To be disgusted about Prince Charles racist comments...

Saywhatnoway · 20/04/2018 07:27

... and the fact that what would be headline news for any other public figure has being played down?

Yesterday, Prince Charles told a woman of Guyanese extract that she “didn’t look like she was from Manchester”. The article linked was on the Guardian front page in middle of the night - and now almost impossible to find. I can’t find mention of it anywhere else.

So AIBU to be disgusted that he (or anyone of normal intelligence) would think, much less say such a thing - and disappointed (not sure if that’s actually the right word) that the media doesn’t seem to be reporting in the way they would if anyone else had said similar?

with a father like that I’m not surprised. And the apple clearly doesn’t fall far from the tree for Harry either-wonder if he’ll dress as a nazi for his stag party?

NerNerNerNerBATMAN · 20/04/2018 07:31

He's an idiot. Who thinks something like this, never mind says it out loud? FFS!

So much racism prevalent in the press at the moment. I doubt very much that if the Windrush generation were white then they wouldn't be treated like this. The way these people are being treated is appalling.

LunaTheCat · 20/04/2018 07:34

Bloody hell - what an awful thing for him to say.
I hope his mother and his 2 sons think differently. I also hope he never ever becomes king!

LakieLady · 20/04/2018 07:51

Christ almighty. Got his father's tact and diplomacy, by the sound of it.

That bodes well for him heading up the Commonwealth, doesn't it?

He's one of the reasons I think the monarchy should be abolished. I'm rather hoping that his mother outlives him, to spare us all from embarrassment.

NewYearNewMe18 · 20/04/2018 07:54

Please understand what racism is before you spout off.

Mookie81 · 20/04/2018 07:57

NewYear of course it's racist. He's insinuating that because she's non-white she isn't British. It's ridiculous to think otherwise.

StealthPolarBear · 20/04/2018 07:58

I can't understand how anyone can think like this though. It's not just offensive it's inaccurate and not borne out by experience surely.
I'm not making excuses for him I just find it incredible that anyone can be this shirt sighted
Maybe he was expecting her to look more like someone from coronation Street

umpireStrikesBack · 20/04/2018 07:59

What does "Guyanese extract" mean?

She'd told him her mother was from Guyana.

How lucky that this alleged comment happened at a time when she was able to advertise her book in yet another a Grauniad axe-grinding anti-Royal article.

TerfsUp · 20/04/2018 08:00

Heh. My grandfather, who was Scottish, was born in Guyana. He could have been from Manchester but certainly didn't look like he was from Guyana!

LaurieMarlow · 20/04/2018 08:01

I'm sure the commonwealth will be absolutely delighted with him as their head Hmm

NewYearNewMe18 · 20/04/2018 08:01

Or he could be insinuating that she has too much class to come from Manchester?

An upon opening the story, it's the wittering's of one person, unwitnessed uncorroborated and of course published in a left wing anti establishment rag.

I could write an article like that . Full of unwitnessed allegations. Depending on my political persuasion, get a paper to pick it up.

But of course, the PoW can't defend or deny it because the Royals are above commenting on this sort of old bollox. Yet anyone can write this dirge.

NewYearNewMe18 · 20/04/2018 08:02

umpire sums it up.

c75kp0r · 20/04/2018 08:02

Any chance he was insulting Manchester ? I know it sounds like Im clutching at straws, but I am finding it difficult to believe he could possibly mean what it sounds like - its not as though Manchester is some far flung inbred enclave where a black person is hard to find.

Ohmydayslove · 20/04/2018 08:05

I find this too incredible to believe really. I think he would be far more astute than this and I don’t believe it. I don’t like him by the way but he’s not a gaff magnet like his dad so think this is bollovks

BartholinsSister · 20/04/2018 08:05

If you go to Guyana and meet a white woman of Mancunian heritage, would you be racist for suggesting she didn't look like she was from Guyana?

c75kp0r · 20/04/2018 08:08

If he did mean it, Im not sure it is worth disgust though. there is a lot more insidious racism from people and institutions who say the right politically correct thing but fail to act in a way that would ensure / support equality of outcomes. Thats what we should be getting really mad about

Batmanwearspants · 20/04/2018 08:10

Are we really doing mental gymnastics to try and say he was insulting Manchester?

And even if he was why would that be ok anyway? Obviously it’s not as bad as racism but a public figure shouldn’t be so disparaging of a whole city in the country he will one day rule.

pastabest · 20/04/2018 08:10

I'm inclined to take this with a pinch of salt to be honest.

I have no particularly strong feelings either way on the monarchy, but it's not like Prince Charles isn't extremely familiar and experienced with meeting all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds and as far as I know has been relatively gaff free in this sort of thing over the years unlike his father.

I don't for one moment think he was suggesting that he didn't think she looked British because she is black which is what the headline suggests.

blackbunny · 20/04/2018 08:11

She should have looked him straight in the eye and asked him what he meant, would have been fun to see him squirm.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 20/04/2018 08:11

Well if he is racist he'd better get over it quickly as he will have a mixed race daughter in law in less than a month!

derxa · 20/04/2018 08:11

How lucky that this alleged comment happened at a time when she was able to advertise her book in yet another a Grauniad axe-grinding anti-Royal article. That's about the height of it.

c75kp0r · 20/04/2018 08:13

True, Bat. I shouldnt post guff on the internet before Ive had my cup of coffee to wake up my common sense Blush

Grandmaswagsbag · 20/04/2018 08:13

He’s an idiot. I think when/if he becomes king people will fast loose their patience with the monarchy. After Queenie goes I really think it’s time to ditch them and I generally have quite a soft spot for the royals. We can’t have a person like him as our head of state though!

EachandEveryone · 20/04/2018 08:14

I think he couldve been talking abiut Manchester as well. Maybe he thinks Manchester people all look and act like they are in Shameless.

123MothergotafleA · 20/04/2018 08:15

Being charitable to him, he's not the sharpest tool in the box, is he?
But he certainly is a tool alright.
