To think she’s a bloody hypocrite?

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 10/04/2018 16:08

One of my friends claims to be very anti-greyhound racing, she’s constantly sharing ‘You bet, they die’ type posts on Facebook. Only it seems that racing is the only form of animal exploitation that she seems remotely bothered about. She’s one of these Facebook oversharers, so is often posting photos of meal ingredients that her and her DC are going to make/do. She uses supermarket value mince, battery eggs etc. Whenever she takes her DC to the seaside they have donkey rides and she’s on holiday at the moment and posting photos of a sea lion (who is kept in a tiny tank in a theme park) doing a show, and her DC posing with said sea lion.

It’s not just me, is it? She’s a massive hypocrite?

Unless she's racing (or eating) greyhounds, not really....

ConciseandNice · 10/04/2018 16:12

UrghYANBU . People who claim to be ‘animal lovers’ and then eat them and drink milk etc are total hypocrites. Very irritating. Just admit only some animals matter and you don’t give a flying f@ck about the rest.

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 10/04/2018 16:13

I don't give a flying fuck about any of them.

As long as they taste nice....

PistFump · 10/04/2018 16:13

I see your point.Yanbu.

Trinity66 · 10/04/2018 16:14

Maybe she just likes dogs?

Boulshired · 10/04/2018 16:18

Sometimes it starts with one then increases, so I began with anti animal testing, then horse and grey hound racing and went to more ethical sources of meat but found it too expensive so now mainly vegetable sourced diet and probably next being vegetarian. With most people it is not all or nothing.

pasturesgreen · 10/04/2018 16:20

Either way, you aren't going to change her, so best to hide her facebook posts and save yourself the irritation.

MoistCantaloupe · 10/04/2018 16:22

It is so specific to just care about greyhounds. Does she have one?
Yes, she does sounds ridiculous to post about one form of animal 'entertainment', but not care about another. I wouldn't let it bother you though, I'd unfollow her, she sounds annoying!

TheCrystalChandelier · 10/04/2018 16:24

I don’t think it’s necessarily that straightforward tbh, and I certainly don’t subscribe to the view that if you love animals and drink milk then you’re a hypocrite.

But people will pick the causes which are most important to them and for their own reasons. I am a meat eater and make no apology for that fact. However I abhore the breeding industry i.e. backyard dog breeders/puppy farming and even proper KC registered breeders on some level, I don’t agree with wild animals being kept for entertainment but I do understand that in some instances there is still a need for e.g. zoos to exist in order to conserve certain species which we, man, have obliterated from the planet due to our own lifestyles.

That doesn’t make me a hypocrite.

OrangesAreLikeLemons · 10/04/2018 16:26

Yes she's a hypocrite.

We are animal lovers (and a vegan household). I've known friends to talk about how they love dolphins and whales, yet they go to seaworld on holiday.
I always think WTF, but never say anything because there's no point. I do sometimes mention I saw a documentary about seaworld called Blackfish and mention that it was very good.
If they watch great. People that do watch Blackfish will have their eyes opened.
For anyone wanting to watch it, I recommend it, and it's available online.

SomeKnobend · 10/04/2018 16:26

Maybe she doesn't realise. Perhaps you should point it out to her on Fb so she can do something about it. Or not.

If only life were that simple! We're probably all hypocrites in one way or another. I know I am. At least she cares about something.

VladmirsPoutine · 10/04/2018 16:39

A massive hypocrite?

Chill out. None of us are paragons of virtue.

If anything I'd be cringing on her behalf at posting supermarket value mince on FB. A bit like when some men sit on the hood of their Mercs making a 'V' sign.

roundaboutthetown · 10/04/2018 16:41

Sorry, not seeing the hypocrisy there. She loves greyhounds, it would seem. Why should she be obliged to love other animals? There are doubtless millions of dog lovers in the world who hate, dislike or have no interest whatsoever in other animals.

Catspaws · 10/04/2018 16:44

That is pretty hypocritical. The number one thing people can do to lessen their involvement in cruelty to animals is to stop eating meat, but few want to admit it!

It's like when people get up in arms about that Chinese dog festival but then happily munch away on their burgers because they fool themselves that cows are different to dogs Hmm

Everyone has their soap box and nobody is perfect but I get why you're annoyed about it!

WorraLiberty · 10/04/2018 16:45

If you're at all bothered by her Facebook posts (and frankly I can't imagine why you are), why not speak to her about it? Confused

It's weird to start a thread on a public internet forum about a so called 'friend', that's basically inviting people to call her a hypocrite.

What sort of treatment to you reserve for your enemies? Confused

Trinity66 · 10/04/2018 16:47

It isn't though, all she's claimed is that she loves dogs by what the OP posted and if she doesn't eat dogs then she isn't being a hypocrite .........

pictish · 10/04/2018 16:51

It is hypocritical of course. It’s self satisfied and ignorant. That’s people for you...often stupid, blinkered and pickled in double standards.
Not that I’m saying I’m any better mind. But yeah...she’s a dick.

IIIustriouslyIllogical · 10/04/2018 16:53

I love dogs but hate cats.

Am I a hypocrite??

CookPassBabtridge · 10/04/2018 16:54

I think most people are like this to be honest, unless vegetarian/vegan. We are all hypocrites in someway.

Catspaws · 10/04/2018 16:57

@IIIustriouslyIllogical you would be hypocritical if you thought it was ok to torture, kill and eat cats. That's a bit different from just hating them though.

@Trinity66 I think it is a bit hypocritical to only care about the welfare of one kind of animal. It's not about whether you love them or not. It's about whether you think it's ok to hurt or kill animals. If you think it's abhorrent to do so to some but not others then it is hypocritical.

It's not the end of the world. EVERYONE is hypocritical when it comes to something!

Lizzie48 · 10/04/2018 17:04

I don't see how milking cows is cruel? It's not as if the farmers are depriving calves of their mother's milk. So what is the issue there? Or collecting eggs from hens?

WonderLime · 10/04/2018 17:07

I (and I'm sure many other posters here) buy free range eggs but can't afford to extend that courtesy further afield to other animals - so the meat I eat has probably had a shitty life.

I recycle to the best of my ability, I try to cut down on plastic, but my DS still gets through n amount of disposal nappies a day,

So what's the answer, OP? Do what I can even if it makes me a hypocrite, or just stop the things I do care about at the risk so at least I'm true to myself?

WonderLime · 10/04/2018 17:08

Risk of being a hypocrite*
