I’ve just seen an advert for it on Facebook and think it could be an option for me.

Tampons are a pain for me as we have a septic tank so I can’t flush them at home. Also not keen on pads.

Anyone got any experience? Heard they can be tricky to get out but maybe just take a bit of getting used to..

Most. Awesome. Thing. Ever. Yes, just takes a bit of getting used to - I changed mine in the shower the first few times - but I got used to it faster than I thought I would.

TheWelshDragon · 02/02/2018 20:46

Great! Changed my life. I recommend meluna because you can get different sizes and softness plus different grips. And different colours!

WishingOnABar · 02/02/2018 20:46

I tried one my last period and really struggled with it. I know a lot of mumsnetters are keen though.

Georgeofthejungle · 02/02/2018 20:47

That’s a good idea about the shower.

Do you have a specific brand? Are cheap ones ok or better going with this mooncup one? 🤔

Are you supposed to flush tampons ? I thought that was a no no anyway ?

I’ve always wanted a try just never been brave enough

NeverHadANickname · 02/02/2018 20:48

I think I spent a couple of years trying to convince myself I like them but realistically it hurts when I take it out and it pings open. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I have recently gone back to tampons but find them SO drying and (sorry, TMI) end up being itchy for a week after my period.

I'd say give it a go though, I really want to love mine and will try again.

franhat · 02/02/2018 20:49

Totally recommend. I always had problems with tampons and towels, swapped to a cup and never looked back.

turophile · 02/02/2018 20:49

You shouldn't flush tampons anywhere, septic tank or not!! They're not biodegradable and clog up the sewers.

Georgeofthejungle · 02/02/2018 20:49

Cross post Welshdragon. Will have a look at Meluna. Like the idea of a pretty colour. :)

Balloondog · 02/02/2018 20:50

They're fab, have changed my life... give one a go!

Taking it out does take a bit of practice so it doesn't hurt (trick is to break the seal while it's still inside) but so much cleaner and easier and much better for you (no risk of TSS) and for the environment (btw you shouldn't be flushing tampons no matter if you're connected to the main sewage system or not).

Give one a go!

puffyisgood · 02/02/2018 20:50

Don't flush tampons, no matter what.

Georgeofthejungle · 02/02/2018 20:52

Oh really?! I had no idea you’re not supposed to flush tampons! Shock

Most. Awesome. Thing. Ever.

^^this!

Can't believe how it made periods so much better.

Waffles80 · 02/02/2018 20:58

Totally, utterly agree. They’ve changed my life - periods are no longer horrendously painful. Honestly. No pain at all.

Has to use tampons a few months back as was away. Murderously uncomfortable.

I change my cup in the shower too, but fiddly sometimes to remove but I got the hang of it quickly.

Get the right size according to your age / if you’ve given birth.

TheWelshDragon · 02/02/2018 20:59

I have a green full sized one and a pink smaller one that is more comfortable as it's soft but doesn't hold much so I guess it depends how heavy your period is. I also use washable panty liners. Disposable ones make me sore and tampons hurt if changed at the wrong time.

HidingFromTheWorld · 02/02/2018 20:59

Best thing ever. Tampons made me sore and itchy, as did pads.

I’ve only ever used the Mooncup, but have heard good things about the alternatives.

Jut don’t order the cheapo versions from China which are apparently made from a dubious substance!

RainOnATinRoof · 02/02/2018 21:03

100% thrilled with cups.

Would never dream of going back to pads and tampons.

inkandstone · 02/02/2018 21:04

Oh really?! I had no idea you’re not supposed to flush tampons!

Please tell me you're joking.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 02/02/2018 21:05

I’d definitely try it, it didn’t go brilliantly on my first period, but I persevered, worked out where I was going wrong and now I wouldn’t use anything else.

I almost forget I’m having a period. It’s just so easy, clean it a few times a day and otherwise no mess and none of that awful drying feeling you get with tampons. I could never wear them continuously it felt like all the moisture was being sucked out of me. Whereas the mooncup I wear for 7 days and then wrap it away till next month. Fab.

Roseandmabelshouse · 02/02/2018 21:08

The best thing ever!! I forget I'm on my period. Only have to empty once/twice a
Day at home.

TheHeartOfTeFiti · 02/02/2018 21:11

They are great try this to see which one www.earthwisegirls.co.uk/choosingmenstrualcups-g-23.html

BigBaboonBum · 02/02/2018 21:13

The idea of them turned me right off, until one month I was without anything else and had bought this cup months ago... now I wouldn’t use anything else unless desperate. They’re amazing!

DrRisotto · 02/02/2018 21:13

I had a bumpy start with moon cup, it took maybe 4 months to figure out how to insert, remove and handle it generally BUT it was with the effort because I feel cleaner, it's more convenient, chapter, environmentally friendly and I just have to think about it less. It's worth its weight in gold. Try not to be put off by the initial learning curve.

Helllllooooooo · 02/02/2018 21:17

Great, if you have short nails

keepingbees · 02/02/2018 21:17

I got mooncup after seeing people raving about them on here.
I couldn't get on with it at all. Couldn't get it to 'unfold' properly no matter how I folded it. Painful with the stem but struggled removing it once I'd trimmed it. It leaked and despite positioning it as instructed it seemed to always go upwards out of reach. I've given up on it now after it travelled too far north and I couldn't get the darn thing out!
