To be shocked at this?

AIBU to be shocked?

Went on a Tinder date with a guy a few months ago, and have just found out that he and some of his friends have been jailed for drugs offences.

He’s been given a sentence of over 20 years, so it looks like he’ll be over 50 when he comes out of prison if he serves his full sentence.

It’s not really any of my business at all, especially considering I only met him once, but it just shocked me.

Lucky escape!

PlasticWatch · 21/03/2018 19:33

20 years for drugs?

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 21/03/2018 19:33

That must be some hardcore offence he's committed to get 20 years. Are you sure it's drugs - sounds more like a murder sentence to me!

Sparklesocks · 21/03/2018 19:35

Wow he must have been dealing/smuggling the hard stuff for that sentence!

NameChangeTimeNow · 21/03/2018 19:35

It’s definitely for drugs. The sentences have been reported in most of the main newspapers today. It’s on the Guardian website, for example (it happened in Manchester).

You wouldn't have thought a drug dealer would have to go on Tinder would you? I'd imagine women with habits would be throwing themselves at him.

20 years for drugs offences?? Murderers get less! Shock

restingbemusedface · 21/03/2018 19:39

Hope he paid for the date, looks like they made a fair bit of cash!

NameChangeTimeNow · 21/03/2018 19:40

That’s it, beargrass.

Stupid little fuckers Smile thats their lives over before they've begun.

DailyWailEatsSnails · 21/03/2018 19:45

Murderers normally get a life sentence, afaik.
They may actually only serve 15 yrs on avg, before 1st parole, is perhaps where confusion arises.

OP's date may be out after... I dunno? 7? with good behaviour. But the sentence hangs over his head in lots of ways after that, forever.

Sparklesocks · 21/03/2018 19:56

The dark web drug stuff is still pretty new, I think authorities are under a lot of pressure to ‘make an example’ of the convicted - particularly from the US, which is why the sentences might be longer than normal for the UK.

BoomBoomsCousin · 21/03/2018 20:15

Dealing in class A drugs has a life sentence maximum, this is high for a first time offence but the article says they haven't been able to trace the bitcoin account he used so the sentence will be on the higher side because he's holding on to the money.

Blimey. Hope he paid for the date 😳😂

NFATR · 21/03/2018 20:22

None of them got over 20 years though. The most was 15 and the others got 11. With good behaviour they won't even do half that.

NameChangeTimeNow · 21/03/2018 20:24

But the sentence hangs over his head in lots of ways after that, forever.

DailyWail I thought that too - I wonder what it’ll be like for him to get a job after leaving prison? I imagine it would be really difficult. I’m so surprised that he took the risk of such a long prison sentence - and everything else associated with going to prison - for selling the drugs.

Is there a possibility that, once he leaves prison, he could just live off the earnings he made off the drugs sales with Bitcoin? This is, obviously, assuming that Bitcoin has kept or increased its value and that the authorities don’t eventually find his Bitcoin accounts.

He was so calm and personable during the Tinder date. If it was me, I’d be jittery as fuck, always wondering if I was going to get found out!

NameChangeTimeNow · 21/03/2018 20:28

Oh whoops, sorry - I originally read on the Manchester Evening News that he’d been jailed for 25 years, not for 15 years. I can now that it’s 15.

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 21/03/2018 20:37

Yeah lucky escape they all fugly.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 21/03/2018 21:19

How old is he? He won't have enough to live off the earnings if it's 800k between 5 of them. That's 160k each so maybe they'll get 5 years off it. Less if they've got a habit.

Now I want to know which one you had a date withGrin

Toomanyweeds · 21/03/2018 21:25

Hopefully the profits will be seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

How did he come across on the date OP?

NameChangeTimeNow · 21/03/2018 22:37

NotSuch Grin I met the one whose initials are BA. He’s 26. Would having a serious crime on his criminal record prevent him from getting a good job? I’m sure he’d be after a top job, but obviously that might be closed-off and off-limits to him now.

Toomany the profits could be, I’m sure, but I just wonder whether they’ll ever find the profits. Apparently they haven’t yet managed to find the accounts with the profits.

He came across really well on the date, actually. I definitely would’ve wanted to see him again. Blush He came across, ironically, (although I’m sure that’s the kind of persona that he wanted to get across) as the kind of guy that you’d have no problems bringing back to meet your family. He seemed to be really open and quite sweet really, and just friendly and easy to get along with.

God knows how I come across - I’m sure he thought I was naive, and he was probably congratulating himself for winning me over. I actually ended up Googling him after the date Blush and saw on an Internet forum that he’d been convicted, so I kind of ghosted him after that Blush

But I didn’t think about when/if he’d be sentenced, so I put it out of my mind until now and it came a bit out of the blue when I heard about it this week.

YANBU, OP - I’ve just read about it, and it does seem quite shocking. I’m surprised that they got away with it for so long.
