There was a thread similar to this a while back that I can't find now but I promise I'm not a copy cat troll!

Last night i noticed that the loft hatch was open in the babies room. I definitely didn't do it, OH says he didn't do it. The cupboard under the TV where the electric and wifi box are was open yesterday, again, neither of us had opened it.
I called the police to report this last night and explained that I'm often alone with an 8 week old baby and that the house is really not secure (rental). Their next steps were to raise with their team manager and to contact me within 24 hours if they felt they needed to take it further, put it on record if not. Presumably this would be useful when I've been murdered in my sleep but whatever.
I've called the lettings agent who would get someone round to look at the locks that aren't locking.
I've heard nothing back from either. My life has no value clearly.

I've been blamed twice in the last fortnight for leaving a poo in the toilet by OH when I definitely, definitely haven't. Clothes have gone missing presumed lost somewhere and the wifi speed has dropped significantly over the last few weeks.

I'm concerned.

I have a CCTV style baby monitor that wasn't being used that I've set up in the living room to monitor anyone getting in which I thought was a pretty genius idea but forgot that you can talk the other way too. Tonight I'm pretty sure someone was talking through it. OH is working away but swears that it wasn't him. I need to be brave enough to get close enough to unplug it now.

There is access through the lofts from the other houses and only one key was given from the lettings agent so presumably another key is somewhere else out there. I can always hear footsteps from the houses either side of me which used to be reassuring when I was by myself. NOT ANY MORE!

Tomorrow I'm permanently closing both loft hatches, changing all locks and learning self defence. In the meantime help me get through the night. What can I do to make it as safe as I can? or channel Kevin from Home Alone And can I do anything on the wifi to see if someone else has signed up to mine?

I was a lot braver in the daylight...

I've got my baby asleep on me and I don't think she'll be much use if I'm confronted.

Agree with bluesky also.

I got a bit like this when one of my DCs was a baby. My imagination ran riot and I imagined all sorts of things. I cringe about it now.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't take precautions, ie make sure house has proper locks and make sure loft hatch can't suddenly spring open (dangerous for baby in future).

But seriously, this could end up being quoted by the police on their end of year statistics as "woman called 999 because her wifi was slow."

TheFreshPrincess0fBelair · 06/04/2018 08:58

We have an open loft it joins nearly all the houses in our street.
We put our Christmas decorations back up and saw our neighbour two doors down doing the same thing and even though we say hello everyday we did avoided eye contact Confused

WhatWouldOliviaPopeDo · 06/04/2018 09:00

OP, whatever you do DON'T read that Dear David twitter thread right now. It will scare the beejeezus out of you. I really hope/am sure it is faked ememem84, because otherwise it's too terrifying to contemplate!

dejectedharry · 06/04/2018 09:02

Dear David has to be fake. He won't let anyone round to verify it. And those pictures of 'David' look like a home made doll.

bumblenbean · 06/04/2018 09:07

Glad you went to your mum’s - I was wondering why you were posting on AIBU instead of getting the hell out of Dodge!

Also, are you sure you haven’t seen the movie ‘Hangman’ recently?! It would mess with anyone’s mind, let alone a new mum’s! 🙈

64BooLane · 06/04/2018 09:08

That David thing isn’t real, it’s someone’s creative project if you like (not sure what to call it exactly). I’m no longer on Twitter but I’ve read about it elsewhere.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 06/04/2018 09:09

I stopped reading the Dear David thread after the chair videos. Not for me, no, no, no!

OP, nope you are ok?
How much sleep are you managing at the moment?

blueskypink · 06/04/2018 09:10

Thefreshprince - you ought to do something about that, it's a terrible fire risk.

TheFreshPrincess0fBelair · 06/04/2018 09:14

Oh dear I hadn’t thought of that thank you, it’s a rented house but I will speak to my landlord, see what he will do Smile

Snuper · 06/04/2018 09:27

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned - you can reset your router to be hidden so that you need to know its name to find it, it won't just show up on the list of available ones (and you can change name so they don't just try old name).

64BooLane · 06/04/2018 09:28

In case I sounded dismissive earlier, here is an interesting (non-dismissive!) link about David and other Twitter ghost stories. It doesn’t actually say it’s only a story, because it is still ongoing and the author hasn’t publicly said so, but y’know. It won’t be “real”.

diddl · 06/04/2018 09:28

" saw our neighbour two doors down doing the same thing "

OMG!

I just couldn't deal with that.

So essentially anyone with access to almost any house in that street has access to every house?

Boggling!

NWQM · 06/04/2018 09:33

Hoping you find out what happened so can have peace of mind. And you've reminded - what was the outcome of the mystery use of washing machine thread. Does anyone know?

KitKat1985 · 06/04/2018 09:43

Can you put CCTV in the house OP?

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/04/2018 09:44

...and this is why I have a 'fuck off' dog!

Not possible with a small baby, I know, but I live alone, rurally and my god the noises I hear some nights in my big, rattly, old, 'no doors lock properly and all the windows are loose' house!

Now I just turn over and shrug and pick up the bits of burglar from the rug in the morning (not really, but I like to think that's what would happen should anyone try their luck).

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 06/04/2018 09:45

This is so scary.

PickleSarnie · 06/04/2018 09:47

My grandad's telly used to pick up local taxi drivers talking. They were definitely not loft dwelling taxi drivers either.

pieceofpurplesky · 06/04/2018 09:47

Are you ok today op?

cjt110 · 06/04/2018 09:52

My husbands old PC speakers, whilst unplugged, used to pick up local radio. Wonder if thats whats happened the the speaking?

PrettyLittIeThing · 06/04/2018 09:54

Glad I live in a flat! Need knew lofts could all be connected. I would hate that.

Goodasgoldilox · 06/04/2018 09:57

Put a KEEP OUT notice on the loft side of the hatch before you screw it shut!

I hope that exceptional courage has returned with daylight and that anger at the intrusion will help you stay fierce!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 06/04/2018 10:03

You've noticed the loft hatch has has been left swinging open on several occasions, but not only did you not get a bolt for the outside; you actually left a ladder in the (baby's) room?
And you only started to see this as a problem at midnight... Hmm

SoozC · 06/04/2018 10:13

@NWQM - No real conclusion to that thread, all the electric went back to normal but the landlord did fill their log pile with logs which the OP's DH said was probably 'payment' for the use of the dryer.

amusedbush · 06/04/2018 10:14

Fucking hell, that Dear David has given me goosebumps! It's most likely fake but it's still so, so creepy!

Fuckingnamechanging · 06/04/2018 10:20

If anyone in a terrace still has lofts open to other houses, get them blocked up now! Wouldn't that be a fire hazard?
