To not open the whatsapp?

Nunyabusiness · 01/02/2018 21:00

I'm a manager. I've just received a whatsapp from someone in my team who has been off sick all week. It's starts 'hi nunya, sorry for messaging outside work hours but I just...' and that's all I could see when it popped up. It's clearly work-related otherwise it would have started with more of a 'hi hun, chit chatty' vibe.

AIBU to leave it unread and open it in the morning?

I am completely puzzled by this thread. How can anyone be leading a team but need to post that nonsense on this forum is beyond me.

iceallmighty · 01/02/2018 22:11

I'm one of three directors.
The other two have been on hols for two weeks and my staff have messaged me all hours the last week due to sickness or personal issues outside of working hours.
I never ignore them as it means I can be more organised for the next day if need to for cover/juggling work loads.

sirlee66 · 01/02/2018 22:16

OP what did the rest of it say!!!!!!!???

usernameunavailable · 01/02/2018 22:20
Confused
Wilburissomepig · 01/02/2018 22:22

I don't understand the issue with opening the message in the first place. Strange thread.

mumpoints · 01/02/2018 22:30

Because it shows the sender that the message has been read and the OP didn't want to have to work at 9 o clock at night.

beluga425 · 01/02/2018 22:44

Why should people be available to check and respond to messages at all hours?

llangennith · 01/02/2018 22:46

You’re a manager. Your pay reflects that you have more responsibility than your lesser paid underling. Stop shirking that responsibility and read and respond to the message.

RedWineAllMine · 01/02/2018 22:47

You can go into account settings and chat your settings so that you don't send read receipts. So others don't know you've read it secretly. And you can hide the time you was last seen active etc. That is if you want to open it but don't want them to know that you've seen it,

RedWineAllMine · 01/02/2018 22:49

And change your settings ** not chat your settings. Ffs, this auto change typo is really starting to annoy me now

SockUnicorn · 01/02/2018 23:25

i always turn my phone onto airplane mode so it goes offline. read things and then turn it back on. nobody knows youve been onto your whatsapp.

WonderLime · 01/02/2018 23:54

For ultimate passive aggressiveness, read it but don’t respond until tomorrow. Employee will know that you’ve read it and will be worried about your reaction all evening.

WonderLime · 01/02/2018 23:56

Ugh, no! Not how it works. Even managers are entitled to have downtime away from work ourside office hours.

Homemenu1 · 02/02/2018 00:10

Just read it, you don't have to respond

Itsbecauseimaleo · 02/02/2018 00:51

SockUnicorn I've just tried that and it didn't work?! Got my mum to send me a message and I read it in airplane mode but it still showed as read

lucylouuu · 02/02/2018 00:52

why don't you just turn off the " last active " setting and turn off the setting where people can see you've read the message and then read it

MulhuddartDrive · 02/02/2018 00:57

I know it's no longer relevant, but for everyone posting that OP should have read the message and replied in the morning, how many of you would whine about sending your manager a text, knowing they had read it but chosen not to answer? Seems to crop up annoyingly often round these parts.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 02/02/2018 01:10

Haven’t read whole thread but as a manager I would have definitely read the message, but not reply if it was something that could wait I til the morning.

MrsDilber · 02/02/2018 01:18

Intrigued as to what she did.

SockUnicorn · 02/02/2018 01:49

@Itsbecauseimaleo ohfuck!!!!! I tested this on DHs phone about a year ago and it worked so now always do it. And blatantly tell people I didn’t see their messages till hours later Blush. fuck

Carpetquest · 02/02/2018 02:03

Socku Grin
I took the thread to mean the staff member had not called in all week and decides to message now at nine o clock, hence the reason for the thread

Carpetquest · 02/02/2018 02:05

Although I’ve just realised how would she know she’s sick if she hadn’t called in? Must be wrong about that!

maybaby17 · 02/02/2018 02:17

If you swipe your notification down it might show you the full message if on iPhone and have drop down notifications

Or you could turn off read receipts but that also won't let you see who has read your messages. I'm nosey. I'd have to know

Gizlotsmum · 02/02/2018 06:24

See i’ve Just messaged a manager apologising for cancelling a meeting today. I will call when it’s a more reasonable hour but didn’t want him heading to site or to wake him and his family when I don’t know if he is awake this early

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 02/02/2018 06:37

I often don't read messages late at night/ on the weekend. It is about havimg boundaries. People know when I am available if I happen to respond outside of these hours then it is a bonus for them. In the same way I might email a dc's teacher outside of working hours because during their working hours I am also working. I wouldn't expect a reply until they are back in work mode.

Hope your employee is better soon.
