Some quick advice about found bag please.

So not really aibu but could do with some fairly quick advice please.

We are in about 10cm of snow and nobody has been driving on the road outside our house since early yesterday apart from a couple of tractors and a huge black pickup 4x4 a few times.

Just been to check on our animals and found a bag half buried in the snow by one of the gates that run along the boundary to the road. Thought it was a head collar otherwise I probably wouldn’t have noticed it.

It must’ve have been there since last night maybe a bit longer as there is some cover by the trees.

Looked in the bag and there is nothing in it at all. It is in really good condition but not brand new. It is black and a sort of back pack/hand bag.

The police are massively overstretched with the bad weather here.

So the advice I need is what should I do with the bag? Should I 101 it? Or local Facebook page? Hang it back on gate? Or just throw it?

I will check later when the snow has cleared a bit to see if there is anything else out there.

I would call 101 - be guided by them.

roseannaleeXo · 02/03/2018 14:09

Don't bother with 101 what a waste of a phone call and people's time . Local media pages best option or back on the gate

roseannaleeXo · 02/03/2018 14:10

Nothing in the bag so probs not that important to whoever left it ConfusedSmile

ScreamingValenta · 02/03/2018 14:13

I don't think 101 would be able to do anything. I would suggest publicising via local Facebook page or similar.

Hofty · 02/03/2018 14:15

I wouldn't phone 101 for an empty bag. It does seem odd though. I'd definitely wonder how it got there!

Paddingtonthebear · 02/03/2018 14:15

An empty bag?

I wouldn’t bother the police Confused

I don’t think I could be bothered to post about it on Facebook either. Someone has probably just dumped it.

LoudBatPerson · 02/03/2018 14:17

As nothing inside I would probably hang on the gate in case whoever lost it comes looking for it when the road clears a bit.

Unless it's a particularly valuable bag then I would probably hand in at the station when the roads clear.

chipsandpeas · 02/03/2018 14:18

dont bother the police with this, stick a post on facebook local pages

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 02/03/2018 14:20

It was probably blown there by the storm. Don’t bother 101, put it on local FB Page.

ShinyMe · 02/03/2018 14:20

I would have a good look around in the snow nearby in case there are things that have fallen out, I think.

Could it possibly have been from a mugging or burglary? Thieves emptied it and then abandoned it?

I would post on facebook - someone may be very attached to it, you never know.

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox · 02/03/2018 14:21

Could be a thief dumping empty bag? This has happened to me, and with description, I got it back.
Do you have email for a local pcso?

Hofty · 02/03/2018 14:29

We need a picture. Or a diagram! Grin

Nicknacky · 02/03/2018 14:44

Phone 101 and report it. It could possibly have been dumped after a theft and they would want to know about it.

pimlicolife · 02/03/2018 14:54

I know in London police don't deal with lost items anymore as it's a drain on resources. Is it different outside London?

SweetMoon · 02/03/2018 14:57

Could have been thrown there after a theft so I think worth 101. It may mean something to someone who would be happy to at least get the bag back even if all its contents are gone.

Nicknacky · 02/03/2018 15:04

It's not necessarily lost properly, esp as it is completely empty.

Tweetiepie1000 · 02/03/2018 15:07

From the look of the bag i think it’s likely that it has been stolen then dumped.
It is too good a condition to chuck it as it is nearly unused.

I thought it really odd that it was empty, but it sounds like everyone else thinks it’s just been chucked.

It’s just odd as it has been such heavy snow on the road it is completely impassable and has been since about 2:00pm yesterday.

I don’t want to call 101 when it is clearly stretched atm unless it is really likely to have been a mugging/stolen.

Should I post a picture of the bag?

I also had the horrible thought that if someone mentally unwell/confused etc had gone missing then the bag could be really important, then I thought it’s just my overactive imagination and I’m reading far too much into just a bag Blush

Also does it really make any difference if it had been stolen?

It won’t help with finding who dumped it and there is nothing inside. It’s a decent bag but not worth much (from what I can tell) it’s also been out in the snow, although doesn’t seem to have ruined it or anything.

OP posts:
Plump82 · 02/03/2018 15:20

I might be waaaay off but my 1st thought was oh god i hope no ones missing/colapsed and is also under the snow

Nicknacky · 02/03/2018 15:23

Of course it helps if it was stolen. There is potential for dna anyalysis and it also gives an indication of direction of travel. Stretched or not, investigation is still done on crime and you don’t know if this was a serious crime (if indeed it is from a crime)

There is nothing to be lost by reporting it.

Tweetiepie1000 · 02/03/2018 15:25

Oh God I just got a lurching feeling in my stomach at the thought of having missed someone in the ditch or something! But the bag wouldn’t be empty?

I will be able to get out and check again in an hour.

If it was me, I would phone my local police station on the non-emergency number.
