to go to work with tonsillitis?

I have a very mild case of tonsillitis. I am 3 months pregnant and spoken to a doctor (family friend) who has advised that I am ok to go to work, as you cannot catch tonsillitis (only the cold that caused it) unless it becomes severe or I have a high fever.

I don't get any sick pay and really cannot afford to go off work for a week whilst it heals. AIB totally U for going in to work? Or should I avoid and be docked £500 out of my wage packet?

I only have to be in the same space as someone who has tonsillitis to get it, then it turns into Quincy so I'd be pretty pissed off if someone came to work with it.

@Thefirsttulip you can't actually catch tonsillitis so this would be an unlikely outcome. You might catch the cold that caused me to develop tonsillitis however, but many of my colleagues go to work with colds.

Ive had hideous tonsillitis and mild tonsillitis.

I went to work with mild tonsillitis. I’d be surprised if anyone caught it from you.

If you feel well go , tonsillitis in itself is as you say not contagious

I would if I didn't feel rough. I have had viral tonsillitis recently and had to take a couple of days off as I felt awful, but went in after a couple of days.

Tonsillitis itself isn't no but coughs/sneezes and contaminated surfaces just spread illnesses.

You shouldn't be going into work if you are ill regardless of no sick pay.

I of course won't be broadcasting the fact that I have it and would go straight home if I felt too unwell later on. Just wasn't sure whether it was an unreasonable thing to do as I could pass on the virus that caused it. I always go to work with a cold!

@Thefirsttulip it just seems mad to have a week or so off work whilst my tonsils heal just so I don't give someone a cold... if it was flu or glandular fever maybe but.. a cold? I dunno, I'm not very good at taking time off unless it's serious!

I'd go. It's not contagious. That said, it depends on how rough you're feeling - I used to be bed ridden for days at a time, so it affects everyone differently.

You can't catch tonsillitis and a mild case will soon clear.Just say you have a cold at work incase there a few paranoid people who think that anyone with a sniffle should be off incase they catch it.

Then if it's just a sniffle why ask? Just go into work then.

@SilverHairedCat it's really mild. It's just a little sore to swallow and only swollen on one side. Little white dots on my tonsil which is the telltale sign. No fever, cold is gone. If I got paid I would take the time off in an instant but it doesn't seem worth losing £500 over!

@Thefirsttulip I explained that I could only pass on a cold in my OP, which I don't think you read properly initially as you posted that you would be pissed off because you would end up with quinsy from tonsillitis, which you can't catch! Just asking for a bit of advice to see what others would do. No harm doneZ

I had to go into work with tonsillitis as we were short staffed. Anti bac wipes were used excessively and no-one caught it from me.

If you have a mild cold what's the problem? Go into work 🤷🏼‍♀️

And yes, I get tonsillitis from people with it through them coughing/sneezing or infecting surfaces near me. So I tend to avoid being close to people who have it.

But you're saying you're not really I'll, just a mild cold so go to work if you need to.

If you get the white spots does that not mean it’s bacterial and you need antibiotics? I’m sure that’s what GP told me, although he maybe just meant antibiotics for kids (as that’s who we were discussing)

Yes, I think you're OK to go. I'm also someone who doesn't get paid if I don't work so I go if I'm upright, observe good hygiene and get on with it.

If people who think like this were willing to pay my wages, or deal with the aftermath of the lack of them then I'd stay at home. Unfortunately my ll, the council, electricity, gas and water companies don't give a shit if someone at work doesn't want me to go because I have a sniffle, and I don't get sick pay, so I don't earn enough to pay them. So I go if at all possible.

A sniffle is a sniffle and most people go to work with a sniffle.

But being ill and going into work because you don't get sick pay is a bit selfish because you could potentially make others sick who then may need to take time off.

Like parents who send their kids in to school that are ill who then make other kids ill.. so parents then have to take time off with their sick children because one parent sent their kid in sick.
