To think a slug couldnt do this?

Last night about 2am I went downstairs to get a glass of water, huge orange slug in the corner of the kitchen floor. Out of tired panic and disgust I just put a large glass over it so it could be dealt with in the morning (in the morning by DH).

This morning I came downstairs to find the glass still upside down where I left it but with no slug under, DH claims to not of even noticed the glass and swears he didnt get rid of the slug (which I believe because hes a shit liar and although he regularly plays stupid little pratical jokes he would be laughing by now)

Surely it isnt possible that even this monster of a slug managed to lift the glass enough to escape and didnt even knock the glass over?

And now also I still have a slug loose in my kitchen? How do we get rid of it? and is it likely we have more than 1!?

I wouldn’t have thought that a slug could escape from under a glass, no! How weird.

You probably do have more of them though, i lived in a house a few years ago where the slugs would come out at night and I’d sometimes find 6 or 7 on the kitchen floor at once. Absolutely disgusting!!

I think they can probably squeeze under the glass. We find slugs in our kitchen sometimes I normally get my husband or ds to deal with. They are disgusting vile creatures sorry.

Yes it could squeeze through a small gap so I wouldn't be surprised. Depends on the shape of the glass whether I'd have expected it to tip or not.

The glass is a really big, tall, thick edged drinking glass ( I think Highball is the correct term) Which is why I'm suprised even if the slug managed to lift it and squueze under that the glass hadnt been moved or tipped over at all.

I'd say yes - they can make themselves REALLY flat and wouldn't be surprised if it managed to get out somehow, especially if your floor covering is the slightest bit uneven, e.g. floorboards or textured tiles. Pumpkin was your house Georgian? I've lived in two Georgian properties and both had nighttime slugs that would appear - the big fat orange/brown ones. My theory was that they had nests of 300 year old eggs in the foundations BOKE.

Yes, they are very strong. And yes there probably is a slug in your kitchen somewhere. We get them in the house a lot and when I notice a trail I get up in the middle of the night and often find it in the middle of the floor so I can get rid of it.

I once lived in a house with slugs that came out at night in the kitchen.
I was obsessive about checking things and cleaning in case there were slugs on them there never were until......
One day I got the kenwood sandwich toaster out.....for once I forgot to check it.....plugged it in and switched it on........started to hear a sizzling noise.....thought it was strange as I hadn't put the sandwiches in yet.
the aroma of toasted slug is really thoroughly unpleasant. I was retching.
Had to throw the toaster away as I couldn't face the idea of ever switching it on again no matter how much boiling water and bleach had been applied to it never liked the bloody thing anyway, husband bought it
The moral of the story is always check your appliances before you switch them on.

Yes it could. In our last house the buggers would squeeze up between the (very tight) joins in the wooden floors. I used to come down at night for a drink and inadvertently step on them - awful for them and me.

That is vile! How do you all mange with slugs in your kitchen? They climb up surfaces don't they? (They do my recycling bins anyway!)

We have white polished tiles so I cant seem to see any slug trails anywhere unfortunantly, the glass wansnt over the edge of the tile either it was right in the middle so the surface is really flat.
I dont think I was dreaming, I stood and stared at the slug moving for quite a few minutes trying to figure out what to do with it.
I wish I'd taken a picture because now DH is saying it was probably just a dream slug.

I'm going to suggest moving if we have a slug infestation but we have lived here nearly 3 years and never encountered one before.

Yes, slugs can do this. I had a house where they’d squeeze in the minute gap between the radiator pipes and the floorboard to come up from underneath the house. Then I’d see the silvery trails on the floor in the morning. Euurgh.

The worst was thinking I had a mouse when I could hear rustling in the kitchen, to find a monster slug happily munching on the newspaper - very loudly.

Slugs can go incredibly flat, and squeeze through tiny gaps. I would think it could just slither under the side of a glass. They come under our back door sometimes, the slithery fuckers.

Why did I read this thread?? I absolutely hate slugs I would rather 100 spiders than one slug. A few years ago I used to live in a house with a leaky washing machine so the damp underneath attracted the slugs and there would be loads all over the kitchen floor during the night . I've moved house twice since then and if I get up in the night I have to switch all the lights on when I enter a room in case there's a slug party going on. The thought of one escaping from underneath a glass makes my stomach turn but not as much as the toasted slug
