FFS so far this program has named several of the new stupid cross pedigree dogs with daft names as top dogs, am i being unreasonable to think, A they are encouraging pratts to breed these crosses, and B encouraging people to look at these so called breeds, and thus turning the circle round again,

OP posts:

I’d quite like a Jack Russell and Shih Tzu cross. Just so I could call it a Jack Shit.

ElChan03 · 17/01/2018 07:53

I have a Jack Russell x chihuahua. Not bred for a fancy name but a happy accident in a family home. I paid good money for him because the family gave their puppies the best possible care to start. So I was happy to do so. He is a wonderful puppy with a gorgeous temperament. I agree about the silly names but cross breeds are just as wonderful dogs as pedigree. I had a pedigree Springer before and he was riddled with health issues. Loved him to pieces but he cost the family thousands over 14 years.

it was crazy but i guess it was open to public vote.
very glad the mongrel came 2nd and jack Russell third, and not surprised the lab came first.

picklemepopcorn · 17/01/2018 07:58

There is a purpose for wanting to know the exact cross you have, and a name makes it quicker to refer to. You'll have a better idea of temperament and size than a random mongrel.

A cocker poo is very different from a chipoo, for example!

MissEliza · 17/01/2018 08:00

You have a point Op. We're looking for a puppy right now and I'm astonished at the prices people charge for the fashionable breeds. Plus they seem to dominate the listings. We did think about cockapoos for various reasons but there almost seems too many for sale IYSWIM and it's hard to be sure they're not from puppy farms.

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/01/2018 08:35

Nowhere near enough emphasis on the health issues with some of these pedigree breeds eg Breathing/Caesarian births/skin folds causing disease etc. It would have been an ideal chance to deter people from choosing them, wasted. Even the poor disabled dashund was romanticised with no focus on how uncomfortable his daily life must be and how difficult it must be to deal with eg going to the toilet. Fatuous programme.

MissEliza · 17/01/2018 09:19

My dcs are dying to get a dog because 'everyone' else is and tbh, I'm shocked at how little thought people I know have put into buying their dogs. Almost everyone recently has gone for a 'trendy' option. There's no consideration of pros and cons. My dcs think I'm being difficult but my dad's side of the family are real dog lovers and I was brought up to take dog ownership seriously. There was no discussion on the programme of pros and cons of various breeds or the risks involved in mixing different breeds. It was a silly programme.

InsomniacAnonymous · 17/01/2018 10:32

juddyrockingcloggs Thank you so much! Smile Your dog is seriously adorable. I love the little 'foldy-over' ears that miniature schnauzers have.

Slartybartfast · 17/01/2018 11:54

No the downfalls of some breeds were mentioned, it was it, aka lighthearted

joystir59 · 17/01/2018 12:17

We've got a JRT and they came 3rd. Goodness knows why, as ours is a snappy nippy noisy little shit. Of course he's also gorgeous cute and we love him totally

Beerwench · 17/01/2018 12:38

Cross breeding for a practical purpose has always happened, and it's how 'new' breeds are founded. It does take a while to establish the 'good' dogs with the desired traits from both breeds. A sprocker spaniel has been around for years, bred for hunting and the 2 types of breed crossed to produce a dog that had the desirable traits from both types. But they're both spaniels I guess, just different types with different strengths.
It happens with horses all the time, a prime example is the Irish Sport Horse, a heavy and strong Irish draught crossed with a lighter and more energetic thoroughbred to result in a middle of the road horse capable of many disciplines. What pisses me off about these designer breeds is that they're being bred willy nilly for fashion rather than practical reasons. I can see why a 'labradoodle' could be a desired breed, strong, very trainable, calm and don't shed (or hypoallergenic?) And possibly make a great working dog, but some of the others are just fashion and because someone thinks they'll look cute without actually matching the breeds properly. That's wrong IMO, as well as the extortionate money charged. But really the only losers are the dogs aren't they?
And technically as the show was top 100 dogs and not breeds, then cross breeds were to be expected.
though I was heard to shout "That's not a bloody breed!" At the TV once or twice

picklemepopcorn · 17/01/2018 12:40

I've got that noisy neurotic thing going on with my Frenchie/Jrt(?) boy. He's got all the feisty opinionated attitude of a JRT. He's a darling though, and very pretty. I'm not posting a pic because he's very distinctive. People stop me to ask about him, though.

PecanPieFace · 17/01/2018 12:42

Totally off topic but I have never understood why Jack Russells are so popular - every one I've ever met has been a yappy bitey little shit.

picklemepopcorn · 17/01/2018 12:42

I think I've met a sprocker- wildly energetic and bouncy. It needed an adopter with a lot of space and energy, maybe a farm type home. We were after something more sedate, sadly.

PecanPieFace · 17/01/2018 12:43

Mutts are great, better than pedigrees. Any pedigree I've met has been so stupid, like didn't know their own name stupid

I think you've just described dogs in general there Grin

Disclaimer: despite this and my last post, I do actually like dogs!

Seniorcitizen1 · 17/01/2018 12:44

My son and his wife have a cockapoo puppy - he is adorable

picklemepopcorn · 17/01/2018 12:44

I'd have agreed with you at one time. However there is a fantastic placid dog near me that I didn't even realise was a JRT she was so sweet. And my nieces both have Jrt pups that are proving adorable. One is so placid she could be a therapy dog- and maybe will be one day. The other is as smart as can be, and very sweet with it.

ThymeLord · 17/01/2018 12:45

I agree with you OP, and I agree with Wolfie. People are going out of their way to miss your point though.

derangedmermaid · 17/01/2018 13:00

I refuse to watch it because I know it's going to make me so unbelievably cross.

And yeah, people are missing your point deliberately.

Internet people get awfully weird over dogs

Slartybartfast · 17/01/2018 18:28

wolfie didnt start the thread Hmm

Busybeesbutt · 17/01/2018 20:05

Can't believe chow chow are only number 66! Most beautiful dog ever

MinorRSole · 17/01/2018 20:22

I saw a cross breed the other day that was pug x Jack russel. Interested me as was the beautiful look of a pug with the nose of a jack russel. I thought that was a good cross and an example of where it can be useful. That being said I think it was an accidental benefit rather than by design.
Crossing a breed like a pug or bulldog would have health benefits for the breed but that isn't why it's being done sadly

Youngmystery · 17/01/2018 20:26

I think you've just described dogs in general there grin

Nah definitely not, met plenty of Mutts that were smart. But one pure labrador was just so dim, I often wondered how she managed to remember to breathe. And her owners wanted to breed her, the last thing you need to do is increase the amount of dogs with that level of stupidity.

goose1964 · 17/01/2018 20:43

My gran used to have a German shepherd border collie cross. She was a beautiful dog but needed long walks at least twice a day and if she spotted a cat, squirrel or anything else would chase it like a mad thing, either hauling whoever was holding the lead behind or if she was off the lead would chase them into the canal , and she hates being bathed to get all the gunk off her fur.

She was lovely looking, very intelligent but would not have made a good family dog
