So the other day a friend posted on fb that his daughter was 100% Irish. Dad is English. Mother is Irish. Daughter was born in England. They live in England. His reasons for this is that the majority of English people are dick heads and are hated around the world. Irish are lovelier people and are liked all over the world. He wants her to be liked. I called him out on it and he said he wasn't racist as his wife is Irish?

This behavior concerns me for many reasons but I was after other people's thoughts.

But if we are going to make sweeping generalisations the Irish have been almost universally despised and down trodden in a way that the English haven't. I certainly have never heard anyone call the Irish 'lovely' . I mean racism against the Irish has been around for centuries. As for the English, the only ones who don't like them are those who feel wronged by them so the Irish, the Scottish, some former colonies. I really don't think that hate of Englishmen is much of a thing though, it certainly doesn't compare to the Irish are untrustworthy drunks sterotype. Your friend just sounds a bit ignorant really.

OP, you know that neither English, Irish, Scottish, or Welsh is a “race” it’s a nationality.

I'm irish and i can't say I have ever faced " the drunk untrustworthy stereotype" Anytime I am abroad I always get a very warm reception when people realise I am irish. He must just like the Irish Psyche and want that for his daughter. Wouldn't find It too worrying.

Whether or not it is racism, it is objectionable. Also ironic that one of his motivations is being "liked" - yet he is behaving in a not very likeable way... Sheesh even Martin McGuiness managed a civil word with the Queen

That's the bit I don't understand the need to be liked because of nationality. He wants to raise his daughter as Irish in an. English school where they are all dick heads apparently..... Inflicting these weird views on her that you need to be a certain nationality to be liked.
