FFS so far this program has named several of the new stupid cross pedigree dogs with daft names as top dogs, am i being unreasonable to think, A they are encouraging pratts to breed these crosses, and B encouraging people to look at these so called breeds, and thus turning the circle round again,

What's wrong with cross breeds?

bridgetreilly · 16/01/2018 19:59

Nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned mongrel. Kennel Club breeding doesn't exactly produce healthy dogs - look at the Alsatians for a start.

MabelBee · 16/01/2018 20:02

I agree bridge. I love a mongrel.

FatBottomedGal · 16/01/2018 20:02

Urgh I hope they’re not going to be promoting the dogs bred with health problems Sad

I’ll be over the moon if staffies come out near the top!

thirstyformore · 16/01/2018 20:03

Yabu for watching such crap.

isseywithcats · 16/01/2018 20:03

nothing wrong with crossbreeds its the way that they are called stupid names nowadays like chipoo, and cockerpoo, they are not a seperate breed they are a crossbreed, and people charge hundreds of pounds for puppies that are not pedigrees but at pedigree prices, which encourages overbreeding when rescue are full of crossbred dogs with little chance of being rehomed, and encourages puppy farms who really do not care about their dogs or selling poorly bred, ill puppies to a gullible public

StylishMummy · 16/01/2018 20:03

I think it's an honest reflection of dog ownership in the UK, so what if there's cross breeds? The 'breeding' encouraged by the KC is dangerous and cruel and overemphasises damaging features

isseywithcats · 16/01/2018 20:04

and by the way i prefer mongrels in all of 61 years have only ever had one pedigree and he was a cairn terrier who are not overbred because they are not so popular

OP posts:
isseywithcats · 16/01/2018 20:05

read my post its the names that these crosses are called not the dogs themselves

StylishMummy · 16/01/2018 20:08

What's wrong with a cockerpoo? Or a cavachon? Just gives an indication to the parentage of the pup

Youngmystery · 16/01/2018 20:08

I agree with you. I think it's hilarious people spend hundreds of pounds on a dog that is a mutt, but because it comes with a fancy name, it's worth more. Nah it's not.

Mutts are great, better than pedigrees. Any pedigree I've met has been so stupid, like didn't know their own name stupid. But I won't pay 500 for one. Not when I can get one from the sspca for much cheaper.

Wolfiefan · 16/01/2018 20:11

They aren't breeds. They are not necessarily healthier than pedigrees and are bred for money. No concern about health and welfare. Puppy farmers churn out litter after litter and people buy them because they're "cute". They don't consider what the health issues could be or if they can handle the worst of both breeds put together.

KurriKurri · 16/01/2018 20:12

I have a poodle x jack russell , he's mostly poodle(dad is a toy poodle mum is apoddle JR X). When people ask I say he is a poodleX. Because that is what he is, sometimes people try to tell me he is a jackapoo or a jackadoodle. But he isn't he's a little cross breed and a brilliant little chap, he doesn't need a fancy made up name, he is who he is.

KurriKurri · 16/01/2018 20:14

Oh and he didn't come from a puppy farm, he came from a family, I saw both parents and saw his mother feeding him. And I paid what I would expect to pay for a mongrel, not one of these crazy inflated prices.

Booboostwo · 16/01/2018 20:23

There is nothing wrong with cross breed unless they are bred indiscriminately for huge sums of money.

There is nothing right about recognized breeds unless they are bred with the physical and mental wellbeing of the dogs as the first priority.

officerhinrika · 16/01/2018 21:18

I didn’t like the sound of some of the pug crosses and as for the German Shepherd crossed with a Border Collie! Two dogs with a high drive to work / do stuff, high energy from the collie and potentially leg and hip problems from the GS, sounds like a terrible combination. With any cross you have to consider what happens if the puppy inherits the worst of it parents traits rather than the best. I can’t believe some of these crosses have been thought through.
I’m a Lurcher owner so living with an interesting cross every day!

HostaFireAndIce · 16/01/2018 21:49

I agree it's a bit daft to have Britain's top 100 dog breeds when several of them aren't actually breeds at all. You can't have various top spots taken with 'mongrel'!

HostaFireAndIce · 16/01/2018 21:56

And... Just had a look through a list of them and 'mixed breed' is listed as one of the top 10!! My quick count revealed 22 'breeds' that were in fact 'mixed breeds' in the first place. Pah! What nonsense Wink

ParanoidGynodroid · 16/01/2018 21:57

Well the price of a dog is the same as the price of anything else: it is worth what people are willing to pay for it.
My dog is KC registered pedigree specimen. This is of no use to me whatsoever; he's just lovely pet. If I paid plenty for a lovely pet with a pedigree, then maybe I would for one without, too.

juddyrockingcloggs · 16/01/2018 22:00

I'm not sure who voted for the beautiful miniature schnauzer as only number 29 but I can assure them that mine is the best dog, in the world. Ever. Ever i tell you!

InsomniacAnonymous · 16/01/2018 22:06

juddyrockingcloggs is there any chance of a photo please? Not because I doubt for a second that yours is the best dog in the world ever, because I don't. It's just that I love miniature schnauzers and adore dogs although I've never had one of my own.

juddyrockingcloggs · 17/01/2018 07:36

officerhinrika I have a BC GSD cross from a shelter. He is a neurotic walking health disaster!
My pedigree GSD is much healthier than the cross.
