About Cristiano Ronaldo being mocked?

kokosnuss · 22/01/2018 11:01

Cristiano Ronaldo is being widely mocked for borrowing a doctor's phone to look at himself after being kicked in the head.

I know the man is vain, but I'm sorry, if I'd been kicked in the head and was profusely bleeding, I'd want to have a look at what the damage was too! And if there wasn't a mirror I'd probably use a phone.

Is it not just human curiosity when you get injured to want to know how bad it is?

It plays into the general narrative, often perpetuated by Ronaldo himself whether inadvertently or otherwise, that image is everything to him.

Yes he was being practical, yes he wasn't being unreasonable or "soft" to take a look at his own blood etc, but it will invariably be mocked because of his past preening and his profile.

He won't hurt too long, he'll just love the coverage of his "warrior" exploits and the fact he scored again.

Nothing to see here etc

Pidlan · 22/01/2018 11:08

Ronaldo is an exquisite footballer and so will be mocked always by rival fans. He did nothing wrong, of course.

OnionKnight · 22/01/2018 11:17

He did nothing wrong, he had a head injury and was bleeding heavily so he wanted to see the damage.

Yes.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/01/2018 11:22

Thing is Ronaldo is a bit of a preening git, but he is just so genuinely brilliant at what he does that the press have to resort to ludicrous stuff to do their usual trick and try and bring him down a peg or two.

Leeds2 · 22/01/2018 11:34

If it had been me, yes I would want to have seen the damage. I would however have waited ten seconds until I had access to a decent mirror in the dressing room.

MrsHathaway · 22/01/2018 11:53

Of course he wanted to see it.

Also, he makes a shedload of advertising (etc) money from being pretty. Scars/bruising etc would affect his earnings. Even more motivation to see what's going on than an average person.

AHungryMum · 22/01/2018 11:55

On this occasion his actions were perfectly reasonable. Of course, his form for being incredibly vain and a bit up himself means that he is more susceptible to being mocked for things like this even if he was in fact being completely reasonable this time (which imo, it was).

FWIW I don't think fans need to latch on to this kind of thing as an excuse to mock him. That photo of him silently seething behind a fake smile next to that terrifyingly awful/hilarious sculpture of him in Madeira airport has surely given us all enough material to mock the poor guy for the rest of his life without needing anything else....

Jeanvaljean27 · 22/01/2018 11:59

He'd just been kicked in the head with a football boot. If you look at the pictures, his head/face was an unholy bloody mess and he had to be brought off for treatment.

Yes, he's vain but I think it's reasonable to review how big the gash on your head is if your face is caked in blood and you need to decide whether you can physically carry on playing.

ptumbi · 22/01/2018 12:05

God forbid he ever plays Rugby!

How long would a Rugby game take if the players stopped to examine ever bump bruise and scrape?

(Difference between Rugby and Football players - football players try to convince the ref they are badly hurt. Rugby players try to convince the ref that they are NOT hurt )

KERALA1 · 22/01/2018 12:05

His family set up is deeply odd imo. Is he the one with lots of motherless babies and a girlfriend with a baby and another baby that came out of nowhere?

FlouncyDoves · 22/01/2018 12:08

Yes. I imagine he’s weeping into his many millions of euros.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/01/2018 12:11

Think you have to go straight off for bleeding in rugby don't you?

And actually, if rugby was more lucrative than football I imagine Ronaldo would play it and excel at it. He is an amazing athlete.

JuliannaBixby · 22/01/2018 12:11

I use the camera on my phone to check my teeth after eating! (I don't take a picture Grin just have a quick peek).

Scabbersley · 22/01/2018 12:13

Rugby isn't a very intelligent game. Ronaldo is an extremely intelligent football player. I would imagine rugby would bore him it does me

ptumbi · 22/01/2018 12:13

You have to go off as a 'blood injury' in Rugby, but if only if you are bleeding profusely (probably due to risk of infection/infecting others)

But footballers fall over and scream in agony when the ball has come nowhere near them.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/01/2018 12:18

Meh, I hate the whole "rugby players are real men, footballers are big nancies" narrative. It's so ridiculous and unfounded in fact.

RoseWhiteTips · 22/01/2018 12:21

Amazing to think this was once Ronaldo...

Theglobe · 22/01/2018 12:23

Comparing rugby and football is apples and pears. Both totally different. One would hazard those trying to compare the two might not be very intelligent.

RoseWhiteTips · 22/01/2018 12:23

He does quite a bit for charity - more than most. I like him.

JacquesHammer · 22/01/2018 12:25

Rugby isn't a very intelligent game

Seriously.....do you play?

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Ronaldo. He does a shed load for charity and some of the stories people were telling me about him when we were on holiday were lovely

Queeniebed · 22/01/2018 12:26

Personally I have no problem with what he did and I would have done the same. People seem to have taken it in context with him being pretty (so I read in the paper so no idea if that's true). I get the impression there is a lot of football rivalry behind it so pretty much ignored the issue

EilaLila · 22/01/2018 12:37

YANBU. Most people would want to see the extent of their injury, it’s human curiosity.

ptumbi · 22/01/2018 12:42

Rugby isn't a very intelligent game - really? I reckon you've never looked at a Rugby rulebook. Hmm

Rugby players are real men Grin. Footballers are nancies.

fourquenelles · 22/01/2018 12:43

He has no tattoos because he is a regular blood donor. I don't care how vain he is I love him just a little bit for that fact.
