I have had an accident, I fell down the stairs and my ankle gave way, it's very swollen and I can't put pressure on it 🙈 I hate hospitals, and would rather avoid. I don't drive so would need a taxi there but I don't think I can get up to get myself ready. Our minor injury unit has no X-ray facilities. Any way I can bring the swelling down enough to try and walk. The swelling is quite bad I think.

Ahh ok, no yanbu at all op, this is what it is for! Good luck!

Poshjock · 09/03/2018 11:05

I'd put money on an inversion ligament injury. It is possible that when the ligament overstretches it can fracture the either bone it is attached to. It is also a mistake to think that a bone fracture is a worse injury than a ligament injury. You can end up in plaster for both.

You have an injury the most appropriate place for treatment is A&E, you will be triaged accordingly and may need to wait for treatment depending on how busy it is. Either phone a taxi - some firms may be willing to assist you out of the house, or phone a friend/family. You will be in a lot of pain and this will worsen as the adrenaline wears off and the inflammation/local bleeding worsens.

jaseyraex · 09/03/2018 11:07

Definitely needs an X-ray! My mum broke her foot a few weeks back because she fell awkwardly when standing up from a stool. Hope yours is nothing too serious OP, let us know how you get on.

beckymad1x · 09/03/2018 11:07

Let us know how you get on OP! Hope everything is okay!

Spicylolly · 09/03/2018 11:10

It was my fibula that snapped when I fell, I could still move everything and even put weight on my foot. Didn't even swell that much so you really need an X-ray as you never know, good luck and don't be brave in the hospital, I was even though I was in serious pain and they made me wait 4 hours, someone came in with a swollen knee made a right fuss and went straight in, turns out there was nothing wrong and they left 30 mins later. So make a fuss and get some pain relief X

bobstersmum · 09/03/2018 11:18

Shit a shiny brick that does not look good!

liz70 · 09/03/2018 11:20

"I disagree with the whole 'go now' mentality, unless it's so bad you're in actual agony constantly."

That's right, don't go to hospital unless your entire head is only hanging on by a couple of sinews. Hmm

I spent a hour lying on the ground with only a couple of co codamol for pain relief before the ambulance reached me. I wasn't in "constant agony". Did that mean I didn't need to go to hospital? Clearly I did, as I had a dislocation and trimalleolar fracture, requiring surgery the next morning. Not being in "constant agony" means fuck all.

Seriously, take your martyr/"hero" mentality elsewhere. You don't get any fucking medals for it. Just a ticking off by docs for being stupid and not seeking treatment sooner.

RideOn · 09/03/2018 11:28

What SimplySwimming said. Don't try and get a taxi or walk, wait until you can get a lift and then get seen in A&E.

FannyFifer · 09/03/2018 11:31

Oooft, that's some swelling, my DS broke his ankle and it looked just like that. Hope u get checked out soon.

Goodasgoldilox · 09/03/2018 11:32

Put ice on it - frozen peas or something - once someone is there to help you .

MagneticMan · 09/03/2018 11:54

Oooft, that's some swelling, my DS broke his ankle and it looked just like that.

Looked like what?

Is there a picture I can't see?!

iklboo · 09/03/2018 12:02

@MagneticMan - yes the OP has posted a pic which basically looks like she's got a grapefruit under the skin of her ankle.

iklboo · 09/03/2018 12:03

Is that bruising around your Achilles area in the pic?

MagneticMan · 09/03/2018 12:04

yes the OP has posted a pic which basically looks like she's got a grapefruit under the skin of her ankle.

I've scrolled through the thread 4 times and I still can't see a picture.

Not sure if there's something wrong with my eyes or my computer settings!

iklboo · 09/03/2018 12:05

It's at 10:55 on my feed.

Afreshcuppateaplease · 09/03/2018 12:05

I cant see it either

iklboo · 09/03/2018 12:06

Can you see my version?

A&E
Afreshcuppateaplease · 09/03/2018 12:07

Yes

Shock

That is not good

brownelephant · 09/03/2018 12:09

Can you move your foot and toes? If not then this is a sign of a break.

that's a silly myth.

good luck, op. hope it heals well (whatever it turns out to be).

PuppyMonkey · 09/03/2018 12:10

Eh? What pic?Confused

I remember when I broke my wrist ice skating, I was happily moving my hand and fingers back and forth demonstrating how easily I could do it to the first aid team. Grin Can’t be broken I said to myself.

Few hours later I could no longer move anything and I had indeed broken it.

sillyoldowl · 09/03/2018 12:10

Hope you get seen quick op

PuppyMonkey · 09/03/2018 12:12

Iklboo I can see yours fine . OP it looks like you’re growing a second knee to me Shock

MagneticMan · 09/03/2018 12:12

@iklboo yes I can see the picture you posted - thanks. Glad someone else couldn't see the OP's pic, I thought I was going bonkers.

That's certainly some swelling there OP Shock

Cornettoninja · 09/03/2018 12:22

I can only see iclboo's picture too,

Gosh OP, that's definitely worthy of medical attention. I know some walk ins have x-ray facilities but unless I knew for certain mine did I'd be heading to A&E with that kind of swelling.

Hope you're seen quickly Flowers

honeyroar · 09/03/2018 12:30

Yes that definitely needs X rays, but if you raise it and ice it (a bag of frozen peas would be perfect) until your friend comes home from work it would probably be easier for you to get to a&e with someone to help you rather than in a taxi.
