Is Newington Green on edge of Islington an alright area?

Saw good place to rent at a very reasonable price, fits a lot of my needs - I'm not familiar with area though?

Is borders Hackney and seems to be close to Dalston and a big park.

I'm coming from Hampstead / West Hampstead and venturing outside my bubble for the first time in 5 years! But feel like I'd like to try somewhere new in a way plus where I am now is very expensive.

Is it ok?

It’s funky and a mixed bag, but IMO a great area

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/04/2018 15:56

Thank you! Funky and mixed sounds ok!

About to pay deposit bloody hell I get so nervous with big decisions seriously.

Yes it’s a great area. It’s a bit cheaper than Highbury/Canonbury because it relies on bus and overground, but there’s plenty of lovely restaurants and places to go out. It’s nicer in the north (park end) than the south (rail line end).

Lived there for years. It's lovely!! No tube so different feel. Lots of great pubs nearby and Clissold Park.

tshirtsuntan · 09/04/2018 17:02

It's nice, has a lovely fruit and and veg shop (and a fab chippy Grin) they have events on the green in summer, my ds loves the dog show!

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/04/2018 18:39

Getting excited now Grin

Any recommendations for nice places to eat or drink nearby?

I saw the big greengrocer shop it looks great!

There's a nice breakfast place called Cafe Acoustic, I think, or was when I lived there. Amazing pub called the Alma, I think. On Newington Green Road.

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/04/2018 19:54

Thank you! I saw the Acoustic place when there, and just googled The Alma Smile

I really like it, lots of good places to eat nearby, easy to get to Highbury, Dalston, although not on the tube.

Perilla, on the corner, is a fabulous (though quite expensive) restaurant.

Merryoldgoat · 09/04/2018 20:28

Er... I want to live there now...

hibbledibble · 09/04/2018 20:42

It used to be a pisshole until recently. Now it is clichéd hipster try too hard trendy, while being edgy at the same time. It depends what floats your boat.

Trust me, I kind of felt all of Newington Green's rough edges Grin It certainly has a very different vibe to my beloved Southend Green or West End Lane.

But it's a little cheaper, transport looks pretty good for getting all over London, and in walking distance of lots of good places to eat or drink. And the flat itself is the best value I've seen on my quest to find a place to live.

I'm curious to get to know the area.

It’s a fab place! Loads of nice cafes and pubs and close to everything
I grew up there in the 80s and even then it was great!
Lots of hipsters now though
And how the hell you found a cheap flat I don’t know! I thought it was mega expensive now
MUCH more interesting place to live than west Hampstead

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/04/2018 21:32

When I first moved to London over a decade ago, I lived in Brixton. I loved it. Feeling that the Hackney/ Islington border might be similar in terms of the sheer mixture of people who live there.

Brixton is gentrified now though! I went to visit a client a couple years ago and couldn't believe they'd turned Mass into hipsterish offices, and there's a Foxtons Shock

Leaving Hampstead? How could you!!

There's a good cinema by Newington Green.

CreativeMumma · 09/04/2018 21:40

stokie is really nice and walking distance and really easy to get into angel. If you ever want a massage ask for beth at shine on the green - the best i've ever had! Lara at shine also does a good cut and colour.

Green Lanes has really good Turkish restaurants.

I would recommend Z bar on stoke newington high st for breakfast.

Have fun discovering your new area, just don't walk around with your phone out.

MojoMoon · 09/04/2018 21:41

Bit far from a tube but not too far from the London Overground at Canonbury or Dalston.

Lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants Inc the Alma, the cellars, snooty fox, lady mildmay for pubs. trangallan and pernilla for restaurants, dandy cafe etc.
Plus a short hop to the endless numbers of eating and drinking places in Dalston.

Can go to Finsbury park or Highbury Fields for green space.

The Dalston Darlings WI do lots of good events so might be worth joining

BeUpStanding · 09/04/2018 21:42

It's a great area. If you've found a place with reasonable rent snap it up!

hibbledibble · 09/04/2018 22:20

Op I would just advise caution if this flat is really cheap. Often if it seems too good to be true, then it is. Best to check out who is renting it out.

AbsentmindedWoman · 09/04/2018 22:25

It's not really cheap. It's just cheaper than Hampstead. I'm not going to be scammed - believe me, the upside of anxiety is hypervigilence. You don't coast and hope for the best with this stuff if you're like me, it's basically impossible Grin

hibbledibble · 09/04/2018 22:33

Lol, ok! Just mentioning because I have heard of scams where people pretend to be landlords offering a cheap flat, then run away with the cash deposits. Good luck!

blackteasplease · 10/04/2018 00:04

I loved it when I lived there but moved away about 12 years ago. I remember the Alma well.

GreenRut · 10/04/2018 08:12

Yep - great area. We had to move out cos couldn't afford to buy - would love to move back!

NotAgainYoda · 10/04/2018 08:24

Yes, it's a great area. Close to so many other great areas too. Really good transport links

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/04/2018 16:36

I passed my reference checks!!! So unless there's some disaster I can't even think of right now - I'm moving to Newington Green tomorrow evening!

Fucking hell now to pack up the contents of a studio flat asap. I swore I'd never again leave packing until the last minute, but this has been so sudden. I'm going to NYC on Thursday and was expecting to do all at the end of the month.

Everything happens at once..
