To think mumsnet isn't white middle-class and is actually very diverse

I got flamed on another another thread and said I wasn't allowed to talk about a "black woman's" lyrics as I was white. I'm mixed Indian and the said rapper i was told I don't have the authority to comment on due to my race is also mixed Indian.

I've seen it happen a few times people assume that a poster is white middle-class even where there is no evidence.

MN is no doubt like Britain and full of all people of all classes and races these days right?

I've thought similar actually. The class thing in particular, everyone goes on all the time about how MN is so middle class. It feels like a mix to me judging on the posts Confused

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/05/2018 21:41

I'm white but I'm certainly not and will never be "middle class"

manicinsomniac · 06/05/2018 21:44

I think there's a lot of diversity but also think that the majority of posters are white, middle class, British women.

But that's because the white middle class is (probably, idk for sure) the largest demographic in the UK and mumsnet is a British website aimed at mothers.

Ginkypig · 06/05/2018 21:45

I look white but I'm not and I'm not middle class

I find that lots of people assume other poster are though

cheminotte · 06/05/2018 21:47

I’m white and middle class I’m afraid. But surely Mumsnet do a census with the actual facts?

HolyMountain · 06/05/2018 21:47

White, middle aged woman and working class Smile, there’s plenty of us from all works of life.

HolyMountain · 06/05/2018 21:48

*walks

jnfrrss · 06/05/2018 21:49

I agree that white and middle class is the most dominant demographic. But up to half (guessing?) might not be so I dont know why some people just assume someone is.

Neither of the above. In fact I would be surprised if we even looked at each other in RL.

Diverse .... yes!

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2018 21:50

I'm white, middle class and British so I fit that MN stereotype, but I don't live in the UK.

I've always had the impression that MN has quite a diverse demographic.

x2boys · 06/05/2018 21:54

i think there is an assumption we all live in London or the south east whenever there is a thread about house prices or social housing it seems it is mainly based on what its like in London or the south east.

WishTheGroundWouldSwallowMeUp · 06/05/2018 21:55

I find it a bit weird someone telling you can't comment on a singer Confused

I find mumsnet quite diverse.

CollyWombles · 06/05/2018 21:56

White, Scottish and definitely not middle class. Probably a tiny bit above the poverty line.

WishTheGroundWouldSwallowMeUp · 06/05/2018 21:57

I find, I am using find quite a lot too.

Ivorbig1 · 06/05/2018 21:57

Yabu abit.
Certain discussions always attract the same response, not much diversity noted by me and I’ve been here about 5 years.

MaudlinMews · 06/05/2018 22:00

Define middle class. One person’s middle class is another's working class.

I’d say that Mumsnet is predominantly soth-east based, female, intelligent and young (18 - 36).

ranoutofquinoa · 06/05/2018 22:01

I'm white, my DH is mixed South African Indian and white so our kids are mixed race. We definitely live oop north! I wouldn't class us as middle class.

Perfecto · 06/05/2018 22:02

I’ve always assumed it’s not very diverse at all. Look at the baby names thread.

Oswin · 06/05/2018 22:02

Whenever someone wants to attack feminist chat they whine about it only being white middle class. Its bullshit. Insulting bullshit. Like the rest of us are not clever enough.
Im white but working class. I would probably be considered chavvy by lots here.

starzig · 06/05/2018 22:07

There seems to be a lot of well off people but also a lot of lower class too so I would say it is mixed. I also have seen a few threads where gender and race appear to have been presumed.

keyboardkate · 06/05/2018 22:12

I get the impression that a HUGE number of MN posters live in London. That's all. Thanks.

Metoodear · 06/05/2018 22:14

I agree I think the other mums site has a lot more working class posters

However I am black and lower middle class

laurG · 06/05/2018 22:51

There is certainly an element of competitive parenting on this site which I think is generally a middle class trait. Quit a lot of first world problems too!

Namelesswonder · 06/05/2018 23:18

White, now middle class and middle aged! But in mixed race marriage and while DH and I both have PhDs and earn well above average we both started off as working class.

allthegoodnameshadgone · 06/05/2018 23:32

Ok can someone please define middle class for me please?
