...is scary? My dd (14) wants me to watch it with her but I’m a massive nappy baby scaredy cat and don’t want to get spooked! So is it relatively tame or really scary?

OP posts:
Sarsparella · 15/02/2018 19:55

Pretty tame, it’s science fiction not horror :)

noblegiraffe · 15/02/2018 20:02

I don’t like horror but loved Stranger Things. It’s about as scary as, say, Jurassic Park.

YouTheCat · 15/02/2018 20:03

It's quite scary in bits but it is very very good.

Strumpetpumpet · 15/02/2018 20:03

Scared the bejeesus out of me, but I’m a wimp. DS (14) enjoyed it. (I did too, from behind a cushion 😱)

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 15/02/2018 20:03

I'm a teacher and a lot of my year 9/10 pupils have watched and love it.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 15/02/2018 20:04

I think you'll be fine. It's really good!

Fairylea · 15/02/2018 20:04

I must be the only person on the planet that really didn’t rate it at all...! My 14 year old dd loved it but for me it felt very teenage, not scary at all.

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 15/02/2018 20:04

My 14 year old watched it and he is quite sensitive with films etc. It's really not scary. I liked it and I'm easily scared like you OP. Grin

MyDcAreMarvel · 15/02/2018 20:06

It's a 15 so your 14 year old year old should not be watching , you yourself would be fine.

VandelayIndustries · 15/02/2018 20:06

The first 15 minutes are the scariest bit I think.

House4 · 15/02/2018 20:10

I was really scared watching this (!) but it’s so well done. Great 80’s nostalgia. The child actors and storyline are first class. Def watch it with a cushion ready to hide behind!

NashvilleQueen · 15/02/2018 20:13

Oh it’s so good. Do watch it. The children are amazing.

Julie8008 · 15/02/2018 20:13

Its suitable for a 14 YO, the monster is about as scary as one from Dr Who. But if you are a lot more 'timid' than a 14 YO you might need to hide behind the sofa a few times. You never really see much its all just dark shadows and an 'imagined' bogeyman.

romany4 · 15/02/2018 20:13

The 2nd series scared the crap out of me
But I don't usually watch anything remotely creepy. Because I'm a scaredy cat

Jonsey79 · 15/02/2018 20:13

Very scary but brilliant!

userofthiswebsite · 15/02/2018 20:17

Oh it's so good and so 80s even the titles and theme tune. LOVE it

ImAPeppermintNightmare · 15/02/2018 20:20

It is a bit scary but I'm a massive wimp and I was OK with it. I would say the tension makes it feel more scary than anything that actually happens. What bothered me more was the abuse of a vulnerable young character. That was tough for me to watch.

Monkeypuzzle32 · 15/02/2018 20:21

FairyLea you're not alone, I thought it was rubbish!

pointythings · 15/02/2018 20:43

Not very scary at all, but really well acted and atmospheric. Also very recognisable if you grew up in the 80s and with lots of references adults will enjoy. I watched it with my (then)14yo and 16 yo DDs and really enjoyed it.

And honestly, a 14 yo watching something rated 15 is a complete non-event in the scheme of things. You just need to exercise parental common sense.

Fintress · 15/02/2018 20:49

We are watching the first series just now, the i child actors are brilliant! It's not that scary (I cannot watch scary movies). Agree with a PP about it being tough to watch how one of the children is treated.

House4 · 15/02/2018 21:08

Yes loved the theme tune too!

House4 · 15/02/2018 21:09

Are you watching it yet OP 😬 (.... needs cushion emoji!)

deadringer · 15/02/2018 21:17

My 14 year old dd loved it.

AmazingDetectiveSlashGenius · 15/02/2018 21:17

I loved it. Wonderful acting. Wonderful Chief Hopper Blush

12yo DD asked if she could watch it and I (reluctantly) said no. But 14 would be fine IMO.

blackchina · 15/02/2018 21:18

Yeah watch it, it's amazing! And let your 14 y.o. watch it too. Creepy but not terrifying.

Stranger things 2 is scarier, but still OK for 14 year olds. I wouldn't let a child under 8 watch it, but 14? No worries.
