To ask what you do when you start getting a cold?

Just that really .... I can feel it coming, "tight nose", phlegm building up....

Is there anything I can do? Or just let it run its course?

Ideas so far from DH and me so far:

  • lots of Vit C
  • bit of extra sleep
  • don't go to the gym...

Love not to have a humdinger - what do you do?

First Defence all the way. Start taking it as soon as you feel that tight nose....

RebeccaCloud9 · 22/02/2018 07:30

Another vote for first defence. Obviously it could be a coincidence (and you never know for sure!) but I've been using it since December when my kids have had colds (which seems like all the time) and I haven't caught one yet.

RollTopBath · 22/02/2018 07:33

Buy tissues and paracetamol. Carry on as normal. It’s a cold.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 22/02/2018 07:35

I once read an article by a doctor who said that when he gets the very first sign of a cold he gets in the hottest bath he can bear then straight to bed. Can't hurt in guess and I did try this once and the cold didnt develop but then It may not have anyway I suppose. I tend to shake them off easily.

Bloodybridget · 22/02/2018 07:37

I announce "I think I'm getting a cold" to DP in a lugubrious voice. I swallow repeatedly throughout the day to check if my throat's getting worse. I mentally work out how soon I could reasonably expect to be over it, if it does develop. Have never found anything else that is worth doing.

However I haven't had a cold for over a year, lucky me! Hope yours comes to nothing or is short and slight, OP.

PurpleDaisies · 22/02/2018 07:39

Tickets, paracetamol, strepsils and tea.

PurpleDaisies · 22/02/2018 07:39

That should say tissues. I don’t know what sort of tissues would help.

PurpleDaisies · 22/02/2018 07:39

I mean tickets the second one there.

I give up. Have a cold right now.

LoniceraJaponica · 22/02/2018 07:40

First Defence

mathanxiety · 22/02/2018 07:43

I use Alka Seltzer cold remedy. A good night's sleep does wonders for a developing cold imo.

CircleofWillis · 22/02/2018 07:44

Mega doses of vitamin C once you are in the early stages of a cold have been shown in double blind clinical studies to reduce the intensities and duration of colds and flu. Does not reduce the chances of catching it though.
I always take 1000mg of vitamin C twice a day then 1000mg a day for the duration.

LizzieSiddal · 22/02/2018 07:45

I get out the day and night nurse.

Night nurse is the best thing about getting a cold as it knocks me out so I get a fab nights sleep.

UsernameInvalid66 · 22/02/2018 07:46

I just carry on as normal - but I don't think I experience colds as badly as some people.

Steeley113 · 22/02/2018 07:48

I’ve woke up with the start of a cold. I intend to whinge all day and think back to all the times I didn’t have a cold and wonder why I took it for granted.

FinallyHere · 22/02/2018 07:50

Peel a clove of fresh garlic, crush and swallow (quickly) and drink a glass of water to chase it down.

I can absolutely feel my sinuses drying up. I keep doing it every morning til the cold has gone

Branleuse · 22/02/2018 07:57

I take 2 multivitamins and i eat a clove of raw garlic (not all in one go, and disguised with other stuff)
I also take a probiotic and make sure i drink plenty of water and try and get an early night

bluebells1 · 22/02/2018 07:57

Sambucol for a week. Nothing else works for me.

CuriosityDoor · 22/02/2018 07:58

Echinacea drops in squash. Tends to head them off if I start doing it as soon as I feel a tickle

niceberg · 22/02/2018 07:59

Definitely first defence. Keep using it until you're a day or two clear of any symptoms. I'd advise against a huge dose of vit C as it can upset your stomach.

Alabasterangel6 · 22/02/2018 08:03

First defense. Noticed they had some yesterday in the aisle of doom in Aldi. Think it was £4 which is a couple of £ cheaper than the supermarket.

CollyWombles · 22/02/2018 08:04

Accept my impending suffering, tell my family and flop on the couch bemoaning my fate and replying to any questions with: no, I have a cold, complete with doe eyes and wibbly bottom lip.

I then realise DH will no doubt catch it and do Man Flu better than I ever could (being man and all) and develop a mild case of depression.

HicDraconis · 22/02/2018 08:13

Massive dose of vitamin C, followed by drinking my friend’s kick arse lemon honey brew.

30gms ginger root,
teaspoon coriander seeds,
3-4 cinnamon sticks,
4 (individual) cloves,
juice of 4-5 lemons,
1 litre water.

Bring to the boil, simmer for fifteen minutes... let cool for a bit and add loads of manuka honey. Drink every couple hours :)

MermaidTailUnicornHorn · 22/02/2018 08:18

Echinacea and orange juice.

AmazingDetectiveSlashGenius · 22/02/2018 08:19

Sambucol before bed

MrsMonkeyBear · 22/02/2018 08:20

First Defense here too and a couple of spoons of manuka honey.
