My 9 YEAR OLD HAS HIS FIRST EVER PLAY DATE!

AIBU to shout this from the roof tops?!

My 9 year old has been invited to go on his FIRST ever play date today and I am so pleased for him!!

My DS has autism and a whole range of other health issues and doesn't really have any " friends" and because of this he has never ever had a play date .. until today!

He has been invited to go around someone's house today for a play and tea ... he went off today with his supplies ( very very fussy so packed him off with his usual custard and salt and vinegar crisps!) and he is so excited and proud of himself 🙈

I am over the moon for him and so happy he finally has a friend and is going on a play date!

Hopefully this is just the start of some amazing things to come ... StarStarStarStar!!!!!!

Please try and keep in mind next time you have a birthday party / arranging a play date think of the quiet children in your DS/DD class ... my son is 9 and is non verbal and has only just been invited on his first ever play date and has still NEVER been invited to a birthday party ... ( even though we always invite children around here Smile)

So proud of my little man!

I'm looking forward to hearing all about it later.

Pickleypickles · 17/01/2018 15:32

Growingboys · 17/01/2018 15:32

This is great news! Good for him, and I hope he has a fantastic time x

doze931 · 17/01/2018 15:33

Hope he has a lovely time. My DS is 5 language impairment and got invited to a party from a girl in his mainstream class (goes one day). He had to be shown who the birthday girl actually was but i was so pleased. Hopefully this is the start of a lovely friendship for your son

Thegirlwithnousername · 17/01/2018 15:33

My little ones too little for school just yet but will always think of this when my little one goes to school!

This is awesome !!! My DS is 10 and has only been invited on 1 playdate !
He's HF but socially awful!!!

myrtleWilson · 17/01/2018 15:36

oh OP - your ds is having a great few months isn't he - long may it continue!

cautiousoptimist1 · 17/01/2018 15:38

Oh that's so lovely.

I don't want to derail your thread but what would your advice be about birthday parties? I'm a long way off this but see on here a lot about children with autism being left out. Would you just like him treated the same as the others or would you like parents to acknowledge it may be too much for him but they'd like him to be there/maybe make extra provision for him (quiet space, going to the party earlier or later etc). Genuine interest by the way, not meant to offend or be goady.

StealthNinjaMum · 17/01/2018 15:38

That's really lovely. i'm placemarking because I'm hoping you're going to give as an update about how successful it was.

Oogle · 17/01/2018 15:40

This has made me smile and tearful all in one. I'm smiling because I can tell how excited this is and how much it means to you both. I hope he has a wonderful time. I'm tearful over hearing that he hasn't yet been invited to a birthday party and I really hope he gets that invite very soon.

My DS isn't at school yet but I promise to always think of the quieter children when it comes to playdates and parties.

LaLaLolly · 17/01/2018 15:47

This is such a lovely post! Good luck to MiniBlueParadise, hope he has a blast!

My lovely 5 year old DD is also non-verbal and has ASD and I totally relate.

@BLUESEAPARADISE YANBU at all! Fantastic. Can’t wait to read how it went Smile

Pancakeflipper · 17/01/2018 15:55

Aww - hope it goes ok and he has lots of fun. Are you more excited than him?

My 9yr old is HF, dairy allergy and a few other health issues.

He hardly receives invites but we are really lucky as 1 of his friends has a mother who sees the positive things about him, includes him to parties /play dates and the other month - went on a sleepover. I have to stop myself smothering her in hugs.

grannytomine · 17/01/2018 15:56

Oh that is great, you are not at all unreasonable to be pleased. I remember asking a child round for a play date and her mother asked if I realised she was epileptic. I said I did and if she didn't trust me to deal with it I would understand. She said her DD had never had a play date and she was just to excited about it. We had a great time and it was the first of many playdates, hope it goes well for your son.

SilverySurfer · 17/01/2018 15:56

Bless him - I hope he has a fabulous time Smile

Booagain · 17/01/2018 15:57

Yay!!! Hope he has a wonderful time :) best thing I’ve read today xx

Katedotness1963 · 17/01/2018 15:59

Hope they have a wonderful time!

Notsureaboutmuchanymore · 17/01/2018 16:00

Awesome! We have 3 with ASD and one on the pathway - and with the eldest play dates and parties were non existent Sad

The middle two attend an sen unit and the entire unit goes to each others parties and it’s wonderful! I hadn’t realised how emotional it would be and cried at the first one Blush

If you’re anywhere near Surrey we are having the next one in May Grin

MissionItsPossible · 17/01/2018 16:00

Brilliant OP. Smile Update how it went afterwards please.

Greensleeves · 17/01/2018 16:02

YAY!!! I know what a massive moment this is, I have a ds1 with autism and his first playdate was such a big milestone.

Tickled pink for you Flowers let us know how it goes!
