It's driving me insane!

I can't stop coughing during the night!

I just want to sleep :(

Any useful tips on how to stop or at least reduce the coughing?

SnowBusinessLikeSlowBusiness · 03/03/2018 00:44

ivehadtonamechangeforthis · 03/03/2018 00:44

I’ve got a horrid cough too! Also making me puke. (I am pregnant though so that might be part of it). Awful nights all week. Just been trying to sleep but gave up and put light on.

Two weeks Snow?? Oh dear god!

Sympathy here. I couldn’t sleep last night because of it then fell asleep this afternoon and so now of course I am up now. And every time I lie down I cough and my face is like sandpaper and I am heartsick and feeling very sorry for myself!

ivehadtonamechangeforthis · 03/03/2018 00:47

Yep, DD had it over half term, now it's the turn of DH and I. I had a temp for 2 days and stayed in bed, this developed into this poxy cough. Currently mainlining cough sweets and the odd swig of cough mixture. It's worse in the mornings and evenings.

DixieFlatline · 03/03/2018 00:49

I've had the flu and the tail end is doing this to me. Last night I left the honey and a mug with a chamomile teabag out and enough water in the kettle so I could make it in the shortest time possible if I woke up nearly gagging with the tickly throat during the night (which I did, repeatedly). Honey and hot drinks are really helpful. Gargling hot salt water several times a day is supposed to help too but I keep forgetting.

DratThatCat · 03/03/2018 00:51

I'm on week 7 and it's just about starting to ease. Sorry, I've got no tips though. Nothing worked for me 🙁

DetectiveDog · 03/03/2018 00:53

No it’s not ideal OP!
However in my last pregnancy I had actual whooping cough and this isn’t as bad as that, sooo, looking on the bright side and all that Grin

overskyandshire · 03/03/2018 00:56

My coughing is been annoying me. Sounds like a death scene from a Dickensian workhouse.

overskyandshire · 03/03/2018 00:56

*even

TheInvisiblePieceofShit · 03/03/2018 00:57

I found Night Nurse helped me cough less and get a few hours sleep at night. I prefer the bottle of mixture that's like cough medicine to the tablets.

Twofurrycats · 03/03/2018 01:08

I came down with an evil virus that came with a horrendous cough. This is what helped:
Salt water gargle (Cold tbh)
Honey
Night nurse liquid medicine
Sleeping propped up on a triangulation of pillows - two under my head, one under shoulders.
Sounds like woo bollocks and I am fully aware there's no medical evidence for it : Vicks on soles of feet. I was highly sceptical but desperate and tried it. Seemed to work and as it's a cheap option worth a go.

Twofurrycats · 03/03/2018 01:09

Not cold * vile!

123Buckle · 03/03/2018 01:14

Hi, if it is a productive cough mostly at night then I would try a steroid nose spray you can get over the counter from a pharmacy as sounds like it could be post-nasal drip. I would also try to take a Claritin daily. I hope you feel better Thanks

Saracen · 03/03/2018 01:57

Just finally got over it!

Are you sitting up to sleep? That helped me.

PseuDenim · 03/03/2018 02:19

Into week 5 now of this - has been accompanied by a lovely ever changing roundabout of sore throat/headache/sinus pain/blocked and painful ears...

Bedside table now looks like the coughs and colds shelf at Boots

frasier · 03/03/2018 02:37

I'd just about got over it and got it again. Not been right since Christmas. Voice has only come back now since Dec 20th!

I did honey and lemon
Tiger Balm and socks
Homemade chicken soup. Think it was the soup that finally helped.

Lime123 · 03/03/2018 06:10

Yes! And I’m 34 weeks pregnant so bloody annoying. Had it over 2 weeks. Started as standard cold, but felt hot and generally unwell. My nose bled every time I blew it too. Then we had sore throat, voice issues, and a cough so bad it’s made me gag a number of times plus I’ve pulled a muscle in my ribs.

Finally fading now and I can sleep and breathe through nostrils for first time in weeks. Still got a sore throat. It’s particularly bad in evenings for some reason, the tickle causing a cough just gets worse as the day goes on.

As I’m pregnant all I took was paracetamol and honey/lemon drinks. So useless!

LadyLaSnack · 03/03/2018 06:11

Oh thank you for starting a thread where I can whinge about it. I’m 11 weeks pregnant and I think my immune system must be shot.

Got a cold the 3rd week of Jan, recovered, only to get another on the 31st Jan (I remember what I was working on when it descended). Recovered from that by about the 21sy Jan, only to get another brand new cold on the 23rd!! So basically have had it for 6 weeks.

And now the coughing. It’s hurting all the ligaments around where the bump will form.

I have a toddler so I know who to blame for bringing the germs home.

And I don’t want to take anything for it (made the mistake of googling paracetamol when pregnant - I KNOW it’s safe, but I found that one article which said it wasn’t).

Anyway, sorry you’re all feeling so crappy. Maybe if we all sneeze at the same time it will go?

GrannyGrissle · 03/03/2018 06:57

Dd has hot squash and ventolin inhaler and heaps of Olbus oil which seems to help.

LeighaJ · 03/03/2018 07:01

Use pillows to prop your upper body up at night, coughing usually gets worse if you lie down flat on your back.

Onedaynamechange · 03/03/2018 07:05

I had it after Christmas and it lasted weeks. The only thing that helped the cough at night was pholcodeine linctus which is a suppressant.
