Vegan help!

Rebeccaslicker · 09/02/2018 20:38

I have friends staying this weekend and one has just turned vegan.

We're eating out for the main meal, but i want to get some light bites to have with wine in the evening. I'm just going to get deli stuff from m&s as there's no time to cook - but does anyone have any good ideas for vegans, esp for pudding?

I was thinking:

Crisps
Nuts
Pretzels
Houmous and dips
Salad
Coleslaw (with vinaigrette style dressing)
Stuffed vine leaves

And there my imagination runs out! Does anyone have any ideas??

Risotto with vegan (coconut) "cheese".

Homemade pizza and everyone chooses their own topping.

Sorry rereading and just seen you only want snacks ideas.
Guacamole with tortilla crisps.

If you can get hold of some Swedish Glace ice cream, that stuff's amazing! (From most big supermarkets)

pumpkinmamma · 09/02/2018 20:52

alpro do delicious choc & hazelnut pudding pots, you should be able to get them in the yoghurt aisle. tesco also have single serve ready made cheesecake which are very nice too.

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 09/02/2018 20:54

You can make chocolate mousse using avocado. Sounds gross but it actually works and is easy. Google it!

WiggleMyPlank · 09/02/2018 20:55

Tesco black currant free from cheesecakes - more like tiramisu but rather nice

Talkingfrog · 09/02/2018 20:56

Not sure what supermarket you use, but just did a quick search on sainsbury by typing in the word vegan. It listed a number of frozen deserts. Try the same for your usual supermarket and at least it will give you an idea of what to look for when you go shopping.

WiggleMyPlank · 09/02/2018 20:56

Vegan ice cream - you can get vegan Ben and jerry's, Swedish glacé amongst others :)

mumonashoestring · 09/02/2018 20:56

Hard to beat a big mixture of nice fresh melon, strawberries, grapes, mango slices etc. for pudding.

Make sure you check salad dressings for honey!

I second this, it sounds weird but it really isn't! Makes a lovely chocolate mousse.

WiggleMyPlank · 09/02/2018 20:57

M&S do an own brand vanilla and caramel free from ice cream

LoniceraJaponica · 09/02/2018 20:58

"If you can get hold of some Swedish Glace ice cream, that stuff's amazing!"

I am not vegan, but agree. I have just eaten a Swedish Glace choc ice.

A word of warning about crisps. Read the list of ingredients very carefully. Walkers salt and vinegar crisps aren't vegan as they contain milk products.

Leilaniiii · 09/02/2018 20:58

... and make sure the wine is vegan!

Talkingfrog · 09/02/2018 20:58

Also do a quick Google search. There are a few coffee shops near us that sell vegan cakes. You could possibly by to take out.

WiggleMyPlank · 09/02/2018 20:58

Be careful with crisps as lots contain milk or meat powders. And most vegans prefer to avoid Tyrell's brand (but tbh if they're new vegans they're unlikely to care about that)

LoniceraJaponica · 09/02/2018 20:59

Why Tyrell's? Are they not vegan?

DreamyMcDreamy · 09/02/2018 21:04

Sainsbury's are really good for labelling their wines whether they're vegan or not.
Great list of booze here too for what's vegan friendly and what isn't Smile

Thanks so much everyone this is great.

We've just moved in, and house came with an AGA that isn't working (it's being sold and replaced with something I can work!), so cooking is hard for now hence the lazy shopping. But the home made pizzas will be brilliant when that's sorted (I have GD at the moment, so cauliflower crust pizzas are one of the few things that are cheering me up).

Great pudding ideas thanks, I was clueless! Will make sure I read the labels.

DD and I have been trying out Tesco's new Wicked Kitchen range. She really likes their vegan pizza. The Thai curry is excellent as well, although a bit too hot.

lolitsok · 09/02/2018 21:25

my god daughter showed me this website at Christmas & I’m working my way through the recipes, everything is gluten free too 😍

You can make dead easy choc pots. Melt vegan dark chocolate, and stir it into coconut milk. Poach raspberries, and put raspberries in bottom of little pots. Poor chocolate/coconut milk mix on top, stick in the fridge. I found about 120g choc per 400ml tin about right.

PurpleDaisies · 09/02/2018 21:30

Just roll puff pastry is vegan. Easy to top with sliced apples and Demerara sugar (plus vegan ice cream which is usually really nice) for a quick pud, or pesto without cheese and olives, sundried tomatoes and pine nuts etc for little canapés (or tarts).

WiggleMyPlank · 10/02/2018 02:32

Lonicera they are but some vegans prefer to avoid them because the company permits fox hunting on their lands

LoniceraJaponica · 10/02/2018 10:07

Fair enough Wiggle
