Meant to be flying to Cyprus on Sunday. Feeling uneasy but can’t change holiday as no official advice saying don’t travel. AIBU to want to cancel?

Why would you want to cancel?! (Genuine question!)

Scotsmum2017 · 13/04/2018 18:10

What’s happened in Cyprus, have I missed something?Confused

mymickeysbetterthanyours · 13/04/2018 18:11

As I don’t think heading into a potential war zone is conducive to a relaxing weeks holiday

Psychobabble123 · 13/04/2018 18:13

There is an RAF base in Cyrpus, ita not a warzone Confused Don't be so dramatic!

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 13/04/2018 18:14

how will Cyprus be a war zone?

I suppose Akrotiri air base will be used but other than that...

CAnt see the issue.

TSSDNCOP · 13/04/2018 18:14

We were there the night the Gulf war started. Where are you staying?

I'd be more worried that you've packed a cardi, the evenings can be chilly this time of year.

lalalonglegs · 13/04/2018 18:15

The nearest bit of Cyprus to Syria is about 150 miles - much further to Damascus or Douma where the chemical weapons have been used. There are military bases on Cyprus but it's a big island - you'd be as aware of them while you are there as you would be in the UK. Have a good holiday.

Glug44 · 13/04/2018 18:15

Cyprus is protected by every army on Earth via the UN, and Israel / Egypt are very heavily invested in protecting it’s security as it’s the number 1 EU travel destination for their people. You are more in danger of getting into a terrorist incident in the UK than there.

TheFairyCaravan · 13/04/2018 18:16

There’s been RAF and army personnel in Cyprus for decades. That hasn’t changed.

mymickeysbetterthanyours · 13/04/2018 18:16

Hence AIBU. News reports saying if UK start military action (from Cyprus) Russia said they will retaliate to the source.

OP posts:
MissBax · 13/04/2018 18:17

Eh??

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 13/04/2018 18:18

It's not a war zone. It's a bit grim and run down but not a warzone

partydownseason2 · 13/04/2018 18:18

Don’t go then.

Glug44 · 13/04/2018 18:18

Cyprus is full of Russians. If they do Old Vlad will get strung up by his own people.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 13/04/2018 18:19

One of my relatives (in their 70s now) was stationed in Cyprus in the raf. That's how long we've had a military presence there.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 13/04/2018 18:20

once i went to Cyprus and ate a moussaka and got really ill. So yes it could be a dangerous place, just avoid the seafront tavernas at Limassol.

Stringofpearls · 13/04/2018 18:21

I shouldn't worry at all about the Russians going against Cyprus, there are too many very rich and influential Russians that keep money there! It's become their equivalent of the Cayman Islands or similar.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 13/04/2018 18:21

I have raf friends posted out there with young kids there not flying back to the UK go and enjoy your holiday

justawhisper · 13/04/2018 18:24

i know someone out there now on honeymoon, all fine.

mymickeysbetterthanyours · 13/04/2018 18:25

Love this forum - am feeling better already

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 13/04/2018 18:27

ACtually Cyprus used to be a Russian tax haven so that'll be somewhere Vlad will avoid.

HasAnyoneGotAProblemWithThat · 13/04/2018 18:28

No way will the Russians do anything against Cyprus. Too much to lose.

kaytee87 · 13/04/2018 18:30

We're booked to go at the start of June, not worried at all

TSSDNCOP · 13/04/2018 18:30

Seriously though, do t forget that cardi.

A friend of DH's whilst in the army used to have his chaps fire shells onto the beach at Coral Bay. Now you'd have wanted to avoid that, man can't parallel park let alone coordinate a close range missile strike.

LeslieKnopefan · 13/04/2018 18:33

Reminds me of when Adrian Mole tried to cancel his holiday for the same reason!
