Meant to be flying to Cyprus on Sunday. Feeling uneasy but can’t change holiday as no official advice saying don’t travel. AIBU to want to cancel?

My 15 year old daughter is there right now on a school trip. You're being a twat drama llama.

roseannabanana · 13/04/2018 18:49

There are tonnes of Russians in Cyprus - they won't strike there.

My friend's dd did a summer camp in france last year, and met no less than 8 Russian teenagers who lived in Cyprus with their families.

mymickeysbetterthanyours · 13/04/2018 18:56

I do feel calling me a twat (albeit strikethrough) is a bit unnecessary!

I was looking for some straightforward advice and have received it, so thanks for taking the time everyone.

OTT or what Creme? Twat?! Really?!

Go and enjoy your holiday OP. Where about are you going? I love Cyprus.

chipsandpeas · 13/04/2018 19:00

im going in 3 weeks this never occured to me

it seems all the russisans that used to go to sharm seem to have decamped to cyprus so i cant see anything happening

Hersetta427 · 13/04/2018 19:06

I actually went to raf akrotiri to watch a cricket match when I was 18 (that was 30 yrs ago). Even if they did retaliate to the source that would be the Air Force base which is not I assume where you are staying?

Effendi · 14/04/2018 10:59

I live in Cyprus, not far from Akrotiri, I can hear the jets taking off from my house.
Business as usual, nothing has changed.
Certainly not a war zone and not likely to be.

so effendi, does 'Akrotiri' mean 'high cheese'?

Effendi · 14/04/2018 12:49

Ha Ha I have no idea!

Annechristmas · 14/04/2018 13:13

It's not a war zone. It's a bit grim and run down but not a warzone Grin

Helpmeplan · 14/04/2018 13:17

Cyprus is unlikely to be struck by the russians. They might try a pop at the states and uk but unlikely Cyprus. Too many russian mafia in Cyprus.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 14/04/2018 13:26

hell of a lot of Russian mafia in London as well...

Topseyt · 14/04/2018 13:56

Relax. It isn't a war zone.

RAF Akrotiri is there, from where air strikes against Syria are launched, but it isn't actually a war zone itself. Akrotiri is a small part of the island.

We went in summer 2014. Some of this stuff in the news now was certainly on the cards then. We had no problems at all. It's great.

You might see areas that remain a little battle scarred from its historical conflicts, particularly if you visit Nicosia (they call it Lefkosia); but it has a heavy United Nations presence and no problems now.

We found it very welcoming to tourists.

Enjoy.

Topseyt · 14/04/2018 14:01

Also, it is very true that there is also a significant Russian presence on Cyprus.

On our bus route between Paphos and Coral Bay we noticed hotels and resorts seemingly aimed at them.

I think you are as safe there as anywhere else.
