...to consider Elsy as a middle name?

bonnielies0verthe0cean · 28/03/2018 12:41

I would like to give my dd a middle name honouring my sister, as she has always been there for me and is my best friend.

Her name is Elizabeth, but our family have always called her Elsy. (Pronounced Elle-Zee). She goes by 'Beth' professionally, but I don't associate that name or Elizabeth with her.

I would love to give dd the middle name 'Elsy' - part of me thinks it's too nickname-y but the other half thinks it's a beautiful name and nobody knows what your middle name is anyway...

It would be paired with a normal first name:
Jessica Elsy
Olivia Elsy
Freya Elsy
Aurora Elsy
Charlotte Elsy.

Any opinions? (I'm prepared to be told it's awful)

Elsie is a real name...

IsDaveThere · 28/03/2018 12:43

Won't people just pronounce that as Elsie?

bonnielies0verthe0cean · 28/03/2018 12:43

I know Elsie is a real name, but it's pronounced Elle-see, whereas my sister's name is El-zee

I think its very pretty, and it is a normal name, well 18,000 parents thought so in 2017.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 28/03/2018 12:45

Id still pronounce it Elle-see though?

PurpleDaisies · 28/03/2018 12:46

I’d spell it Elsie. It’s middle name so the pronunciation difference will be less important.

ChillyNipsAreCold · 28/03/2018 12:47

Then just make Elze the middle name. Elsy just looks and sounds like a misspelling of Elsie. Elsy & Elsie sound exactly the same to me, I definitely wouldn't know it had a Zee sound.

TSSDNCOP · 28/03/2018 12:48

A lifetime of explaination awaits your child.

ConciseandNice · 28/03/2018 12:50

As above, it's a weird spelling of a common name. If you want Elle-zee, then I would spell it to reflect that, like Elzee. I know that looks strange, but then so does Elsy.

SunnyCoco · 28/03/2018 12:51

I think people might just hinknuouve misspelt Elsie
Elsy doesn’t have a ‘z’ in it so people will still pronounce it Elsie I think x

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 28/03/2018 12:52

Both spellings Elsie or Elsy already exists, so it's not strange.
You cannot change the way people would pronounce it until they know the right pronouciation of course.

You can't name her Elsy - it'll look as though you can't spell.

What about Eliza?

ifigoup · 28/03/2018 12:56

I think it’s a nice name and a lovely way to honour your sister. I haven’t heard the name Elsy before and if I knew it was someone’s middle name I’d probably assume it was from the grandmother’s maiden surname or something. I wouldn’t think it was weird at all.

Elllicam · 28/03/2018 12:59

From just looking at Elsy I would also just pronounce it Elsie.

piercinggelo · 28/03/2018 12:59

It doesn't matter how your family pronounce it. The rest of the world will read Elsy, and hear Elsie in their heads.

That said it's a middle name and nobody uses or knows them anyway!

CoffeAndCream · 28/03/2018 13:04

It's a lovely idea, my dd has a middle name after my favourite aunt but when I see Elsy and hear Elsie.

If you want Elle-zee you need a different spelling.

Rundemlegs · 28/03/2018 13:10

As others have said I'd pronounce Elsy and Elsie the same. If you want Elle-Zee then you'll need to put a Z in it (Elze).

It's a middle name, so it isn't like it'll be used day to day, so I don't think a 'made-up' name is an issue.

RoomOfRequirement · 28/03/2018 13:11

Elsy is not El-Zee, no matter how much you want it to be. Either call her elsy, pronounced correctly, or call her Elzy.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 28/03/2018 13:12

If you want the pronunciation to be Elle-Zee, then go with Elzie, or Elzy.

YourWanMajella · 28/03/2018 13:13

It's a middle name, do as you like. Nobody knows or cares about anyones middle name.

Hillarious · 28/03/2018 13:15

Yes - I'd go with a pp and say Elizabeth is your best option and you can call her what you like. Plus a good way to honour your sister.

IamaBluebird · 28/03/2018 13:15

I also read that as Elsie, you probably have to change the spelling to get the pronunciation you want. Would that still feel like your sisters name to you.

Pretty names on your list Flowers

I totally misread your OP and thought you wanted to name your daughter Etsy Blush

bananamonkey · 28/03/2018 13:20

My friend's name is Elsy (but pronouced Elzy, no one's questioned it as far as I know), shortened from Elspeth, it'sa nice name.
