It's doing my head in! Especially when the OP comes back and starts name checking everyone with a @username.

There's no bloody need. If people have already posted it'll be on their threads I'm on so if they're interested they'll come back and chec the thread!

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 09/05/2018 00:57

Can you not just turn it off?

I'm pretty sure I did, although I can't remember how now.

Yanbu, it's bloody annoying!

Blessedbethefruitloops · 09/05/2018 01:01

@TheRumoursFive yabu Wink

PintOfMineralWater · 09/05/2018 01:01

Why is it annoying? Do you not know how to work the Internet? Just turn the notifications off!

WorraLiberty · 09/05/2018 01:02

This should probably be in Site Stuff, as I'm sure there's a way to turn it off?

SandyY2K · 09/05/2018 01:02

It doesn't bother me. I've turned off the new post on thread notifications as they were getting ridiculous and clogging up my inbox.

This way I know when I've been mentioned in a post. I don't necessarily revisit threads that I post on.

HicDraconis · 09/05/2018 04:38

I find it useful. I’m a very sporadic poster, when I get the notification email I go back and read the follow ups. Why does it bother you so much? It’s only one more character than the older practice of namechecking in bold when you were replying to someone (which was also helpful in fast moving threads to make it clear to whom the reply was being addressed).

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2018 06:28

I have it switched off and never use the function myself so if I did get tagged I would never know.

I have always thought it a bit pointless unless everyone uses it.

MissionItsPossible · 09/05/2018 06:32

I use it and like it. If you don’t like it, turn the setting off.
The only thing I don’t like is when people “tag me” like: @Mission. If there’s a user on here called Mission getting all my notifications I can only apologise on behalf of those that don’t tag properly!

annandale · 09/05/2018 06:38

I find it quite good, though occasionally when someone has tagged me for some throwaway comment it does feel a bit like writing a letter that goes 'To Annandale, 32 Acacia Gardens, Daleville. Well, maybe. Yours sincerely, Poster, 2 Castle Street, Townlands'. It's nice to use when you've got something specific to offer though.

InfiniteSheldon · 09/05/2018 06:40

I switched it off so no idea if anyone has ever tagged me, feeling a bit left out now

BertieBotts · 09/05/2018 07:16

Unfortunately they've actually started supporting it now as a thing so it's not going away.

It annoys me too. We never had issues attracting a poster's attention before. I have turned off the notifications. It might be useful to have them if it was used sparingly, like in a random thread someone's never posted on to say "Oh, you need such-and-such" and tags them so they'll be notified, but when it's every response on a thread I'm already following it seems extremely redundant. Yet it's polite in other areas of the internet so people do it here as well.

NameChangeCuzImAHorriblePerson · 09/05/2018 07:19

Just turn it off

BertieBotts · 09/05/2018 07:21

But turning it off doesn't stop it looking annoying in posts where you're having a nice conversation and someone shows up and does a whole list of @ signs with names! I think that's what OP and some of the rest of us don't like.

And for those who do use it, as pointed out, when people shorten names it wouldn't work properly anyway.

ShotsFired · 09/05/2018 07:21

@annandale that's a good point.

( Grin )

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2018 07:22

It's a bit of a shame for all the people doing the tagging not knowing that the person tagged will never see it if they have it switched off.

Scribblegirl · 09/05/2018 07:28

I actually like it, and I’m usually a right grump around the place here. It’s useful for those ‘What are you having for dinner’ type threads that might go on for 20 pages but LovelyPoster mentioned on page 4 about her lovely pasta recipe. I doubt she’s still reading 2 days and 16 pages of ‘chicken and wedges here!’ later, so it’s a way to call her back to the thread.

I also confess that sometimes I post and then don’t always read every single response if a thread starts rambling on and there are pages to comb through when I’m next online. So shoot me Grin

Masterbuilders · 09/05/2018 07:29

I switched it off. I found it’s really irritating posters that do it. You know the type, the ones who just have the last word and are always right. The ones who get really narky if you’re the type just to post and leave and aren’t interested in a huge bun fight over why their opinion is right.

Turn it off is my best advice.

MaggieFS · 09/05/2018 07:30

I don't have notifications on, but can see why it would be annoying if you do.

I've used it because if you're replying to a comment it makes obvious which pp you are replying to and is a lot easier to do than trying to remember how to spell someone's user name. Wouldn't have occurred to me it's annoying in that respect. Oops.

Moritz · 09/05/2018 07:33

Its good it stops me from obsessively checking "I'm on". Though the way the notification is worded makes me feel like ive been called to head teachers office 😂

BlancheM · 09/05/2018 07:39

Why? If you talk to someone, can they not talk back? Don't comment on anything if you don't want anyone to address what you've said.

BertieBotts · 09/05/2018 07:39

TBH I would stick a little note on my name saying please don't bother tagging me as I have it turned off, but that makes me look grumpy (probably I am) and nobody ever checks those mouseover things anyway because nobody has them set any more.

Wait, how does it stop you from remembering how to spell somebody's name? You still have to type it, don't you?

MaggieFS · 09/05/2018 07:45

Nope - in the app if you type @ it then brings up a list of posters - I presume all of the others in the thread.

KirstenRaymonde · 09/05/2018 07:45

I think it’s useful, if someone replies to me directly in a thread I get an email and get check it. Especially in a long thread. I do look back at threads I’m on, but it’s often a lot so in a fast moving thread things can get lost.

And no Bertie, you can just copy and paste it.
