Hiya!

We've moved into our house 18 months ago, and about 6 months in our ndns bought a caravan which they now store on their drive. However, this now means that NDN work van parks on the road... In front of our house.

Normally I wouldn't see this as a problem but it's nearly hanging over our dropped kerb bit and does block me in slightly which means every morning when I leave for work, I have to return around the nose of his van!

AIBU to ask them to move their van elsewhere?

I would stop parking on my drive for a bit and start leaving my car on the road where they park. They will soon get the message.

If only. But I'm afraid they will just park there again the minute you revert to parking on your drive. The diplomatic approach is better, see if they will swap the vehicles over first.

If not, and you have to resort to passive aggressive parking as your DH suggests, be prepared to spend disproportionate amounts of your time curtain twitching so you can nab the space whenever they vacate it.

We live on a main road with parking either side of our drive. We ALWAYS reverse in. It's safer, and easier once you get the knack.

I agree with hula008 - why not just reverse in from the other side. I fail to see how this is a problem. If he is overhanging the dropped kerb then by all means ask them back up a bit.

They’re parking legally. You should be able to easily reverse onto your own drive without hitting the van. Perhaps you need more practice reversing?

You should be reverse-parking onto your own drive and coming off forwards. If you can’t do this you might want to brush up on your driving skills. You’ll be at fault if you hit anyone else whilst reversing into a carriageway.

Lots of people manage to enter and exit their driveways with cars parked along the road - try living in a city! If you can’t I’d suggest it’s a driving skills issue rather than a parking issue.

Only if talking to them doesn't work and you are I despair could you apply to the council to get your dropped pavement extended?

If it's obstructing your view as you exit your drive then it is classed as obstruction, which is ilegal. This happened to us and the local bobby had a word.

He may not even realise he is causing you a problem. Or he might, and not give a shit. Asking him nicely to move up several inches, and seeing his reaction will tell you which one it is.
I was doing this slightly when I was visiting someone, my car was sticking out a little making it difficult for their neighbour to reverse out into a narrow road I hadnt even noticed (if road was wider they wouldnt have had a problem, but due to narrowness their reversing circle was reduced)They told me, I apologised and now I move up so they can easily get out of their drive.

I don’t understand why it is so difficult to reverse onto your drive. It’s far safer than reversing off as you will see past the van earlier in the manoeuvre.

Definitely ask them to swap so that visibility is improved - assuming the car is easier to see past than the van.

I'm guessing that the reason it is so hard for her to reverse onto the drive is because of the direction of travel. If I'm understanding it correctly, if she was reversing onto her drive she'd be turning left into the road to go out. Which means that to reverse in arriving from that direction, she'd have to drive around the van and then reverse back around it. Which would be tight and tricky.

I’m presuming you are in the uk so drive past your drive, then reverse in it to the left. That is easier than reversing out and around the van.

So annoying but they are parking legally. It’s already been suggested but I second popping round and nicely asking if they could swap the car/van or park slightly further up so you can see when reversing. You could ham it up slightly for bonus sympathy points and say you’re really nervous, especially reversing and you’re so worried about accidentally scraping the van if you get the angle wrong. Hopefully they'll be nice about it!

Although they are parking legally there is no reason why you don't just go and have a chat with him and explain the situation to him. He may not realise that it is causing you difficulties but if you ask him nicely or show him then perhaps he'll park either somewhere else or further back. (Is there another dropped kerb the other end which means that he has to park so close?)

As you said you know the legals - just looking for advice. My advice would be to ask nicely.

hula I agree. I can only reverse park from one direction because my awkward driveway and cars parking stupidly. I used to hate reverse parking but could do it with my eyes shut now!

I don't know why some people don't understand what you mean about reversing in your drive. I reverse into my drive and have for years. Every now and then our very lovely neighbours (not sarcasm) park a few inches nearer to our house meaning DH has to park right up to the edge of our drive. It makes it much trickier for me to park. It's much easier if I drive up past his car, so in your case drive towards the left in your diagram and reverse in from that direction.

It's it's too difficult to reverse on the left you could always drive up a bit and turn, or come in the opposite way so you are reversing on the right?

I have a similar problem, as I'm an end drive. People actually do park over my dropped kerb. It pisses me off no end as it takes several attempts to reverse on. I have complained several times to the regular offenders, and one has got the message, the other is just a prick. Sometimes I'll just park in front of my drive on top of them so they can't get out (there is only room for 2 small cars outside my house, and only if the other car isn't too far up. They have to park within inches of that car and they will still overlap my drive). If they inconvenience me I will inconvenience them.

Where I live it is an offence to park a caravan in front of the build line of your property,if he moved his caravan to a different place does that solve his parking problem.
