking back to when he gave the wee lad his watch, obviously knowing what he was going to do. And all the wee good turns he was doing for everyone beforehand.
I hadn't anticipated the storyline going that way, and it came as a shock. As it so often does in life, I suppose.
He was such a likeable character, which just got me all the more!

Blance was HILARIOUS! Some of her best quotes:

“Kenneth, you had better learn to start taking pleasure from other people’s misery or you are going to have a long and unhappy old age”.

To Fred Elliot on his wedding day to Bev Unwin – “Still, you’re getting on now: if you’re miserable, you won’t have that long to endure it".

"Good looks are a curse Deirdre. You and Kenneth should count yourselves lucky".

Liz McDonald: “I’m going for a job interview.”
Blanche: “What? As a hooker"?

On Liz McDonald – “Skirt no bigger than a belt, too much eyeliner and roots dark as her soul".

On Tracy Barlow – “She’s a cow, but she’s our cow.”

On her thoughts that Kenneth might be gay – “I don’t mind the gays, I just don’t want my daughter married to one.”

On Gail Platt – “She loves a drama that Gail, never ‘appy unless she’s got someone else’s hands round her throat!”

I am going to have to watch that episode again, I only saw the last bit with Gail's monologue which was very sad.

Dieu · 11/05/2018 10:25

Blanche was a total legend!

Instead we have the screechy and annoying Beth. Hmm

MightyMucks · 11/05/2018 10:27

Bringing in writers who could write that sort of stuff Blanche did would be a start.

pickingdaisies · 11/05/2018 11:20

So I caved in and watched the Aiden and David episode, sobbed all the way through. Superb acting by all concerned. But now I'm expecting the writers to stretch the story lines for all they're worth until nobody cares. A hard hitting story is fine, but keep it realistic, and contrast it with some sharp humour, which Corrie used to do so well. Although there were a few glimmers, so all may not be lost. Poor Eva though! Sad

Dieu · 11/05/2018 12:09

The Aiden storyline wasn't stretched out at all, but I was losing patience with David. He speaks to his mother and everyone else like they're shite, even before the rape storyline. And I was uncomfortable with the storyline of the young/vulnerable/not very bright girl he shacked up with.

PollyPelargonium52 · 11/05/2018 12:12

I gave up watching it a few months back as it was too bleak. I need cheering up when it is winter not to feel worse!

I have got back into it this week since the Aiden story but imagine my enthusiasm won't last.

I do miss great characters like Deirdre god rest her soul.

LARLARLAND · 11/05/2018 12:34

Mission Thank you so much for posting the Blanche quotes. They really made me laugh. "Roots as dark as her soul' is just genius.

pickingdaisies · 11/05/2018 13:05

Sorry, dieu, I was trying to agree with you about the Aidan story line, it's been brilliantly done. I meant to say that I hope they don't spoil it now by trying to make it go on and on, like they did with phelan and Anna. Also think blanche was brilliant, thanks for the quotes, mission! I'm hoping Yasmeen gets more funny lines.

Thank you so much for all of the Blanche quotes. She is a legend. You should all skip tonight's episode and watch this instead, it has all of her funniest moments. You're welcome :)
