Bloody Mary?

Never tried one, can't imagine it's nice? Looks and sounds utterly revolting, cold tomato juice with herbs and celery?

AIBU?

clearly not if you don't like tomato juice.

If you do, it's bloody lovely. Especially if it's very spicy.

EggsonHeads · 25/01/2018 23:19

As opposed to warm tomato juice?

captaindiaper · 25/01/2018 23:19

I've never had tomato juice, but I do like tinned tomatoes? Is it similar?

TheQueenOfWands · 25/01/2018 23:20

I like it without the tomato, herbs and celery.

Celery is rank regardless of what you poke it in.

I'm allergic to tomato.

Do like herbs, though...

UterusUterusGhali · 25/01/2018 23:20

How can you tell unless you try?

Do you like tomato juice?

My DD loves a Virgin Mary but she loves veg juice. I'm sure she'll add vodka when she's older.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 25/01/2018 23:21

You are forgetting the vodka, OP!

Tomato juice with a dash of Worcester Sauce is really lovely.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 25/01/2018 23:22

Tomato Juice isn't like most other juices as it's very thick. I love it, esp with loads of L+P, but it's personal innit.

Surprised you're so keen to try it given your very negative OP.

captaindiaper · 25/01/2018 23:25

What's L+P?

Depends on how it is made.

I love them but others don't due to the spiciness. It can be a heavy drink as well if they use too much tomato juice.

Vitalogy · 25/01/2018 23:34

Could it be classed as the healthiest alcoholic drink I wonder.

Renardisafox · 25/01/2018 23:35

Try "Big Tom" spiced tomato mix. In a glass bottle in the mixer sectuon. Not as claggy as tomato juice and has a really lovely spicy kick. I get it from Sainsbury, but imagine it is available from most supermarkets.

Vitalogy · 25/01/2018 23:36

Wonder what carrot juice and vodka tastes like.

Arthur2shedsJackson · 25/01/2018 23:38

L & P is Lea and Perrins ie Worcestershire Sauce. An essential ingredient for a Bloody Mary along with a shake of Tabasco, some celery salt, black pepper, a slice of lemon, lots and lots of ice and a celery stalk. A smidge of sherry is no bad thing as well. I HATE tomato juice but a Bloody Mary is something v special.

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 25/01/2018 23:38

DH loves them. I can’t understand how serving someone cold soup with vodka counts as a cocktail, but it takes all sorts!

When we first moved to Canada I genuinely thought Clamato was a prank they were playing on me. Nobody, but NOBODY could drink that! It’s a savoury meal!!

KeepServingTheDrinks · 25/01/2018 23:39

Lee and Perins Worcestershire Sauce. I might have spelt it wrong.

If it's just tomato juice, I like it with L+P. I put so much in the tomato juice almost goes black, but I'd use it sparingly at first as it's quite strong, and make sure you stir before drinking.

If you like that, then try a Bloody Mary (don't bother if you don't, the addition of vodka won't help you!)

For a bloody mary, as well as the tomato juice, L+P and a shot of vodka, I'd also include a few shakes of tabasco and some sea salt and a twist of black pepper. Maybe some ice, unless the tomato juice is very cold. If you're posh you could also add a dash of dry sherry. I've also had it with horseradish, which I liked as well.

If your palate doesn't like spicy/hot things, you don't have to have much L+P or any tabasco.

It's a long drink (not a shot) so the main ingredient is the tomato juice.

Carouselfish · 26/01/2018 00:25

Best thing ever. Especially for holiday breakfast.
Go to New Orleans, they are all dirty there ie. with olive juice in them and Cajun beans (spicy, runner). And one place does them with crispy bacon and cheese.

babyboots · 26/01/2018 00:36

Best thing to drink with a big steak! In Canada we have 'Caesar's' which is essentially a Bloody Mary made with Clamato juice - tomato and clam!

Enjoyed widely and more popular than Bloody Mary's!

And I don't like tomato juice, but all the other flavours and spiciness cut through the tomato juice mmm

waterfall0119 · 26/01/2018 00:41

They’re rank

Kuriusoranj · 26/01/2018 00:42

Don't like Bloody Mary either but we were introduced to sangrita one holiday. There are dozens of different recipes for that, but the one we really like is essentially a Virgin Mary with virtually equal amount orange juice added. Sounds vomitous, is actually heavenly and the only way I can drink tequila now (alternating sips is the way to do it, apparently).

Eltonjohnssyrup · 26/01/2018 00:44

The best ones have a splash of sherry

Shmithecat · 26/01/2018 00:47

Drink of the gods. Plenty of L&P, Tabasco, celery salt, vodka and a shot of sherry. Ice and a celery stick too.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 26/01/2018 00:50

It's much better without the celery. Celery is the devil's food. Has to be Lea and Perrins in there somewhere.

Cellardoor23 · 26/01/2018 01:01

I agree with you op. Tomatoes in their regular form, delicious. Tinned tomatoes, ok. Liquidised tomato in a bottle, not so much.

Cellardoor23 · 26/01/2018 01:03

I know I'm probably being a bit wierd, I have many more strange food aversions. Don't even get me started on onions Grin

Rainbunny · 26/01/2018 01:05

I love Bloody Mary's! Especially with a good dollop of worcestershire sauce and tabasco along with the celery and herbs! You need good quality vodka though because tomato juice is not strong enough to mask the taste of cheap vodka and it should be mixed well also, nothing worse than tomato juice floating on top of pure vodka at the bottom.

I miss the celery/herb presentation as I'm in the USA where they serve it up with various pickles and olives balanced on top and on one occasion there was a piece of bacon involved as well! I'm really over hipster bars putting bacon in everything.
