To ban DS from watching a show he enjoys?

DS is going through a phase of watching iCarly and Sam & Cat (sp?) at the moment and I cannot bear it.

They are the worst shows I’ve ever had the displeasure to watch. Utterly selfish, awful behaviour. They talk to each other like shit. There is nothing of any value to them.

However that’s my opinion it’s not fact. I’m struggling to make the decision on whether I should just outlaw them even though they’re technically age appropriate.

It feels a little like imposing my personal taste on DS. So AIBU to ban it or am I overthinking the whole thing?

When we were kids we loved ren and stimpy... my dad thought it was disgusting and banned us from watching it!

yes, I think its a little unreasonable. though i share your hate for those shows with a passion! but kids need to develop their own likes and dislikes.

My DD (9) watch the same and I too think they are shit . However she seems to enjoy them and I do remember watching similar ‘shit’ when I was younger.
I think it’s not a fight worth having, if you have Netflix there’s about another million shows which appear to be equally shit that are age appropriate.

Apparently the creator or something of iCarly has a foot fetish... There certainly are a lot of instances involving bare feet in the show. And some inappropriate jokes imo.

I wouldn't ban it. Seems harsh.

Depends on DS age? Does he understand it's not ok to speak and act like that or will he think it's 'cool' and want to copy without understanding? OK to watch if he's laughing at it, we all watch stuff thats not so brilliant but doesn't affect how we behave so depends on how impressionable he is.
Maybe let him watch but just check his opnion on it.

DS is 8. I remember watching a load of truly awful drivel too when I was his age but there’s something that really gets my dander up about these two shows.

He’s only allowed 30 minutes a day so it’s not like he’s binge watching them and I do have a little chat to him about how this isn’t how anyone would behave in real life every now and then.

If you Goole all the instances of children showing their feet in the shows he's created... It's a lot. He even used the iCarly social media accounts to get child fans to send in pictures of their bare feet.

I used to do a trade off with mine "OK- you can have 30 minutes of want, then we'll watch 30 minutes of something I choose"
Not sure what it achieved, but it made me feel better.

Ah see I love the Simpsons so maybe I’m a hypocrite. I think it’s very cleverly written. I’d much rather him watch something with some merit to it than something utterly vacuous.

Yep 30 minutes a day screen time on the iPad during the school week. That’s not terribly unusual is it? We have the big tv on of an evening if we’re not out or something so he sits and watches a little with us too.

I can’t comment on the actual show though. I wouldn’t want my kids watching it though.

They are annoying but I think they're harmless. I would rather my dd watch some good quality British kids shows but I can't force her.
One of dd's (9) friends is banned from watching those shows as her dm thinks they aren't appropriate. She did however get her dd an iPhone for her 9th birthday and let her get snap chat and Instagram. Wtf? (And she really has got them, she showed us.)

Oh god I had no idea about the shows creator. That’s truly disgusting .

He used to watch a lovely wee show on Netflix called Little Lunch. Aussie show about kids on their lunch break. I loved it, it was so gentle and well thought out.

I grew up on That's So Raven, Drake & Josh, Hannah Montana, Zack & Cody. Miss them :(

YABVU. Back off. Policing what children watch/read/listen to is always a bad idea. It's a particularly bad idea when your reasoning is just that you don't like whatever it is. It's not aimed at you in the first place.

And (for all you dull, self-righteous whiners who have zero understanding of fiction in the first place) children's entertainment has always featured 'naughty' characters and those who mock or defy authority. There's also a longstanding trope of the rude/defiant/mischievous child saving the day, somehow - or learning some sort of lesson, though usually it's only bullying, harmful dishonesty or prejudice that leads to serious consequences for a character.

So get over yourself. Sure, let your child know what behaviour you find unacceptable at home (if you are going to complain that stories influence your child to be 'disrespectful') but don't police viewing or reading. Your tastes are not only not universal, but they are irrelevant to anyone but you.

I think it is a bit unreasonable for you to ban DS from watching it.

Oh, and that 'foot fetish' thing sounds more like a tinfoil hat urban legend than anything anyone needs to get their undies in a bundle about.

Are there any good quality British-made kids TV shows left?

I can only think of Doctor Who (but then I don't have young children). My grandsons seem to watch wall-to-wall American stuff or YouTube amateurs.
