What can I put in salads that will make me feel more full?

I was going to post this in weightloss but actually it's not about weightloss but about eating to be healthy, even though I would like to see an effect on my weight.

I've been reading lots of books which basically advocate a daily diet of something like: avocado on toast, eggs, green salad with feta, nuts and grains, lots of almonds/walnuts/cashews in between meals, as much fruit and veg as possible, chicken/fish salads.

Every time I eat a salad for a meal it feels like a snack. I feel like it is my pre-meal snack! I don't know if this is a habit I've got into or whether people who genuinely eat like this feel hungry still after a salad?

This evening I had rocket, feta, avocado, walnut, tomato and olives with plenty of olive oil. A big portion. But I did not feel full. I've just had to eat three pieces of toast before bed to even feel like my stomach is full...

What can I put in salads that would make me feel more full?

Boiled new potatoes (the tinned ones taste ok in a salad)
Pasta
Couscous
Egg

Next time you get the bedtime munchies, go for a large glass of water with lemon squeezed into it.

So not only will the hunger pangs keep you awake, so will the need to keep getting up for the loo.

Add some beans, something like cannalini, pinto, black eye or chickpeas.
Not too many calories if you buy beans in water.

Watching with interest. I’m dieting/healthy eating at the moment and really enjoying salads but I’m not convinced it’s possible to fill up on them.
I think you digest salad as quickly as you eat it. It’s like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in. Sometimes I feel like I’ve been earnestly munching for hours without ever getting close to being full. My jaws get tired first.

Tesco do a dry mix of bulgur wheat and quinoa. I cook it in veg stock and once cooled sprinkle all over a salad. It's delicious.
To be honest, I could sit and eat an entire bowl of just that, the herby nuttiness drives me crazy!

RawhideRingpiece · 27/03/2018 15:57

Mmmm is that fattening?

ItsASairFecht · 27/03/2018 15:59

Boiled eggs are definitely the way to go.

I have found that if I have some chickpeas or lentils it seems more substantial. I'm vegetarian so I will usually have 30gr of vegan feta or other vegan cheese ( not vegan but trying to move that way) or 4 quorn cocktail sausages, or a hardboiled egg with a couple of slices of quorn and mix this with some beetroot and the lentils or chickpeas. I take a green salad in a separate container to eat wit it and then an apple for afterwards. I usually eat something hot in the evening, often a vegetable curry.

I eat low carb and have a salad most lunchtimes, along the lines of spinach, tomato, cucumber, pepper, baby sweetcorn and green beans, with protein and olive oil. I always follow this with some full fat Greek yoghurt with a couple of tablespoons of double cream stirred in. It keeps me going for hours.

Sliced, raw mushrooms (shedloads of 'em) add a lot of bulk without making much difference to the calorie count (although they are nicer if they soak up some of an olive oil dressing. )
They're also useful in omelettes or frittatas.
Grated carrot and shredded cabbage is good for bulk too.
I make a huge Asian slaw with shredded white cabbage, grated carrot, spring onions, and cucumber batons with a drrssing of lime juice, fish sauce, a little groundnut oil, garlic and red chillies.
Topped with chicken thigh fillets that have been tossed with soy or teriyaki sauce and then grilled. Or served alongside griddled tuna steaks.

I like chunky tomato, cucumber, beetroot, grated carrot and lots of lettuce. You need something like ham, tuna, chicken eggs, steak as well. I like frying sliced steak with Old El Paso seasoning and putting into lettuce boats and having a salad on the side too, really filling.

I like a big serving of homemade smoked mackerel pate with salad. Cream cheese, a fillet of smoked mackerel (remove skin, & remove bones by cutting the centre strip out). Chuck in a blender with pepper & some lemon juice to taste. Dead easy & keeps for a day or so in a sealed plastic box.

Also, fresh grilled mackerel fillets, with beetroot, & a horseradish yoghurt dressing. Sounds unlikely but really good.

Avocado and toasted walnuts

Spartacunt · 27/03/2018 16:46

For example, I might include eight pistachio nuts and half a dozen tiny cheese cubes. Then I can hunt them down, decide which tasty bits to eat first and which ones should be saved for last, try to work out whether there is still one more pistachio lurking somewhere... it's fun

That REALLY is not fun.

I would add raw veg like blitzed broccoli or cauliflower or shredded cabbage. Not too huge chunks or it's a bit of a chore to eat.

Plus make sure you mix in the olive oil and other salad ingredients so it's not just dry veg.

Also experiment with mustard, chilli, ginger, herbs, spices and different vinegars.
