Even finishing a tiny bit earlier everyday or working 4 days (or 3) or home working would be a 100% quality of life improvement but the powers that be say no.

"We need you available 24/7 to make us more money - f**k your kids and home life oh and we'll pay you sweet fa and your work pension will work out at £67 a month when you retire".

I was PT for years and then went FT a year or so ago - now when I have time off (this week) I get a bit bored kicking around at home, despite having craved time at home when at work. So you can't win.

I hate it also. I work Tuesday to Saturday so it’s my Monday morning today and I just hate it.

What type of work do you do? Could you move to a more flexible employer?

I feel your pain. My employer is pretty old school and inflexible when it comes to PT/WFH etc (no one is PT). But I like the job and it’s paid well so I’m pretty much stuck. I waiting patiently for them to introduce a WFH policy!

Not necessarily Purple - I run my own business and I love it. It is hard work but at least I feel it's worth it and it is very flexible

I don't know. Isn't the worst bit waking up thinking 'sod it, I've got to go to work today' then having to do the commute there and back. You have to do that if part time.

Share your gloom about pension. I will be working until I'm 150 I think.

Really?

I work from home- part time. I love the flexibility. I get to the gym 3 mornings a week after the school run.
I am there for lifts for after school activities, being. I build down time and relaxation into my week. Sp plenty time to " be off the clock".

Can you not apply for flexi-time or PT there are rules around working parents and you have rights to request it

I hated my job and know that I'm very lucky to have been able to step back and start my own business. However, I'm not making any money and the guilt is piling up. I am effectively a SAHM (but not very good at that, the house is a midden) and feel that I'm living off DH. He doesn't see it that way and benefits from childcare being covered and coming home to dinner on the table, etc.

I'm not good enough at marketing my services and am not sure whether I ever will be. Perhaps when DD is older I'll go back to employment, but the thought of that fills me with dread. And seeing all the other mums I know feel how OP and many PPs do also makes me feel guilty. Sorry, not helping, just offloading.

The OP (or anyone else) does not have a right to be granted it though.

Oh poor fia, I know exactly how you feel as I went through it myself. It's utterly horrible. I ended up having a week off sick and spent it getting my ducks in a row. Did a full financial assessment of our home and family and changed utilities, cancelled subscriptions, moved bank accounts, bought reduced food, batch cooked and filled the freezer etc. Then registered with an agency for admin work. The day I went back, I handed in my notice. The first month was scary - I only had a few days work and we worried about bills, We Gumtree'd some stuff we no longer used to tide us over, and when we explained it to my in laws they were so lovely and filled the car with petrol and did a big Tesco shop for us. We stuck with it and now have a permanent job working 20 hours during the school day. I'm so much happier, and healthier now.

Is that because all of the bills (so mortgage/rent/childcare/electric etc etc) would be more than your partner earns?

My DH earns £24k. Not a great amount. I work pt earning £6k (again, hardly great!) But we manage and our bills are pretty high.

We just don't have holidays, new clothes, fancy cars etc etc.

Personally, i would rather work pt and sacrifice those things for time with the kids, than have all of those luxuries but not be at home to enjoy them?

I am the only one amongst my friends who works full time - I have no option - single householder with large mortgage etc
It’s not just the working ft it’s the fact that I’m the only person who has to do everything else - have no one to share the mental load either
To compound it I have elderly parents and another sick older family member who I have to care for
I’m on my knees and can’t see how I’ll survive the next 15 years till I retire
Although I’ll have paid my mortgage off by then I have no other savings and won’t get much of a work pension

A lot of people have debts to pay off, are single parents, saving for s house deposit, have families abroad that they want to be able to afford to visit, for example. It's a fair point to raise, as some of the mums I know personally could actually afford to lose some income if they didn't consider having two "nice" cars on the drive and two exotic holidays per year a necessity. Similarly, I don't have to think about private school fees, expensive hairdressers and new full wardrobe each season. Every family has a different set of priorities and every right to make the decisions they do.

I earn more than my OH and he works full time.

If I worked more than 20 hours a week I wouldn't earn any more.
My ability to earn is dependent on me having a good balance in life.
