Hiya!

We've moved into our house 18 months ago, and about 6 months in our ndns bought a caravan which they now store on their drive. However, this now means that NDN work van parks on the road... In front of our house.

Normally I wouldn't see this as a problem but it's nearly hanging over our dropped kerb bit and does block me in slightly which means every morning when I leave for work, I have to return around the nose of his van!

If he isn't actually parking over your dropped kerb then yes YABU to ask them to move from the public road.

Anyone could park there at any time.

You could politely tell him it is causing you issue and could he park a foot further along.

I guess you could politely ask them to move van up a little bit and see what happens, but I don't know why I'm even reading your post when you haven't provided a diagram

I understand but don't see how you can ask them to park elsewhere unless the van is genuinely blocking your view when pulling out or is significantly across your dropped kerb. You've described a situation which you're finding annoying rather than really dangerous.

There is no reason why they can't park outside your house.

Assume you mean reverse around his van?

Why don’t you reverse into your drive —like you’re supposed to— then you’ll get off again more safely.

Unless he's blocking your drive, there isn't much you can do about it. I would ask him to move the van a foot, he might be cooperative about it. We need a diagram basically.

Have you asked him to move his van because it is cauding a nuisance?

Was expecting people to tell me 'I can't legally tell him to move' I know that thought this was AIBU not legal advice!

It does affect my view when reversing though and initially when they came round to tell us of this arrangement they said it was temporary and here we are 12 months down the line!

DP is getting royally pissed off as ultimately their choice of buying a caravan is affecting us, not to mention that on occasion their guests have blocked us into our own house rather than parking further down the street...

I thought it was illegal to reverse onto a road, or is it only if it’s a main road?
Anyway as annoying as it is, I don’t think there’s much you can do.

To be honest I'm not a fan of reverse parking but I wouldn't be able to, currently I'm pulling into the pavement slightly then onto the drive

Not a lot you can do I’m afraid but I feel your pain. Next door park outside my house first to leave their drive and in front of their drive free most of the time.

Have you spoken to them about moving down slightly. I did and my neighbours were fine, I actually prefer them parking outside my house because the shuffle down.

Maybe also ask could they park their 2nd car outside your house rather than the van so it’s easier to see around?

Next door park one of their cars like this. They put one in the drive but often have three and sometimes four.

We reverse in to ours. We drove on forwards once and due to the road camber and slope of the drive the bottom of the car was in danger of grounding . We have reversed ever since, even though the drive has been relayed and the slope is different.

We edge out carefully so we van see around it. When reversing in, if the car is not there, or is parked differently we find it harder.

Ask them to swap the van and car around. If they think it’s no big deal parking a van in front of your house then they shouldn’t have a problem with that suggestion. 😉

I agree with that advice.

I would stop parking on my drive for a bit and start leaving my car on the road where they park. They will soon get the message.

I get that they're not actually blocking your driveway, but aren't you supposed to park a certain distance from a driveway? In Australia you do anyway.

One of my neighbours once knocked on my door and asked me if I'd move my car. He explained that he wanted to put his right up against his work van, so there was less risk of his tools being stolen. I moved it and leave that space free for him now. I reckon if you ask nicely they might help you out.

Sorry OP but YABU. He has every right to park there and, more to the point, as PP's have said, you really should be reversing into your drive.

I never understand why people choose to reverse out and am always a bit annoyed when I see it happening because it is completely unnecessary and can be dangerous to other road users.

Surely reversing out into traffic (when you are also much more likely to be in a hurry) is much worse than into your drive (when you often have more time and other drivers can see clearly what you are doing).

The only way to build confidence at reversing is by practicing. This is what you should be focusing on, not getting your neighbour to move their van to accommodate your lack of driving skills.

Maybe you could set aside some time to practice reversing in when there's not much traffic around? Or even consider booking a one-off lesson with a driving instructor to coach you? It will pay back 1000 fold if it helps improve your confidence, not just in this situation but anytime you have to do a tricky reverse manoeuvre.

You are not being unreasonable this would annoy me too. It's not about what's legal more about being a good neighbour. Like others have said. I go with parking your car on the road to give them hint like others have said.

@Laurel543 as I've already explained I know he has 'every right to park there' but I equally have every right to be pissed off if it's inconvenient.

Reversing onto the drive is not practical irl as the van hinders this and I'm more likely to hit it than doing what I'm doing now.

I think I'll see if I can ask them to swap it. DP wants to park his car there to prevent this bit I think if we speak to them first that will prevent any animosity

Yes you’re technically being unreasonable, but it would annoy the crap out of me too- can they park slightly further back? If you get on ok with then, I’d ask them to move it back a bit, as you’re finding it difficult to safely manoeuvre out. If you reckon they are going to tell you they don’t give a crap, then get arsey, there is suck no point
