...to consider Elsy as a middle name?

I would like to give my dd a middle name honouring my sister, as she has always been there for me and is my best friend.

Her name is Elizabeth, but our family have always called her Elsy. (Pronounced Elle-Zee). She goes by 'Beth' professionally, but I don't associate that name or Elizabeth with her.

I would love to give dd the middle name 'Elsy' - part of me thinks it's too nickname-y but the other half thinks it's a beautiful name and nobody knows what your middle name is anyway...

It would be paired with a normal first name:
Jessica Elsy
Olivia Elsy
Freya Elsy
Aurora Elsy
Charlotte Elsy.

Any opinions? (I'm prepared to be told it's awful)

Depends on your accent? Busy is pronounced bizzy not bissy, ime.

BertieBotts · 29/03/2018 18:01

But it's not pronounced Belzy or even bezy so it doesn't rhyme Confused

TammyWhyNot · 29/03/2018 18:57

Use Elzie, which actually has the Z from Elizabeth in it.

I would pronounce Elsy Elzy, except before I said it I would think ‘oh, yoonique spelling of Elsie’ and would quickly adjust to say “El - si”

buttfacedmiscreant · 29/03/2018 19:03

I also misread it and thought it said Etsy.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 29/03/2018 19:58

Well, it's the only thing I could think of where -sy was pronounced -zee. If you can think of a better word, I'm sure the OP and her daughter will find it helpful.

Playdohnut · 29/03/2018 20:11

You could call her something like Louisa Zoe and have the initials spell "Elzy"?

If you went for Aurora Elzy the "-ra El" creates either a glottal stop or phantom "r" sound (Aurora-relzy).

seven201 · 29/03/2018 20:32

It will be pronounced Elsie and people will think you can't spell.

I know an Ellie who's name is spelt Elle. I don't know her well enough to ask her wtf her parents were thinking.

rothbury · 29/03/2018 20:35

Teacher here - Elsy will be pronounced the same as Elsie and people will think you cannot spell.

If you want her to have El-zee as a middle name you will have to spell it Ellzie or Ellzy. Why don't you call her First name "Elizabeth" and that will honour your sister?

I have a horrible feeling this thread will go the same way as the idiot who would not accept that Ame would never be pronounced Amy.

itssunnybehindtheclouds · 29/03/2018 20:51

I think Elsy is lovely name and not too nick name like. It doesn’t matter much how people will pronounce it as middle names are rarely used. And when it is used and mispronounced your daughter can let them know it’s el-zee. My goodness, with all the unique names now this is hardly going to raise an eyebrow! And what a lovely thing for niece and auntie to share.

Amanduh · 29/03/2018 20:55

Well, if you spell it Elsy, people will pronounce it as Elsie and think you can’t spell/were making up a new (yoonique, sorry I had to) variation on the name.

DextroDependant · 29/03/2018 21:19

I would definitely think Elsie spelt wrong.

Ellzee, Elzie, LZ, Elzy to pronounce it your way.

andyandapril · 29/03/2018 21:23

Middle names only serve to embarrass kids. Thats the advice i was given and I’m glad I took it.

ReversingSnail · 29/03/2018 21:56

LZ would be Elle Zed though in British English.

Isadora2007 · 29/03/2018 22:10

Sorry. Another one here who’d pronounce your version as Elsie.

And as your sister is actually called EliZabeth I can’t see why your corruption of it couldn’t be Elzie or Elzee
As your name for your sister is more a spoken one than written it surely wouldn’t matter how your daughters middle name is written.

Hope that makes sense.

Oh and I also think a name ending in a vowel doesn’t suit a middle name starting with an E.

Have you thought about Bethan or Bethany as a different honour name?

FoodGloriousFud · 29/03/2018 22:20

Definitely Elsie
