To think a slug couldnt do this?

Last night about 2am I went downstairs to get a glass of water, huge orange slug in the corner of the kitchen floor. Out of tired panic and disgust I just put a large glass over it so it could be dealt with in the morning (in the morning by DH).

This morning I came downstairs to find the glass still upside down where I left it but with no slug under, DH claims to not of even noticed the glass and swears he didnt get rid of the slug (which I believe because hes a shit liar and although he regularly plays stupid little pratical jokes he would be laughing by now)

Surely it isnt possible that even this monster of a slug managed to lift the glass enough to escape and didnt even knock the glass over?

And now also I still have a slug loose in my kitchen? How do we get rid of it? and is it likely we have more than 1!?

Eeeewww!! Slugs!!! Boak. If repulsiveness was an Olympic event they would win. (we need a vomit emoji on mn).

falsepriest · 05/02/2018 10:44

I would rather 100 spiders than one slug

Araaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

We used to get slugs all over the kitchen floor at night in our old rented flat - there was a fair-sized gap under the back door. I put copper tape all round the floor by the back door (think I might have done it up the sides of the doorway too) and never saw another slug trail Grin

Hogtini · 05/02/2018 10:46

Just when I thought I couldn't hate slugs any more than I already do..I read this! Shock

IamAporcupine · 05/02/2018 10:46

We also have slugs that come out at midnight!

We used to have 4-5 at once, I find them disgusting so DH used to deal with them. We have been were slug-free for quite a while now, but unfortunately I saw a small one last night. They are back!

Re your question - I would have never thought they could escape!

Basseting · 05/02/2018 10:46

i have a Basset hound. It's like a VERY BIG slug.
That lives for 10 years (sigh)

Also wondering why people get slugs in their kitchens? That would terrify me!

We get one in our kitchen at LEAST once a month or so......... We have the windows are doors firmly closed, and so I don't know where they are getting in. They don't seem to go any further though. (I mean, like I have never seen them in the dining room, or lounge, or hall cupboard etc.....) If they started getting into the bedrooms, I would have the place laced with fucking slug pellets!!! Shock

HungerOfThePine · 05/02/2018 10:51

I've had this problem sometimes during the night, I usually just pick them up with a tissue and around them out the back door into the garden. I suspect they are coming in a hole next to my back door so sometimes chuck a pile of salt around it to deter them. Not had a problem for a while now thankfully. Gross creatures.

purpleunicorns · 05/02/2018 10:51

I used to get loads of slugs in my kitchen on a night in my old house Envy < not envy

If you have an old spray bottle pour some bleach in and a mixture of salt and hot water and spray it around any outside doors/windows/cracks every night before you go to bed for a few days. It worked for me and I never saw them again

StandardRussian66 · 05/02/2018 10:51

Slugs can teleport. I found a slug in kettle before. Kettle had a filter.

Basseting · 05/02/2018 10:54

I can never hear the name Hugh FW without thinking of 'slime' anyway!

Slartybartfast · 05/02/2018 10:56

spread salt everywhere

whiskyowl · 05/02/2018 11:02

They can get through the tiniest gaps - maybe the glass wasn't totally sealed to the floor?

ReanimatedSGB · 05/02/2018 11:03

I feel your pain, all of you. We have a slug problem (old victorian terraced house). I have tried various things - pellets, salt, slug deterrent gel. Nothing seems to work.

Hogtini · 05/02/2018 11:04

In a kettle?!? faints

rightsaidfrederickII · 05/02/2018 11:04

I hate slugs.

In one previous rented houses, I spent one of the most effective £1 coins of my student life on tub of slug pellets, and sprinkled them liberally around all the edges of the kitchen. Little blue pellets in odd places were a small price to pay for not having to avoid the kitchen at night for fear of finding a slug.

HemanOrSheRa · 05/02/2018 11:07

No the slug wouldn't be able to get out from under the glass - on it's own. It's slimey mates rallied round and helped it out Grin.

NoSquirrels · 05/02/2018 11:09

Yes - have also lived in a slug-infested house when sleep deprived with a newborn and up at odd hours. They ate the cat food. Urgh.

We moved!

Biddie191 · 05/02/2018 11:10

standardrussian - maybe it was in the water supply, came out of the tap.....
We get lots here (again, old house) and as in Winter I get up while it's still dark, I often find the evil monsters on the floor. Slime trails everywhere. Once my daughter's homework book had lots of little holes all over it where one had munched on the paper (to be fair it had been stuck behind the sofa for a week). A new slant on 'the dog ate my homework....'

Best method of destruction is either salt or washing up liquid - but they make one hell of a slimy mess! Putting them in the fire can be quite satisfying too..... (gives evil laugh...)

chirpyburbycheapsheep · 05/02/2018 11:13

One slug wouldn't bother me. A cornucopia of slugs might (that's actually the official name and now I feel rather smug....)

In the house I grew up in, way in the deep dark countryside, we had an ant infestation in the bathroom. My dad put poison down but still, as I bathed there was a procession of ants marching along the side of the bath.....

The poster who claimed they would prefer 100 spiders than 1 slug - this is a psychology I will never understand

upsideup · 05/02/2018 11:17

Going to do some sealing this afternoon and try and find out where they could be hiding, we are also going to thoroughly clean the kitchen.
We have small DC as well as dogs and cats so I dont think toxic slug pelets is really and option, so going to try salt tonight.

TheDogHasEatenIt · 05/02/2018 11:22

I did exactly the same, glass over it (on a tiled floor) to deal with in the morning and it was GONE! Went through a few months of having the slimy fuckers in the kitchen every night. Often collect 3 or 4 before bed every night and then the next night, 3 or 4 back in the kitchen. I lost count of how many slugs i disposed of. In the end, we were ruthless with the silicone and sealed every crack. Hardly ever get them now.

babyccinoo · 05/02/2018 11:23

The biggest slugs I ever saw were in the ditch of a National Trust period property in London. They were bigger and fatter than my hand

FingersCrossedHard · 05/02/2018 11:27

if I get up in the night I have to switch all the lights on when I enter a room in case there's a slug party going on 😂
