What can I put in salads that will make me feel more full?

I was going to post this in weightloss but actually it's not about weightloss but about eating to be healthy, even though I would like to see an effect on my weight.

I've been reading lots of books which basically advocate a daily diet of something like: avocado on toast, eggs, green salad with feta, nuts and grains, lots of almonds/walnuts/cashews in between meals, as much fruit and veg as possible, chicken/fish salads.

Every time I eat a salad for a meal it feels like a snack. I feel like it is my pre-meal snack! I don't know if this is a habit I've got into or whether people who genuinely eat like this feel hungry still after a salad?

This evening I had rocket, feta, avocado, walnut, tomato and olives with plenty of olive oil. A big portion. But I did not feel full. I've just had to eat three pieces of toast before bed to even feel like my stomach is full...

What can I put in salads that would make me feel more full?

Eat it with chips. And a burger. Oh.

TerfsUp · 27/03/2018 08:10

BIG plate of veg, small protein & NO carbs

There are carbs in vegetables and protein.

When you switch to this sort of diet it takes awhile to realise that the 'full' feeing you were used to was probably over-full/bloating/stuffed and you will begin to feel 'full' eating salads. That being said, if you are having dinner at 6pm and going to bed at midnight then you probably will begin to feel hungry again. I would have a snack before bed that fits your diet (seeds, nuts, full fat yogurt or maybe peanut butter and apple). That should take the edge off and you'll get to sleep.

Google nourish bowls. They are very filling and healthy

nellieellie · 27/03/2018 09:15

Something chewy and crunchy. Instead of leaf or lettuce try raw veg. Raw broccoli, carrot, cauliflower, sugar snap peas, baby corn. Sounds worthy but with an olive oil dressing is really nice. Raw sauerkraut is also good. Pile it up.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/03/2018 11:28

beans make you feel full. I need carbs as well. mixed grains with slow release, but beans/chickpeas etc are more filling than tomatoes and cucumber etc.

halfwitpicker · 27/03/2018 12:10

Not to sound too sanctimonious but if I still feel hungry after dinner I have a boiled egg and a glass of water.

AgnesBrownsCat · 27/03/2018 12:19

Avoid bread if you want to lose weight . Kidney beans, chick peas , lean bacon , tuna , chicken , baked potato .

AgnesBrownsCat · 27/03/2018 12:20

And you need carbs . Brown rice , whole wheat pasta , potatoes .

stegosauruslady · 27/03/2018 12:27

As pps have said, loads of beans! I like making a salad burrito bowl with spicy chickpeas, leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, red onions, peppers and some grated very mature cheddar on the top.

Mine came in at 500 calories today (I'm not trying to lose weight), but I feel as though I have eaten a LOT more than that!

HappyEverIftar · 27/03/2018 12:41

I only eat salads because they're good for me, I really, really don't like them. DH happily munches away on bowl after bowl of leaves Envy

When I'm out I have chips - Blush salad & chips. Defeats the object but it tastes ok then!

Sorry OP, I realise not helpful..

jessicasmummy04 · 27/03/2018 12:53

I usually have a seeded pitta with humous with my salad or some cheese and crackers... or have a big fruit salad after..

today i have avocado, cucumber, mozzarella, mixed tomatoes, and leaves with a side of mango, melon, strawberries and pineapple..

Want2bSupermum · 27/03/2018 12:57

Salmon, sardines or tuna are good fish options for a salad. I agree with Pp that a hot meal fills me up more than a salad when I'm hungry.

Thirtyrock39 · 27/03/2018 13:07

Anchovies and hard boiled eggs. Really good quality sAlad- vine tomatoes red onion olives etc so it feels more of an indulgence

DorisDayisMe · 27/03/2018 13:36

I agree that eggs are filling. However I think the real problem is that you need to feel full. Three pieces of toast before bed seems excessive and negates the effect of having the salad.

If you try to live with not feeling full you might be more in tune with your actual needs rather than wants. That is not so say you have to be hungry but ‘hunger pangs’ are fine. Next time you get the bedtime munchies, go for a large glass of water with lemon squeezed into it. If you still feel minutes after, then have a small snack. If you keep doing this you will find the weight goes off .

DorisDayisMe · 27/03/2018 13:37

That should say “if you still feel hungry 10 minutes after”

StormyLovesOdd · 27/03/2018 13:57

I always have a small amount of baby potatoes or pasta with chicken or ham and a boiled egg. If I just ate what you had I'd be starving too.

Theres some great tips on this thread so thanks for posting this, I plan to try a few of these.

BellMcEnd · 27/03/2018 14:17

Some of these look nice if you ignore the excitable clean living vibe Wink

Cold brown pasta is a resistant starch so makes you fuller for longer. Be careful of having too much sweet veg as it's not healthy. Red cabbage for instance can raise your blood sugars which will collapse and make you hungry again. It's fine in smaller quantities

BartholinsSister · 27/03/2018 14:40

A couple of Creme Eggs.

BarbaraofSevillle · 27/03/2018 15:35

What are your feelings about hot or cold food OP? I just don't find cold food satisfying, so salads rarely cut it for me, unless they are next to a big slice of lasagne.

How about lots of healthy veg soups with pulses, protein and a small piece of wholemeal or rye bread instead? I would find that a lot more satisfying and equally healthy.

glitterballbag · 27/03/2018 15:37

Pulses- I'm addicted to tinned green lentils

Dvg · 27/03/2018 15:39

Boiled eggs, grilled chicken

Dvg · 27/03/2018 15:39

Pasta, potatoes

KendalMintCakey · 27/03/2018 15:40

I like adding chocolate to my salad...
