to have my 2 year old in a cot?

Apparently it is really weird that I have no plans to move my 2.1 year old to a bed any time soon. Is it? He sleeps brilliantly in his cot and he's never tried to climb out of it. We have no further babies planned so don't need it for anyone else.

Not weird at all. We kept dc1 in cot until almost 3. She slept really well and didn't try to climb out.

justabunchofbunting · 03/05/2018 14:10

YANBU my son has only just come out of his cot and hes nearly three.
And when I say out of his cot I just mean I took one side off of it (its a cot bed) so that he could get in and out easily.
He loves the security of the side and wont sleep in a bed with no sides.
He really didnt like the one side off at first but now has gotten used to it.

Just do what is comfortable for your child! If hes not potty trained during the night yet and doesnt want the sides down then just leave him in his cot.

BendingSpoons · 03/05/2018 14:11

My DD is the same age and have no plans to move her just yet. She can't climb out and likes her cot. I was vaguely thinking we might move her at about 2;6 but we are going to see how it goes.

dementedpixie · 03/05/2018 14:11

Ds was 2 and a half when he moved to a bed. He needed free access to get up for the toilet by that point

GoodStuffAnnie · 03/05/2018 14:14

My ds is 3.2. My third child. Will be in cot till 4. Who cares about other people's children and whether they are in a cot? Confused

MizCracker · 03/05/2018 14:15

My son is nearly 3 and still in a cot. It's a cot bed and perfectly big enough, and he's never tried to climb out so...

justanotheruser18 · 03/05/2018 14:15

Why would you change something that's clearly working beautifully for you? Defo carry on with the cot life til you feel it's time to move on to a bed.

May I ask why you are stopping at one child? We are too. It's just.. I like sharing my pro-one child stance.

Monkeymonstermum · 03/05/2018 14:16

Ha, presume you have some overly competitive friends/family telling you how advanced their child is for moving to a bed sooner? They’re probably jealous of your super sleeper! Don’t change if it’s working for you at present. Mine was an excellent sleeper until we took the side off the cot (ages 3.5)!!

ILikeMyChickenFried · 03/05/2018 14:16

My son was still in a cot at 3.5. He didn't want to climb out so was very safe. We only moved him to a bed because we needed the cot for the next baby.

Phase84 · 03/05/2018 14:19

We moved him into bed at 2.5 as he was toilet trained and needed access to toilet by then.

AGreatBigPonk · 03/05/2018 14:21

I think my DD 2.9 is the last of our NCT group to still be in the cot. She bloody loves it. I bloody love it. She can clamber out if she wants but tends not to. I plan to keep her in there until she requests a big girls bed or she needs out for night time loo trips (currently still im night nappies). YANBU at all...keep it as long as your DC is happy with it.

LBOCS2 · 03/05/2018 14:21

DD2 is 2.1 and still in a cot. I have no intention of changing anything until she works out that she can climb out and starts doing so. At which point I'll take the side off, possibly. I like keeping her contained at bedtime!

Hideandgo · 03/05/2018 14:23

I’m keeping my 2 yr old in a cot till she’s 17. No way do I want her in a bed!!

She shouts ‘I no like baby jail’ from her cot in the mornings. If she wasn’t in baby jail, she’s be shouting in my ear beside my bed instead....

Singlenotsingle · 03/05/2018 14:23

Only move him out when he gets too big for it!

Mightymucks · 03/05/2018 14:23

If they don’t climb out it’s much easier. Can’t understand people who put them in beds at 18 months for no reason then complain they won’t stay in bed.

penguinpurple · 03/05/2018 14:25

Err no why does it matter to anyone else?! My 2.5 year old is still in a cot. We're going away on a family holiday and there is only room for everyone if she sleeps in a cot so definitely not moving her until after that!
Likewise if it works for other families to move their children earlier, great for them.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 03/05/2018 14:27

‘I no like baby jail’

Auntyirene · 03/05/2018 14:27

My dd was in her cot until 2.5, then we removed the bar (cot bed) so she's still in it. A friend was recently trying to persuade me to buy a toddler bed, apparently her dd just lurves hers. I can't really see the point in buying a new bed when dd has one that is perfectly fine Hmm

Figgygal · 03/05/2018 14:27

Nope not weird
Some people just want to rush these things when there's really no need

My ds1 was in his cot bed until 4.5 (sides came down when he was 2) ds2 will not. We rushed out either - it matches his other furniture if no other reason

LaurieMarlow · 03/05/2018 14:28

Not unreasonable at all. Only reason I moved DS was because he was vaulting out of it and I feared for his life.

PaddyF0dder · 03/05/2018 14:30

Totally fine. Our eldest was in a full cot until maybe two and a half. When he learned how to climb out we took the sides off.

DailyMailFail101 · 03/05/2018 14:33

If he sleeps great! Don’t change something that works, there will become a time when he’s too big and needs more space but if he’s happy I’d leave him be!

justaspoonfullofsugar · 03/05/2018 14:33

If it is working for you then why change it? My nearly two year old DS is still very happy in his. I would advise keeping an eye out for climbing though - one of my friends ended up in A and E with her almost three year old DD who climbed out of hers and fell and broke her arm in two places!

FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends · 03/05/2018 18:50

Too scared of dying in childbirth thanks to my first birth! Also I quite like it just the three of us.

Thanks all. I've had three separate people go Hmm this week when I've told them he's still in a cot.

Yanbu. DS was in his cot bed until over 3.
I only changed him to a bed when he could climb out.

dd on the other hand, climbing out while wearing a gro bag at 2
