To think mumsnet isn't white middle-class and is actually very diverse

I got flamed on another another thread and said I wasn't allowed to talk about a "black woman's" lyrics as I was white. I'm mixed Indian and the said rapper i was told I don't have the authority to comment on due to my race is also mixed Indian.

I've seen it happen a few times people assume that a poster is white middle-class even where there is no evidence.

MN is no doubt like Britain and full of all people of all classes and races these days right?

To the pp who says she is upper class, do you mean upper middle class or were you born into the upper class?

Bolokov · 07/05/2018 06:40

Go to youtube 'Keeping Up Appearances' if you want to enjoy dated but hilarious class themed sitcom.

whiteroseredrose · 07/05/2018 06:49

From what I've read I think MN is pretty diverse but people stick to certain threads. Read AIBU and lots of people will talk about managing fine on a joint income of £30k while on Education others are spending that on a private schooling for DC.

UserV doesn't sound upper class from her description. Wealthy, educated, hard working and good at her job undoubtedly but not upper class. It's not about your job, more about inherited land, estates and titles.

MongerTruffle · 07/05/2018 07:05

I get the impression that a HUGE number of MN posters live in London

That may be because around a third of people in the UK live in London or the South East.

Bolokov · 07/05/2018 07:28

My impression is thatits fairly representative on regional class ethnic lines. No possible way of knowing for sure.

Bolokov · 07/05/2018 07:28

that it is sorry

ScottLang · 07/05/2018 07:32

the U.K. obsession with class seems to mean people aspire to MC and then think they are because they meet some of what they see as MC markers.

People aspire to middle class status, but then can't bear to be described as middle class.

BlueBug45 · 07/05/2018 07:42

@whiteroseredrose agree.

You are more likely to say you are upper class in the UK if you grew up in a foreign country were class was linked to wealth.

In the UK very few people are actually upper class, plus frequently those on the female side, due to how titles are inherited, end up middle class.

RoundaboutSnail · 07/05/2018 07:49

I agree. Upper class is the landed gentry, royals, nobility. In Britain, wealth or high job status doesn't make you "upper class".

Clankboing · 07/05/2018 08:01

By reading this I have found out that I may be middle class. I thought I was working class.

jnfrrss · 07/05/2018 08:04

It was the Nicki manji thread I got flamed on, called racist and said I wasn't allowed to talk about her. Even though I share Indian ethnicity with her.

I agree about older, there's a huge amount of baby boomers on here.

I'm from the NW and live on a council estate.
I'm white and working class.

I do not know anyone who uses MN irl. Says a lot really.

littlepeas · 07/05/2018 08:15

Class is far more nuanced than income and level of education. I grew up fairly poor (wealthy family background, father pursued a not very lucrative career assuming he’d inherit eventually, but his mother has outlived him!) but am most definitely middle class. I am faintly amused by the poster who claims to be upper class and quite merrily shared all sorts of details about their finances! Possibly the least upper class way to behave, even on an anonymous forum.

littlepeas · 07/05/2018 08:19

To answer the op, I think most mumsnet users are fairly intelligent and mainly left wing - that stands out to me more than class and ethnicity.

grasspigeons · 07/05/2018 08:34

I'm white and middle class. (I don't have a degree or earn much though)

I have no idea about the actual demographic other than some baby name threads seem to slate names as being lower class (omg you used a hyphen) or don't realise they are from another culture and are mean about them being made up.

There are also more threads about private school than there are people attending private school

Everyone seems to have a degree

JaiPo · 07/05/2018 08:39

I think there are a lot of single mothers on here and I rarely meet any in real life ( of course mothers parenting outside of marriage/relationship can be any class or economic group) but just observing there are lots here. In real life we hang back but on here we just add another to the head count.

topcat2014 · 07/05/2018 08:49

What exactly is wrong with being middle class anyway - I've never actually known.

I know you are not supposed to admit to it, but it doesn't automatically mean UKIP voter, does it..

White - tick
Middle class - tick
Female - cross
Young - cross (sadly)
SE - cross

OliviaStabler · 07/05/2018 08:50

I've seen it happen a few times people assume that a poster is white middle-class even where there is no evidence.

I've seen this trend too. Was rather nice to see someone shot down the other day when they flamed another comment only to find out it came from a black woman, not the 'middle class white person' they flamer had assumed they were.

Anyway, I find having a discussion about race on MN impossible these days.

MrsLaurac · 07/05/2018 08:52

Would consider myself lower middle class, both work highish disposable income own home cars etc and holiday 3 times a year minimum, wouldn't say higher middle as only husband has a degree. Yes, white but deffo not from the south.

Lndnmummy · 07/05/2018 09:26

White middle class here but not British. In a mixed race marriage to black British dh who is frm a working class background. I love the melting pot of our cultures and different upbringings.

Bolokov · 07/05/2018 10:33

Little peas. This did press on me as well as a good few other posters here. I think you can be pretty sure that this nauseating post was either a wind up or some nouveau riche delusion.

BeyondParody · 07/05/2018 11:15

God knows on class - I had a fairly middle class upbringing really, but went to the local comp and now live on a council estate on benefits so

I am white, but on the one side I'm only three generations from immigrants, so again Then all other relations are Welsh, or if you go back far enough there's Scottish somewhere, but I'm not English in any way, shape or form (another assumption of mn)

Hmm, what else... I'm disabled and not degree educated - though hopefully only a few months off being able to edit that bit 🤞
I smoke and vape. Neither very popular here

Things I am that fit in with the idea of mn - a mother, married, a feminist, and umm... I like gin Grin

BeyondParody · 07/05/2018 11:17

How young is 'younger', and how old is 'older'? I'm early thirties - I'd plonk myself right in the middle tbh, but depends what ages other people are thinking of?

Bolokov · 07/05/2018 11:23

Zofloara. Interesting post. I do read a lot of posts on here from people who are struggling to make ends meet and living in very difficult circumstances i.e. trapped on benefits, in poor housing. Plenty from those who appear to be middle class as well. Often depends on which threads you read.

starzig · 07/05/2018 17:30

Always think of it as : people that get more from the government than the give then are lower class, if you give similar to what you get you are working class. If you pay in more than you take you are middle class. Just roughly.
