To ban DS from watching a show he enjoys?

DS is going through a phase of watching iCarly and Sam & Cat (sp?) at the moment and I cannot bear it.

They are the worst shows I’ve ever had the displeasure to watch. Utterly selfish, awful behaviour. They talk to each other like shit. There is nothing of any value to them.

However that’s my opinion it’s not fact. I’m struggling to make the decision on whether I should just outlaw them even though they’re technically age appropriate.

It feels a little like imposing my personal taste on DS. So AIBU to ban it or am I overthinking the whole thing?

Just wondering-did you post so incredibly rudely to try to prevent anyone disagreeing with you?

halcyondays · 25/04/2018 09:44

I'm pretty sure nobody ever learnt any sort of lesson in Sam and Cat, bloody awful shite, but I wouldn't ban it. thankfully nobody has watched it here for a while, mostly iPlayer and Youtube.

Mookatron · 25/04/2018 09:46

Sometimes I watch the shit stuff with them and ask questions about it, like 'would you do that?' etc. Quite enlightening (and annoys the crap out of the kids).

metalmum15 · 25/04/2018 09:46

YABU, as long as it's age appropriate then it's not up to you to decide what your kids watch. How else will they discover what they like and don't like? Would you like it if someone dictated which programmes you were allowed to watch? My dc spent years watching iCarly and Sam & Cat and they're turning out ok.

For those of you who police screen time, do you have a stopwatch so you know they don't go over their allotted time?

DragonsAndCakes · 25/04/2018 09:46

Little lunch is the best thing ever!

Could you try and find something else, rather than banning? Mine quite like The haunted Hathaway’s which I’d put between Sam and cat and Little lunch in terms of awfulness. Are they too old for Odd Squad? That’s a bit better still.

Chickychoccyegg · 25/04/2018 09:50

My daughter's all like these shows and I too find them total utter rubbish- but then they think that some of the programmes I watch, it's rubbish but it's age appropriate rubbish, I wouldn't ban it, evetyone should get to make they're own t.v choices (literally never noticed any weird foot stuff)

Shinygoldbauble · 25/04/2018 09:50

My dds (9&11) love iCarly and Sam and Cat. They aren't exactly educational or life enhancing but I think they are fine for that age group.
Not everything needs to be educational and worthy all the time.
I much rather they watch these than the dreadful soaps that some of their peers are watching.

Chunkamatic · 25/04/2018 09:55

I find with my boys that they go in phases. So they might go a few weeks of watching some drivel like Sam & cat or Victorous, both of which in my opinion are awful, and then they will switch to something like little lunch or odd squad.

I do tell them which shows I don't like and the reasons why (I think a lot of American shows set a really bad example!) but o don't ban them as my home is not a police state! If I thought they weren't age appropriate that would be different.

They also watch some absolutely mindless idiots on you tube which really gets my goat!! I'm always moaning about them! But again, as long as what they are watching is appropriate I don't think it's harmful. A lot of the time it's what they talk about with their mates and they don't want to get left out.

icelolly99 · 25/04/2018 10:19

We've tried to encourage ours to watch some of the excellent programmes on Cbbc instead of Nickalodean.

FlaviaAlbia · 25/04/2018 10:23

I've stealth banned Peppa pig, she's a whiny little git. Thankfully there's plenty of alternatives so DS won't be left mentally scarred by the lack Wink

MissEliza · 25/04/2018 10:38

Flowermug you watched those growing up?! You've just made me feel ancient because I watched them with ds1!

Shadow666 · 25/04/2018 10:38

Or you could argue that the reason scumbags like Dan Schneider get away with their crimes for so long is because so many people watch his shows and they make so much money that studios are willing to turn a blind eye to the rumours that have been swirling about him for decades.

There are so many smart, funny, well-made kids shows out there.

MissEliza · 25/04/2018 10:39

Agree about the mindless idiots on YouTube. Does anyone's dc watch Guava Juice?

mostdays · 25/04/2018 10:43

Don't ban it, my DM banned just about everything apart from Newsround and Blue Peter and it did me no good at all.

If I could, I would get rid of Caillou, the Regular Show, Paw Patrol, Power Rangers... the list is endless. But that I dislike/ am irritated by them isn't good enough reason to ban them for my dc, I don't think.

ReanimatedSGB · 25/04/2018 11:04

Oh, whoever wanted 'better' shows for DC of 8+ how about Horrible Histories, The Dumping Ground, So Awkward? They are all funny and (discreetly) educational - and so is Operation Ouch (though I wish it wasn't always on at tea time. Would really rather not learn all about poo or see a severed finger when I've just dished up sausages and beans...)

MissionItsPossible · 25/04/2018 11:12

I recalled the name Dan Schneider and looked him up and read that he created The Amanda Show that I used to watch when I was younger and looking back, yes, lots of jokes and sketches involving feet Hmm

flowermug2 · 25/04/2018 12:05

@MissEliza

I'm 22 Grin

But tbh my fave childhood shows were Rosie and jim and tots TV, but I was younger then

Sillybilly1234 · 25/04/2018 12:07

I stopped my kids from watching stuff I wasn't happy with.

It is tough luck on them but for their benefit in the long run.

There are plenty of other shows they can watch.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 25/04/2018 23:35

I’m not going to stop him watching them. The idea of imposing my personal opinions on him doesn’t sit right with me. I am going to chuck in a ‘Gosh I wonder what would happen if you behaved like that in the real world?’ comment here and there.

ReanimatedSGB It’s not simply that I just don’t like it (trust me I’ve sat through an awful lot of shit I don’t enjoy) or that there’s a mischievous or spirited character in it. I love a good naughty character, Bart Simpson anyone? It’s that these characters all speak to each other in such awful ways and have such disregard for everyone else’s thoughts, feelings, property, well being etc. At the crux of it though I agree with what you’re saying.

Thank you everyone for your opinions. Thank you also for the recommendations for some other good stuff to watch. We’re avid Horrible Histories fans (I think I love it more than DS). Looking forward to checking out the other things mentioned.

The idea of imposing my personal opinions on him doesn’t sit right with me.

Have you not chosen what food he eats or does he choose every night? Can he eat unlimited sweets/crisps? Go to bed when he chooses? Not do homework because he doesn't want to? Ever chosen his clothes? Banned unsuitable films/computer games?

None of the above?

Petitepamplemousse · 25/04/2018 23:51

YABU. Credit your DC with having the critical faculties to watch the programme and not swallow it unquestioningly.

ReanimatedSGB · 25/04/2018 23:57

NotExactly: Cool. The other thing to do is encourage (and provide) lots more stuff either in terms of TV shows, films or books... multiple influences are a good thing because it boosts the ability to think for yourself.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 25/04/2018 23:58

Nanny0gg Don’t be so obtuse. I’m talking about an age appropriate television show not his entire sodding life. And no I don’t within reason impose my personal choice on him. I hate marmite, he likes it so he has marmite on toast sometimes. Clothes shopping is done by mutual agreement, what he likes VS what’s practical, comfortable and within budget etc.

Does anyone's dc watch Guava Juice.

My daughter is obsessed.

leccybill · 26/04/2018 00:03

Loads of brilliant stuff on CBBC. I'm not the beeb's biggest fan by any chance but you can't beat their children's programming, it's such good quality. And no adverts - bonus.
DD8 loves the Worst Witch, Dengineers, Sam and Mark, Tracy Beaker, Dog ate my Homework (like Mock the Week for kids).
