To not open the whatsapp?

I'm a manager. I've just received a whatsapp from someone in my team who has been off sick all week. It's starts 'hi nunya, sorry for messaging outside work hours but I just...' and that's all I could see when it popped up. It's clearly work-related otherwise it would have started with more of a 'hi hun, chit chatty' vibe.

AIBU to leave it unread and open it in the morning?

No _ do that.

Mailawaymailawaymailaway · 01/02/2018 21:03

Why on earth wouldn't you read it?

You've chosen to give out your number, so read it and assess how important/relevant it is. Now, depending on the nature of the text, it might be reasonable to not reply until tomorrow - but you won't know until you read it!

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 01/02/2018 21:03

... wanted to let you know that I'm going to be off sick for the rest of the week" is what it most certainly says - I'd bet my money on it.

ny20005 · 01/02/2018 21:04

Surely they have to phone in during work hours to speak to you ?

jemjemjem50 · 01/02/2018 21:04

Open it

DextroDependant · 01/02/2018 21:04

Depending what phone you have if you press the little down arrow on the notification twice you can read the message without sending blue ticks.

pasturesgreen · 01/02/2018 21:04

It's past 9, read it in the morning.

BroccoliOnTheFloor · 01/02/2018 21:06

Go into whatsapp settings and turn of the Read Receipts. That way, the person will not know that you opened it (you will also not be able to see if others have read your messages). Then read it, but you can claim you haven't read it.

MrTrebus · 01/02/2018 21:07

Great manager,it could say "I'm in hospital" "someone has died" etc etc open It!

Stormwhale · 01/02/2018 21:07

Can you swipe down on the notification to see more of the message?

kaytee87 · 01/02/2018 21:08

I don't know why you wouldn't read it? If it says she's going to be sick tomorrow then just say 'sorry to hear that, please call the office in the morning as per policy'

lizzlebizzle33 · 01/02/2018 21:11

I don't think I can go to sleep tonight until you read it and tell us all what it says 😂

SillyMoomin · 01/02/2018 21:15

Much easier op- if you have an iPhone, turn on airplane mode and turn off Wifi- then you can go into WhatsApp and read the message- then close WhatsApp by closing the app and put back on your Wifi and turn off airplane mode- it won’t show as read

peachypetite · 01/02/2018 21:18

It could be an emergency, I would read it.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 01/02/2018 21:18

could you not just read it?

McTufty · 01/02/2018 21:19

I’d read it, you can always reply in the morning

McTufty · 01/02/2018 21:20

@sillymoomin - great tip!

Myddognearlyatethedeliveryman · 01/02/2018 21:20

"won big on the lottery and wanted to tell you your share is....."

GreyGardens88 · 01/02/2018 21:20

Stop being petty and just read it, why are you creating a big deal out of a message?

TwinklyGiraffe · 01/02/2018 21:21

Tell us what it says please!😬

WillowWept · 01/02/2018 21:23

What's the big deal?

If you read it and don't feel the need to respond then don't Confused

Wilburissomepig · 01/02/2018 21:23

Am I missing something? What difference does it make if you read it now or in the morning? The message will still be the same whenever you read it.

JeReviens · 01/02/2018 21:23

Why on earth would you play silly games over the reading of a Whatsapp message? I don't understand? Confused

dontsufferfools · 01/02/2018 21:24

As a manager I absolutely wouldn't open it. There's absolutely no reason anyone in my team would need to get in touch with me out of office hours and they all have my number.

Call me a shit manager all you like, I still wouldnt get involved at this time of night.

tinygirlsmum · 01/02/2018 21:24

Put phone on airplane mode to read it!
