To wonder why I get so ridiculously hungry?

Not sure if this is normal.

On an average working day I eat;

Bowl of porridge or 2x weetabix for breakfast (don't have time for anything more substantial)
Banana at 10 o'clock
Sandwich at 12, either egg or chicken or some pasta salad.
Then a small orange and a yoghurt or a packet of crisps.

By half 3 I'm so hungry I feel weak and I struggle to wait until 6 for my dinner.

Also if i don't eat my sandwich at 12 I can't concentrate on my work and get the shakes.

It's embarrassing because everyone has their lunch at 1.30 but I just can't wait.

I have tried having eggs for breakfast but it makes no difference and I don't have time anyway.

Worms

chickenowner · 22/01/2018 17:17

I'm the same. I feel hungry almost all the time - I could eat another meal an hour after lunch!

I've tried eating higher protein meals, which does help a little but I still spend many hours a day hungry. It's so annoying!

Apparently it's to do with hormones...

etap

I hope not! Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 22/01/2018 17:19

It's not normal for me but it's normal for you, just eat a bit more when you're hungry.

Monoblock67 · 22/01/2018 17:20

Looking at your diet i would suggest more protein to keep you fuller for longer. Maybe eggs in the morning instead of porridge? They can be zapped quickly in the microwave.

ThisLittleKitty · 22/01/2018 17:21

Doesn't seem normal to me if your eating that much today I've had a bowl of porridge and 3 Belvita biscuits and I'm ok.

Monoblock67 · 22/01/2018 17:21

Whoops sorry just read you’ve already tried eggs!! Ignore me Blush

Pinkwintersocks · 22/01/2018 17:22

I'm not sure what else I can have really, fruit doesn't fill me up, I've tried handfuls of nuts but they don't fill me up I'd need to eat the whole bag.

OP posts:
catlovingdoctor · 22/01/2018 17:23

High protein/fibre/fat foods will help fill you up. Snack on nuts- I find them really helpful for keeping me full outside of meal times.

Incorporate avocado into your meals because it's fat content is also filling.

Also, the weetabix and crisps are basically just carbs, so likely to cause an insulin rush then blood sugar crash; culminating in hunger.
Likewise, if you have a lot of sugary drinks, Including fruit juice, that could have a similar effect.

Do you eat a good, proper dinner with protein?

5foot5 · 22/01/2018 17:23

I used to get something similar to this in that by the time 5 came around I was feeling weak and shaky and would often end up eating a Twix or something to keep me going until I got home for my dinner.

This went on for ages but eventually I discovered that if I had something other than a sandwich for lunch - e.g. soup or even salad then I never got the shakes. For me it seems to be eating bread at lunch time causes some kind of energy crash a few hours later.

Now even on the days when I am doing the fasting part of the 5:2 and only having a 200 cal lunch, I still never get the shakes. But if I have forgotten to take lunch with me and go buy a sandwich instead I will almost inevitably have that weak and shaky feeling later.

peachypetite · 22/01/2018 17:23

Are you drinking plenty of water?

5foot5 · 22/01/2018 17:24

so likely to cause an insulin rush then blood sugar crash; culminating in hunger.

Is that what it is? Sounds like my issue.

Queentitansgo · 22/01/2018 17:24

I’m
The same. I have friends who never get hungry. Actually my DH often forgets to eat.
If I make a ham omelette for breakfast I’m still starving by 10. I’m continuously battling my hunger for the sake of my weight. And I drink loads of water as well.

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 22/01/2018 17:24

Im the same, I’m constantly eating and am a size 8-10 so not hugely overweight. I also have to eat at 12 or I get hangry and can’t concentrate on anything! I find sometimes drinking lots of water helps but everyone is different and if you have a fast metabolism then you will just need more food. It’s only a problem if you are overweight because of it.

chickenowner · 22/01/2018 17:25

That's interesting- I'm going to try that tomorrow. I have some homemade pumpkin and lentil soup in the freezer, I will get that out and have it for lunch and see if that helps.

Pinkwintersocks · 22/01/2018 17:26

Don't have sugary drinks just water.

At the weekend I might have 2 poached or scrambled eggs, doesn't fill me up. I love eggs and eat them most days but they don't fill me up, neither do nuts unfortunately.

A hot meal at lunch might be better than a sandwich but not always possible at work.

OP posts:
Pinkwintersocks · 22/01/2018 17:31

I do sip water throughout the day.

I'm not overweight but am nearer the top of my healthy weight. I'm not worried about my weight though, just fed up of feeling hungry.

I got home from work and ate cheese, pineapple and crackers and still hungry.

OP posts:
GeorgeTheHamster · 22/01/2018 17:34

I have the same issue. And I'm skinny not over weight.

For me it is protein. If I have a chicken breast, salmone piece or tin of tuna at lunchtime I do much better. Sandwiches just don't cut it.

Pinkwintersocks · 22/01/2018 17:35

I'll try having something else other than a sandwich. Still don't know how I can get through the morning less hungry!

OP posts:
eurochick · 22/01/2018 17:39

I'm the same. I'm fairly slim. It's just how I am. I don't get that hungry in the evening though, which is when I notice my OH hit the snacks, so it all evens up.

meredintofpandiculation · 22/01/2018 17:42

I find I need to front load my eating - close together meals in the early part of the day, but nothing within 3 hours of bed. In your situation, I'd add a generous helping of fruit (dried or fresh) and some nuts to the porridge (weetabix just don't pack enough punch for breakfast), and I'd add something to the banana (which might allow me to stave off lunch to 12.30), then a snack if I needed it in the afternoon. And not eat quite so much in the evening if I found my weight was ballooning.

afrikat · 22/01/2018 17:44

I was the same until recently when I cut out bread and processed carbs and I don't have hunger crashes anywhere near as much.
I have porridge with berries for breakfast, carrot sticks with a bit of houmous for morning snack, big salad with lots of protein and fat for lunch (fish / feta / avocado / pine nuts), a handful of nuts for afternoon snack and soup or a big bowl of roasted veg with protein and fat for dinner. I might have a bit of Greek yoghurt in the evening.

Queentitansgo · 22/01/2018 17:49

I
Must say I tried low carb high fat last year. I did feel less hungry but I gained weight annoyingly. But what I was hoping or expecting but I did.

Hairyhat · 22/01/2018 18:10

Worms. You might have them with no symptoms (other than constant hunger)

t00manytears · 22/01/2018 18:12

How low were your carbs Queentitansgo I've found that unless I go really low with LCHF it doesn't work for weight loss.

I'm talking 20g of carbs or less per day, you can eat quite a lot of fat at that level but if the carbs increase the fat should come down.

Anyway to answer the OP, I find that carbs make/keep me hungry - have you tried a high protein breakfast of something egg based, or even avocado on high protein bread or something?
